The right to fish could be the one that got away

If you are a avid fisherman who enjoys deep see fishing, your hobby and/or passion is about to cost you a little more. A federal proposal requiring a license for recreational anglers who fish several miles off the coast of the United States is being proposed.

The United States National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Service has proposed that beginning in January, recreational anglers who fish in federal waters --beyond three miles off the coast of New Jersey and other East Coast states -- will have to register with the agency.

Vietnam War Veterans Against John McCain

A friend of mine had me check out the website for the Vietnam Veterans against John McCain. It is "chock full" of anti - John McCain information, much of it very informative and eye opening, such as the following fact sheet put together of his military record.

FACT SHEET: Military record of John Sidney McCain III
Both McCain III’s father and grandfather were Admirals in the United States Navy.        His father Admiral John S. ”Junior” McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe - later commander of American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war.     His grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. McCain III, like his father and grandfather, also attended the United States Naval Academy. McCain III finished near the bottom of his graduating class in 1958. McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft
1 - Student pilot McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings.
2 - Pilot McCain III lost another plane two years later while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. ”Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral.
3 - Pilot McCain III lost number three in 1965 when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. McCain III radioed, ”I’ve got a flameout” and ejected at one thousand feet. The plane crashed to the ground and McCain III floated to a deserted beach.
4 - Combat pilot McCain III lost his fourth on July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk combat pilot. While waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain Jr’s. plane. He escaped from the burning  aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship.
5 - Combat pilot McCain III lost a fifth plane three months later (Oct. 26, 1967) during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam when he failed to avoid a surface-to-air missile.    McCain III ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi. After being pulled from the lake by the North Vietnamese, McCain III was bayoneted in his left foot and shoulder and struck by a rifle butt. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton.

1973 New York Daily News labeled POW McCain III a “PW Songbird”
On McCain III’s fourth day of being denied medical treatment, slapped, and threatened with death by the communist (they were demanding military information in exchange for medical treatment), McCain III broke and told his interrogator, ”O.K., I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital.” U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain. It was then that the communist learned that McCain III’s father was Admiral John S. McCain, the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. Forces in the Pacific. The Vietnamese rushed McCain III to Gai Lam military hospital (U.S. government documents), a medical facility normally
unavailable for U.S. POWs. By Nov. 9, 1967 (U.S. government documents) Hanoi press was quoting McCain III describing his mission including the number of aircraft in his flight, information about rescue ships, and the order of which U.S. attacks would take place. While in still in North Vietnam’s military hospital, McCain III gave an interview to prominent French television reporter Francois Chalais for a series titled Life in Hanoi. Chalais’ interview with McCain III was aired in Europe. Vietnamese doctors operated on McCain’s Leg in early December, 1967. Six weeks after he was shot down, McCain was taken from the hospital and delivered to a U.S. POW camp, In May of 1968, McCain III allowed himself to be interviewed by two North Vietnamese
generals at separate times.” May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain  In August 1968, other POWs learned for the first time that John McCain III had been taken prisoner.
On June 5, 1969, the New York Daily News reported in a article headlined
Reds Say PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral, “ . . . Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of United States Commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner . . .” The Washington Post explained McCain III’s broadcast: “The English-Language broadcast beamed at South Vietnam was one of a series using American prisoners. It was in response to a plea by Defense Secretary Melvin S. Laird, May 19, that North Vietnam treat prisoners according to the humanitarian standards set forth by the Geneva Convention.”
In 1970, McCain III agreed to an interview with Dr. Fernando Barral, a Spanish psychiatrist who was living in Cuba at the time. The meeting between Barral and McCain III (which was photographed by the Vietnamese) took place away from the prison at the office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in Hanoi (declassified government document). During the meeting, POW McCain sipped coffee and ate oranges and cakes with the Cuban.
While talking with Barral, McCain III further seriously violated the military Code of Conduct by failing to evade answering questions ”to the utmost of his ability” when he, according government documents, helped Barral by answering questions in Spanish, a language McCain had learned in school. The interview was published in the in January 1970.

McCain III was released from North Vietnam March 15, 1973
In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to make public any records they hold pertaining to returned U.S. POWs. McCain III claims, that while a POW, he tried to kill himself.

McCain III was awarded “medals for valor” equal to nearly a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain III, the son of famous admirals, a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals. “McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat,” explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. “Since McCain got 28 medals,” Bell continued, “that equals to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where I’m sure a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down.” For years, McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased newsmedia. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and his collaborations with the enemy to become America’s POW-hero presidential candidate.

This is turning out to be an uphill fight for Anhueser-Busch, a fight that they may not be able to win.

Anheuser-Busch is expected to announce an extensive reorganization aimed at building profits that will include cutting more than $500 million in costs.
The savings will come from reducing marketing expenses and possibly shedding assets like its Busch Gardens theme park business and its packaging unit.

Bayshore Young Dems React to Middletown's Plight

Last week the New Jersey legislature passed bill A500 which eliminated the use of Regional Contribution Agreements (RCA's).
RCA's were agreements that more affluent municipalities entered into with less well off towns, in order to transfer some of the more affluent town's affordable housing obligations.
Towns like Middletown would enter into agreements to pay other municipalities like Red Bank or Lakewood $20,000 -$35,000 per housing unit, in order to skirt there responsibilities under COAH to fund affordable housing in such towns as Middletown.
At first glance RCA's seemed like a good idea until towns like Middletown started to abuse the system. Middletown would enter into agreements with other towns and never transfer funds, causing towns like Red Bank to cancel their agreements with Middletown.

Since 1985, Middletown has needed to built approx. 39 units a year of affordable housing to stay in compliance with COAH, but they have chosen not to.
Mayor Scharfenberger and the rest of the Middletown GOP used every trick within their means not to build affordable housing in Middletown and now it has come back to bite them in the ass.

Matt Morehead, Chairman of the Bayshore Young Dems, has been a leading voice on this issue for the past year and has posted on his A Voice for the Youth blog a series of posts that explain, better than I can, Middletowns plight and some of the history behind this issue.

Please take a look at it. This information is very important and needs to be understood to be placed within it's proper perspective.

John McCain - "Lost in Space"

This YouTube video was sent to me by a friend and I thought that I should pass it along.
When you look at this video, you will NOT BELIEVE your eyes and ears.
This is a view of John McCain that you probably won't see on the Network news. If it wasn't serious, it would be hilarious.

Economists should listen to consumers

"Experts have a half-glass full outlook for the economy while average Americans are far more pessimistic. Here's why the consumer is probably right."

CNNMoney.com posted a story the other day that does not bode well for the economic outlook. Consumers surveyed earlier this month by The Conference Board, a well-respected private business research group, gave the bleakest six-month outlook for the economy ever in the nearly 42 year history of the survey. By a 3 to 1 margin consumers expect the economy to deteriorate over the next six months.

It's Not Even Close: Obama Should Pick Clinton for VP

RealClearPolitics's Bob Beckel wrote an opinion piece that was posted on Yahoo, that lays out his reasoning as to why Hillary Clinton should be Barrack Obama's choice as a running mate this fall.
It is a well reasoned article and I happen to agree with it.
I feel that the Democrats should field the strongest possible team, by including Clinton on the ticket it would accomplish just that.

Slick John McCain and the offshore oil ruse

"State budget cuts aid to all but three towns", can Middletown now pass it's budget?

It is being reported on NJ.com today that all but three of New Jersey's 566 cities and towns will see their state aid shrink under the state's new $32.9 billion budget and not one of the three lucky towns is Middletown.

This is unfortunate for the residents of Middletown because it will contribute to the tax increase in this years budget. This news however was not unexpected, it finally means that the Republican majority that control the Township Committee can finalize and adopt the operating budget that is now 6 months over due.

The Republican majority kept holding out hope for state aid that they had been told would never come, now whatever budget savings were in place are almost certainly gone due to all of the temporary budget appropriations that where needed to keep the town running.

Gas prices fuel some skipped first aid calls

The Asbury Park Press is reporting that the high cost of gas is causing some members of the Holmdel First Aid Squad to miss calls for help. It seems that a number of the First Aider's are on fixed incomes and can not afford to respond to calls.
Officials in town are stating however, that all emergency calls are being responded to and that no one is currently in danger.

This seems like a real problem, how long before the public becomes effected? And is this an isolated situation or are other towns in the Bayshore experiencing the same problems? I would like to know because something needs to be done about it before some one dies.

Is it possible for towns to reimburse some of the fuel costs to their emergency responders, maybe $20-$25 dollars a month or maybe on a per mileage, per call basis ? I don't know, but this issue needs to be looked at if towns are going to rely on volunteers to provide emergency services.

Why Oil Prices Skyrocketed

With the cost of crude oil surging to record highs, a heated battle of blame is in full swing, with a lineup of suspects that includes the oil industry, Congress, commodity speculators, environmentalists and developing countries in Asia....

So opens the article that I was reading on Livescience.com.
The article is a quick rundown on the reasons why the cost of oil has risen so much over the past year.

BIG OIL COMPANIES GIVE MONTANA THE BRUSHOFF

The NY Post's John Crudele wrote a follow-up to his column MONTANA GOVERNOR IS SITTING ON AN OIL MINE in Thursday's edition of the paper.

It seems as though the big oil companies do not want to deal with Montana's Governor Brian Schweitzer for some odd reason. Wouldn't it be better to exlpore for oil in the U.S, particlularily in a state that is willing to have you drill for it and would be willing to have a refinery built there to refine whatever oil may be found!

Obama Targets "Enron Loophole"

Barrack Obama  yesterday unveiled a part of his energy plan it was reported by the Washington Post.
Obama is calling for the closure of the so-called "Enron Loophole"  that protects some energy futures trading from oversight by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

I hope that he can get the loophole closed, then we may see a slowing down in the rising price of oil. It is believed by many that the price we are paying at the pump is due to speculation in the commodity markets.

Jim Grenafege Comments to Middletown Committee Reguarding the Budget and Layoffs

This is the first of four audio clips from the Middletown Township Committee Meeting in which it is alledged that Jim Grenafege, the Democratic Candidate for Township Committee, suggested that the Township Committee should consider laying off members of the Police department.
After listening to all of the audio you can make a determination for yourself whether or not Mr. Grenafege suggested it or not.

1st. part. - Jim's comments

2nd. part - Jim's comments

3rd. part - Scharfenberger explains budget

4th. part - Chief's comments

After listening to all four audio clips it is my contention that Mr. Grenafege did not call for a reductions in the Middletown Police department.

Township Committee Opposed to Bamm Hollow Country Club Efforts to Force Community To Rezone Property

Just posted on the Middletown Township website is a letter to the public explaining how Bamm Hollow Country Club  is attempting to strong-arm  the township into an approval to rezone their grounds so that a residential housing development can be built on the site.

Bamm Hollow is questioning the township's use of RCA's to transfer some of it's affordable housing obligations to Lakewood.

Middletown entered into an agreement with Lakewood to transfer 98 housing units at a cost of $20,000 each.  These are units that Lakewood desperately needs and wants, however the problem is that since this agreement the cost per units have increased to $35,000 per unit.

Bamm Hollow wants to make sure that Middletown pays the higher costs in order to make their  proposed housing development more attractive to for the township to approve.

My thoughts on this are simple, I think that the township has every right to be outraged about this! This is a sneaky and underhanded attempt by Bamm Hollow Country Club to circumvent the zoning process. It is also going to cost Middletown taxpayers millions of dollars if Bamm Hollow is aloud to get away with it.

However, this problem to some extent is Middletown's fault. When the original agreement with Red Bank was in place (see letter), Middletown never transferred the funds to Red Bank, which caused Red Bank to then find another RCA source.

McCain Flip Flops Around

" 'The Straight Talk Express', Often Switches Course"

Reads the headline of an article posted on the CommonDreams website.
The article written by the Baltimore Sun Times Columnist Thomas F. Schaller.

Mr. Schaller has pointed out numerous occations during the past few weeks and months of how Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain has flip-flopped his positions to a number issues.

3 months ago John McCain was for the priviatization of Social Security, 3 weeks ago now he is not.
6 months ago, he believed that Bush's wiretapping program was illegal, 2 weeks ago he agreed with the President's use of these wiretaps.
During McCain's 2000 campaign he was against off-shore oil drilling, 1 week ago he is all for it.

It seems to me that John McCain is trying to please to many people to get elected and is willing to sell out in order to win at any cost or risks.

W. Front St. Bridge Town Hall Meeting

I attended the W. Front St. town meeting last night at Middletown's River Plaza  School.
About 30 peolpe showed up to voice their concerns over the project. Some of those to attend included  Middletown's Mayor Scharfenberger, Deputy Mayor Brightbill and Committeeman Patrick Short, with Short the only one to voice concern over the project.

Also in attendance was Republican Candidate for Freeholder John Curley, which left a few people in the room wondering why neither one of the Democratic candidates, Amy Mallet or Glenn Mason, could show up lend their support to the concerned residents.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday night in Red Bank at the Senior Citizens Center on Shrewsbury Ave @ 7:00 - 8:30 pm.

In today's APP there is a very good article written about the proceedings that describes events rather accurately and if you are interested or concerned about the project I recommend you take a look at it.

State Budget Agreement In Place

It seem as though Governor Corzine and Legislative leaders have reach a tentative budget deal.
The $32.8 billion plan will reduce spending by $600 million  and will not include any tax increases.

Kudos to the Governor for his efforts to reign in spending and put this state on course to firm financial footings.

What will Middletown do? No RCA's

The gates that surround Middletown may be coming down soon.

It seems that Middletown will no longer be able to rely on Regional Contribution Agreements (RCA'S) any longer in order to fulfill the towns obligations for affordable housing.

It would appear now that Middletown has no choice, but to build affordable housing for its citizens. This is something that Matt Morehead and his Bayshore Young Democrats have been making an issue of over the past year, much to the displeasure of the Middletown  Republican majority.

Middletown Delays Budget Again!

I wasn't able to attend last nights Middletown Township Committee meeting because of my work schedule, so I don't know the reason for the latest delay in adopting the budget, I was stunned this morning when I opened the APP to see that the township committee did just that.
What can they possible be waiting for? It has been well known for weeks now that there would be no increase in State aid. This budget is now six months overdue and any cost saving that where put in place would now be virtually non existent due to all of the emergency appropriation over the past six months needed to keep the town running.

APP Letter Forum Uproar

Whoa !!
What a fire storm my letter (See last post) to the APP caused today on their forum. There have been a few heated exchanges between a few of the responders. Please check it out for a good laugh.

I have audio clips of the exchange between Jim Grenafege and Mayor Scharfenberger as it pertains to his alledged suggestion to lay off Middletown police officers. It never happened.

The reporter from the Independent got it wrong when he wrote that Mr.Grenafege suggested to lay off members of the police force and you will be able to hear for yourselves after I post them on this blog in the next few days.

Until then keep checking in

Grenafege Did Not Call for Police Lay Offs

There has been a lot of talk around Middletown that Democratic candidate for Township Committee James Grenafege suggested that the number of police officers be reduced. This is wrong and completely off base and is just another example of how low the Middletown Republicans will stoop to smear anyone who disagrees with their positions.
During Mr. Grenafege’s time to speak, he made a number of suggestions such as combining the Library system with the Arts Center in order to save money because similar services are at times provided by both, such as, art and photography shows, music and dance programs. Deputy Mayor Brightbill could not grasp this idea or see that certain services overlap each other, so she dismissed the idea.
Mr. Grenafege then went on to ask if a productivity study was ever done across the township workforce, to determine if township personnel were being used efficiently and appropriately. If not, then maybe the workforce could be trimmed through layoffs. It was at this point that Mayor Scharfenberger and Township Attorney Bernard Reilly mentioned that the police department was the largest sub-group of employees in the township and began twisting Grenafege’s intentions into the apparent support of the reduction in the number of township police officers. When Police Chief Robert Oches spoke soon afterwards, it wasn’t so much of a condemnation against Mr. Grenafege’s comments, but more against the notion that his leadership was in question.
It should be stated that Chief Oches does a great job managing the police force. He was correct in stating that Middletown has the “lowest officer – per capita in the surrounding counties”. If anything, Middletown needs more police officers not less.
It was never the intent of Mr. Grenafege to suggest that the number of Middletown police officers be reduced through layoffs. If people attending the meeting that night came away with that feeling then they were wrong. Jim Grenafege is a thoughtful, passionate an honest resident of Middletown, who only wants the best possible service for it citizens.

InBev Attemps Take Over of Anheuser-Busch

In todays Business section of the APP a story appears about the hostile takeover attempt of InBeV to takeover Anheuser-Busch.
InBeV is the parent company of such brews as Becks, Stella Artois and Hoegaarden. InBev bid is believed to be worth $46.3 billion, which is $65 dollars per share.

When a Democrat is not a Democrat

For the past six years a Middletown resident and registered Democrat has been writing letters to the local papers expressing his displeasure with democrats in town. This person, Dominick Bongiorno, professes to be a life long democrat and an independent minded individual. Yet, since his first letter appeared in print back in Oct. 2002, all he has done is attack Middletown's Democratic candidates.

In his 2002 letter, Mr. Bongiorno supported the Republican incumbents, Mayor Patrick Parkinson and Committeeman Raymond O'Grady over the Democratic challengers, which on the surface, I can respect for the reasons that he stated in his letter.

Who really cares that his choices of Parkinson and O'Grady ended their tenure on the township committee in disgrace, Parkinson for sexually harassing the former township clerk and O'Grady being sent to jail for taking bribes as part of "Operation Bid-Rig"?

In two subsequent letters written between May and September of 2007, Mr. Bongiorno attacked newly elected Democratic Committeeman Patrick Short with obvious Republican talking points, which by the way, were delivered better by other republican supporters previously. A third letter written that October, again parroted other republican letters that appeared in print critical of the Middletown Democratic candidates and their campaign for office.

Mr. Bongiorno's most recent letter just printed in today's(6/11/08) Independent, truly shows his partisan republican roots. In his letter he now makes a feeble attack on the other democrat sitting on the township committee, Sean Byrnes.

His letter "Byrnes should join efforts to stop flood maps", Bongiorno falsely accuses Mr. Byrnes of delaying to vote on a resolution against the new FEMA flood maps.

The reason for the delay in adopting the resolution was not Byrnes's fault, but the Mayor,s and Committeeman Wilkens's. They were the ones playing partisan politics, insisting that Republican Assemblywoman Amy Handlin be given credit for taking on FEMA with her good for nothing petition against the flood maps.

It was Mr. Byrnes's contention that our U.S Representative Frank Pallone's name should also be included in the resolution along with Ms. Handlin's, being that Pallone's work in congress would be the only effective way of addressing the FEMA map controvery, because FEMA has stated that they have absolutely no intentions of addressing Handlin's petitions.

In the past, members of the Middletown Democrat Party have made numerous attempts to talk with and invite Mr. Bongiorno to
their gathering and Mr. Bongiorno has declined those invitations. It is quite obvious therefore that Mr. Bongiorno is conveniently a Democrat by label only. And for reasons only known to him, has decided that it is in his best interest to parrot and spread the local GOP propaganda and lies.

MiddletownMike's Column in the Courier

Hey check it out.

The first of many (I hope) Middletown Mike columns appeared on the Courier online news site. The column titled "Who is Obama?" is a brief background of the future President and the reasons why I am happy to now throw my support his way.

It was quite an affair, If I had to guess I would say that nearly 400 other people also showed up to express their support for the party Chairman Vic Scudiery, who like all of the party officers ran unopposed.

This will be Chairman Scudiery's 19th year leading the Democratic Party in Monmouth County and all who attended show the Chairman their appreciation several times with rousing applause during his acceptance speech.

A surprise guest made an appearance tonight as well, NJ State Democratic Chairman Joe Cryan dropped by to stir up the crowd while congratulating Vic Scudiery on his re-election as Monmouth County Chairman.

Middletown Democrats Reorganize

Tonight, the Middletown Democratic Executive Committee held their reorganization meeting to elect it's leadership for the next two year. Tonight's meeting, which was held at Airport Plaza in Hazlet was heavily attended by it's members. The room was abuzz with anticipation and everyone was feeling good.

There were no surprises in store for the attendees, all who were seeking leadership rolls were unopposed.

Joe Caliendo was re-affirmed as Chairman of the Middletown Democrats

Others who will be filling leadership positions for the Middletown Dems are as follows:

Marilyn Tuoghy - Vice-Chairwoman
Marilyn Maquire - Treasurer
Don Watson - Sargent at Arms
Mary Foster - Corresponding Secretary
Eileen Murphy - Recording Secretary

I wish to offer all of them my sincere congratulations and wishes for continued success. They all have done a fantastic job in leading the Middletown Democratic party the last few years, and I hope for many more.

Divided We Fail

Over the past few months I have been seeing ads in print and on TV for an organization call Divided We Fail.Org, you know they are the ones with the purple morphed image of the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant as their logo.

I finally tracted them down and have found out that this organization has been put together by the AARP.

Now I haven't been a fan of the AARP since they teamed up with the Bush administration and helped pass the abomination of a prescription drum plan, better known as "Medicare Part D". In my opinion AARP sold out and did more harm to its members then good with the sponsorship of that plan. Medicare Part D is nothing more than a government hand out to big pharma.

However, after surfing the site for divided we fail my mind is changing. AARP seems to be trying to makeup for its mistake with the prescription drug plan.

I encourage everyone to that a look at the site and get involved.

USA is Sitting on 50 yrs. Worth of Oil

In today's NY Post there is a series of articles about oil reserves that are sitting right underneath the United States, potentially enough to last us over 50 years! While I do not advocate drilling for oil on federal lands, it is getting to the point that we should start to discuss it. Take a look.

OIL: SHELL'S SHALE GAMBLE By RANDY UDALL and STEVE ANDREWS

OIL: OPEN UP FEDERAL LANDS By BEN LIEBERMAN

OIL: LOOK TO MONTANA By ROBERT HADDICK

And finally an article from John Crudele the Post's business columnist, that was published last week in the Post that reconfirms the Haddick article

Gas Prices

While we are on the subject of gas prices, do you want to know where to find the cheapest gas?
I found this handy little tool at msn.com
Just enter your zip code, and it tells you which gas stations have the cheapest prices (and the highest) on gasoline in your zip code area. It's updated every evening. Be sure to scroll down after getting a map of your area.

A Primer on Gasoline Prices

With the cost of oil above $135.per barrel and gasoline creeping close to $4.00 a gallon, have you ever wondered what the breakdowns are that contributes to that $4 per gallon retail cost at the pump?
A friend of mine turned me onto a brochure from the Energy Information Administration entitled
A Primer on Gasoline Prices.
It is an informative and easy to understand explanation of the factors that contribute to the cost of a gallon of gas.

Why did Andrews loose?

I picked up this tidbit of information from the Blue Jersey blog as reported by Juan Melli his link to Steve McQueeny explains it all. It seems that Rob Andrews quest to unseat Senator Lautenberg was doomed just hours after he announce his intentions. If you are intersted check it out. It is a fascinating example of behind closed doors politicking.

Clinton Conceedes Nomination to Obama

Hillary Clinton today finally gave up her pursuit of the White House and is officially backing Barack Obama for President of the United States. Does this mean she will be his running mate come November? We need to wait and see. In the mean time you can read all about at CNN.

The Return of the W.Front Street Bridge Project

A notice posted on the Middletown Township website has announced town meetings for residents of Middletown and Red Bank to attend and voice there concerns about the W.Front St. Bridge Replacement Project. Location, dates and times are as follows:

Middletown
Date:Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Time:7:00 pm — 8:30 pm
Place:River Plaza Elementary School
155 Hubbard Avenue
Middletown, NJ

Red Bank
Date:Thursday June 19, 2008
Time:7:00 pm — 8:30 pm
Place:Red Bank Senior Citizens Center
80 Shrewsbury Avenue
Red Bank, NJ

From what I have heard there will be two alternative plans presented to the public, neither of which are likely to be the final design. Instead, the orginal plan seems to be they way in which the engineers are planning to go, a fixed spanned curved bridge that lines up with the train tressle.

I will be on top of this story as more details of these plans become available.

Republican Candidate for Middletown Committee Interview

I just pick up a copy of this weeks Courier and was surprised to see that Republican Candidate for Township Committee, Anthony "Tony" Fiore submitted to an interview. Why am I surprised you ask? I am surprised because the Middletown GOP considers the Courier to be a rag and not worth the paper that it is printed on.

It is a standard, run of the mill, softball interview with the normal "Get to know you background stuff" written by the Couriers Melissa Gaffney, it's worth checking out the video.

It seems that Mr. Fiore grew up in Carteret, went to Carteret High School where he on the baseball and football teams, then attended Rutgers University where he received a degree in Political Science. Currently Mr. Fiore works for Prudential as a group benefits specialist. He moved to Middletown several years ago, is married and has one child. Anthony Fiore is currently a member of the Middletown Planning Board.

I am sure that you will be hearing a lot more from me in the future about Mr. Fiore and his run for office.

Column will start appearing in The Courier Online

I am going to be writing a column, every other week to start, at The Courier Online (www.BayshoreNews.com), beginning on Monday. At first, it will be every other week. Hopefully, I come up with enough stuff to be doing weekly columns in the future. The Courier Online is a great stop on the Web, and I encourage people to stop there. In the meantime, please don't forget to stop at Middletown Mike, your virtual diner online.

"Middletown Mike" goes to Bloggertown

My name is Mike Morris, and I am a Middletown resident who has been involved in the community for several years. I have been a life-long Bayshore area resident and want to comment about the community and what's happening here. I look forward to joining the very active blogging community in Northern Monmouth County and am sure this is going to be a lot of fun.

As this blog grows, expands and evolves I will comment on many things like the latest crypto-news (the best news stories you have never heard or read about), sports, book and restaurant reviews and the debunking of email rumours and maybe a few urban myths.
