A Call For Volunteers Arrives A Little Late To Help Pack Up Bayshore Branch Library Today

The last few postings have been from the Middletown Newsflash email that the township sends out to registered recipients. That email was sent out early this afternoon around 12:30, at 4:00 this afternoon  another newsletter was sent out requesting volunteers to help pack up the Bayshore branch of the Middletown Library. The funny thing is though, and I don't mean in a haha sort of way, the requested for help was sent out a little late for volunteers to show up today!

Also ironic is the fact that the Township Committee allowed this branch and others to close after depleting the Middletown Library of its surplus funds and now they want the area residents to help pack them up. Next, the township will be asking for volunteers to fix the Bayshore building up so the Recreation and Health Department can move into it!

If you're so inclined to help out with the packing, at least this message gave you enough time to make arrangements to volunteer on Monday
Today and Monday: Volunteers needed to pack up Bayshore Branch books!
About 20 able-bodied people are needed to pack up the remaining books at the now closed Bayshore Branch on Main Street in Port Monmouth. Volunteers must be able to bend and pick up books that are shelved from about eye level to the floor, and pack them into boxes. Volunteers must be 14 or older. You do NOT need to make an appointment - just show up!
Library staff will be on hand to provide instruction and supervise. The hours needed are:
Friday, March 15 from 2 - 5 pm
Monday March 18, from 11 am - 5 pm.+
FYI: Already, teachers in the public schools in the bay area have chosen several thousands of books for their students. The remaining books will be going to storm-damaged libraries in NJ and to a national charitable organization that distributes books to needy children, through libraries and schools.

Volunteers Needed Domestic Violence Response Team

Middletown Police Department is currently recruiting volunteers to serve on the Middletown Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT). In affiliation with 180 Turning Lives Around (180), and with the assistance of the response team volunteers, Middletown Police Department continues to make available this service to victims of domestic violence during the initial stages of a highly emotional and traumatic experience. 180 will be conducting an intensive 40-hour mandatory training course for Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) volunteers April 22nd – May 16th, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 6:00pm-9:30pm, in the courtroom at Hazlet Police Headquarters, 255 Middle Road in Hazlet. Applications are currently being accepted.

The volunteer advocates with 180’s DVRT Program are civilian members of the community who work collaboratively with law enforcement to provide support, information, and referrals to victims of domestic violence at Middletown Police Headquarters. Advocates also discuss with victims safety planning and their legal rights in regard to obtaining a Temporary Restraining Order. By providing empathy and crucial perspective of the situation, these highly-trained advocates help to empower victims to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. Read more

Croydon Hall Relief Center Operations Winding Down

The Croydon Relief Center, which was opened in the wake of Superstorm Sandy last year to provide emergency assistance to storm victims, will close April 1.

Middletown’s Volunteer Corps, which manages the center, has teamed up with Project Paul to ensure that residents can continue to access direct assistance such as food and clothes. The Croydon Hall Relief Center will remain open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2pm through end of March.

Remaining supplies housed at the Croydon Hall gym will be given to Project Paul as of April 1. Project Paul, located at 211 Carr Avenue in Keansburg, has been providing food, clothing and assistance with living expenses to the needy since 1980. Project Paul, a non-profit organization, offers the largest independent food pantry in Monmouth County, a thrift and furniture store, beds and mattresses to qualified residents, free income tax preparation and educational assistance.

In addition, the township is planning a Superstorm Sandy Resource Fair. Expected participants include representatives from FEMA, the state, non-profits, relief organizations and banking and insurance assistance. Event details will soon be posted to the township’s web page.

After hundreds of residents came forward to help their neighbors after Superstorm Sandy, the Township Committee officially established the Middletown Volunteer Corps in 2012 to manage the township’s wealth of kind-hearted volunteers, explained Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger.

“The Volunteer Corps is doing an outstanding job managing volunteer services during the recovery phase of Superstorm Sandy,” said Mayor Scharfenberger. “I’m looking forward to reviewing their suggestions regarding the permanent structure and mission of the Volunteer Corps as well as strategies for recruitment and retention of volunteers who will help in future emergencies and with community activities such as Middletown Day.”

Call 732-787-4887 for more information on Project Paul. Additional food pantries in the area include the Matawan United Methodist Pantry, Holy Family and St John’s Pantry in Hazlet, Keyport Ministerium, Calico Cat in Middletown, Middletown Assembly of God, and St. Anthony’s Food Pantry in Red Bank.

April 1 Extension for Sandy Disaster Assistance Registration

New Jersey residents impacted by Superstorm Sandy now have until April 1, 2013 to register for individual disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The deadline extension applies for homeowner, renter, and business registration with the Small Business Administration (SBA) for Disaster Loan Assistance, another important step in the disaster relief process to ensure survivors obtain all relief they are eligible for.

It is crucial that individuals register with FEMA and that businesses and individuals complete the SBA loan application so State officials can continue to compile an accurate, comprehensive picture of the damage and the need for additional disaster recovery assistance. Moreover, for businesses, an SBA Disaster Loan represents the best opportunity for disaster assistance. There is no obligation to accept an SBA disaster home loan even after applying, but homeowners and renters may become eligible for additional assistance in the future.

Of note, apart from the April 1 SBA Disaster Loan deadline for property damage, businesses also have until July 31 to apply for SBA economic injury disaster loans. All homeowners, renters, and businesses are encouraged to register with FEMA and SBA to ensure eligibility for future forms of aid.

People with storm losses in all counties can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov and via smart phone or tablet here. Survivors also can register by phone or 711/VRS by calling 800-621-3362, TTY800-462-7585.

State Reports Shows Middletown Crime Rate Decreased

Middletown’s overall crime rate has decreased about six percent, according to the latest New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report.

“The Middletown Police Department, its Quality of Life Unit and a very supportive community deserve a large measure of credit for the decreased crime rate,” said Mayor Anthony P. Fiore.

The township’s overall crime rate for 2011 is 13.2 incidents per 1,000 inhabitants compared to a rate of 14.0 incidents in 2010. The township’s total crime index dropped to 881 in 2011, from 930 in 2010. Violent crimes decreased to 36 in 2011, from 46 the year before. Non-violent crimes also went down to 845 in 2011, from 884 in 2010, according to the report.

The Police Department’s Quality of Life Unit is utilized to aggressively identify and arrest those for community offenses that affect the community’s quality of life. The unit was responsible for the arrest of over 200 subjects through the end of 2011 for offenses such as narcotics, burglaries, receiving stolen property, warrants and other criminal activity, Police Chief Robert Oches said.

The Police Department also works closely with the township’s two Neighborhood Watch groups – one in Ideal Beach and another in the Fairview section of town. “We are beginning to see the positive impact that such groups, working in conjunction with the Police Department, can have on our community,” the Mayor said. “I encourage other neighborhoods to follow in their footsteps in the coming year.”

The overall crime rate in Monmouth County dropped about 2 percent to 23.7 incidents per 1,000 inhabitants from 24.2 incidents. Statewide the crime rate increased about 3 percent to 24.7 incidents per 1,000 inhabitants, according to the report.

The 45th annual New Jersey State Police Crime Report is based on statistics submitted to the New Jersey Uniform Crime Reporting System by every New Jersey law enforcement agency for the year 2011. Information about 2012 will be released in December 2013. Visit www.njsp.org/info/ucr2011 to view the full report.

Oceanic Bridge Closed Due to Nor'Easter Damage
As a result of the nor’easter on Wednesday, Dec. 26,, the approach to the Oceanic Bridge from Navesink River Road is closed. All vehicle and pedestrian access to the Oceanic Bridge is prohibited. Marine access continues, according to the Monmouth County Public Information Office.

The embankment, or slope, on the approach to the Oceanic Bridge gave way and deposited soil and brush in the roadway. An assessment of the damage has been completed and the short-term repair work to stabilize the existing material on the slope is being worked on now. Upon completion, vehicular access to the bridge can resume. Long-term plans and work will further secure the slope and be completed at a future date.

As a result of the storm, there were also temporary local road and bridge closures due to flooding and high water levels on both county and local roads.

County Closes Oceanic Bridge On January 7-28 for Safety Upgrades
On Jan. 7, Monmouth County will begin a project to upgrade the safety systems on the Oceanic Bridge that connects Rumson and Middletown. The work requires the closure of the bridge to vehicles and pedestrian traffic during the estimated three week work period that is expected to conclude on Jan. 28. The Oceanic Bridge will be open to marine traffic during the upgrades.

To perform these upgrades, the County will close the bridge’s roadway so the contractor, IEW Construction Group can replace safety gates and perform other upgrades and maintenance work.

“This work is required because the existing equipment is outdated and replacement parts are becoming more difficult to find,” County Engineer Joseph M. Ettore, P.E. said. “We are maximizing this scheduled closure to have county crews perform repair work to damage caused by Superstorm Sandy and to provide NJ Natural Gas with access for their necessary repair and installation work.

Detours
All motor vehicle traffic on Bingham Avenue between Rumson and Middletown (CR-8) will be detoured west, through Fair Haven and Red Bank to Middletown, or east, through Sea Bright and Highlands to Middletown.

Northbound traffic from Rumson on Bingham Avenue (CR-8) should detour east through Fair Haven and Red Bank on East River Road (CR-10) to East Front Street to Route 35 North to Navesink River Road (CR-12A) in Middletown. Or, northbound traffic can detour from Bingham Avenue south, turn left onto Rumson Road (CR-520) to Sea Bright and turn left onto Ocean Avenue (Route 36 North) to Highlands and take the jug handle for Navesink Avenue in Middletown. Follow Navesink Avenue and turn left onto Locust Avenue and left again onto Locust Point Road (CR-8B).

Southbound traffic from Middletown should detour west on Navesink River Road (CR-12A) to Route 35 South in Red Bank. And then will follow detour signs to travel west on East Front Street (CR10)/ East River Road through Fair Haven and into Rumson. Or, southbound traffic can detour from Navesink River Road (CR-12A)/ Locust Point Road (CR-8B) and turn right onto Locust Avenue, turning right onto Navesink Avenue and then bear right onto Route 36 South through Highlands and into Sea Bright. M'town Newsflash 10/26/12: Preparing for Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy threatens to hit New Jersey as it moves up through the Atlantic in the days ahead Middletown Township has planned for what could happen as the storm reaches us early next week.

Township officials have begun readying township equipment including barricades, heavy equipment, chainsaws, pumps, generators and personnel. The township has set up the Township’s Emergency Operations Center as of Friday. Fire stations and first aid buildings will be manned as the storm gets closer. All emergency personnel are on standby by as the storm advances as well. The township is prepared to open its emergency shelter at Croydon Hall as needed. Please note the township shelter cannot accommodate pets.

Meanwhile, Middletown Township asks that residents make preparations before the storm hits as well. “I urge residents to prepare, plan and stay informed about the current weather situation,” said Mayor Anthony P. Fiore.

STAY INFORMED by registering to receive emergency alerts from Middletown Township. Residents can register through the town website at www.middletownnj.org. Alerts and updates are sent by text and e-mail. Please be sure to include your home or local address since messages are sometimes sent based on geographic location. Registration is not necessary to receive voice messages via landline phone. However, residents need to register their cell phone if they want to receive voice messages on their cells.

Updates will also be posted on the township website (www.middletownnj.org), the township television station (Comcast Channel 20 and Verizon Channel 26), Middletown Emergency Radio 1620 AM, Facebook at middletownnjtownhall and Twitter at middletownnj. Also, listen to local radio and television for the latest information on storms and other emergencies.

Residents should PREPARE for the upcoming storm now, said Emergency Management Coordinator Charles Rogers.

Assembling Kit of Emergency Supplies that includes batteries, a flashlight, radio, first-aid kit, medications, food and water to last three or more days, can opener, cooking tools, and toiletries.

Secure your property. Put away lawn furniture, outdoor decorations and other items that could be affected by high winds and rain. Residents in low-lying areas are reminded to move vehicles to higher ground.

Residents with home generators need to be aware that they must be placed at least 20 feet away from any habitable structure when they are in use for safety reasons. Now is also a good time to start up the generator and make it is in working order, he said. It is also a good idea to have extra fuel stored in the appropriate containers on hand

Residents should also have an EMERGENCY PLAN in place. Know your evacuation routes. In addition, your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan a way to contact one another, such as enlisting the help of a third party in another state as a contact, and review what you will do in different situations, Rogers said.

An emergency plan should also include financial preparations. Consider your insurance and financial needs in the event of a disaster. Also, take time to prepare a household inventory. If an evacuation is necessary, be sure to have cash or credit cards at your disposal.

Please limit 9-1-1 calls to emergencies only. In the event of power outages that do not involve hazardous conditions, contact JCP&L directly at 1-888-LIGHTSS (544-4877).

Public Works reminds residents that leaves should not be placed at the curb more than 7 days before their scheduled pick up date and the schedule does not begin until November 13th.

Middletown OEM works closely with the School District, Monmouth County, federal, state and local partners to prepare for virtually all hazards, natural or manmade, that could affect New Jersey’s families, communities and businesses.

Middletown Pays Tribute to 9/11 Victims

Members of the Middletown Township Committee will pay a silent tribute to the 37 residents who died in the World Trade Center tragedy with a wreath-laying at the Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, September 11th at 8:46 am. The time marks the start of the terrorist attacks 11 years ago when the first plane hit the towers.
Visitors are welcome at the Memorial Gardens from dawn to dusk. An American flag flown over the World Trade Center in 2011 on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will fly at the Memorial Gardens this year. The flag was presented to Mayor Anthony P. Fiore by Governor Chris Christie.
The Memorial Gardens rest under a canopy of trees and features a landscaped path with benches and a personalized memorial for each of the 37 residents. The gardens are located next to the Middletown Arts Center at 36 Church Street. The gardens are open to the public daily.
“It is important that Middletown and our great nation take a moment to remember the World Trade Center Tragedy and pay tribute to the friends and family we lost 11 years ago. It is critical that we seize this moment to stand tall and reaffirm that we, as proud Americans, remain vigilant in the war against terror,” said Mayor Anthony P. Fiore.
Flag banners have been installed as a tribute to the September 11th victims. The flag banners are hanging on telephone poles along Kings Highway, Church Street and Middletown-Lincroft Road. The banners are sponsored by local businesses, organizations and individuals. The flag banner display, spearheaded by Mayor Fiore, became part of the township’s annual 9/11 commemoration in 2011.
In addition, a cablecast of Middletown’s memorial service held in 2011 on the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center Tragedy is airing on the township’s cable channel through September 11, 2012.  Residents can view the channel on Comcast Channel 20 and Verizon Fios Channel 26.  Visit www.middletownnj.org/tv to view for the program schedule.

Rabies Alert
The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of a bat testing positive for Rabies. This new reports bring the total number of wild animals testing positive for Rabies this year to 5 (1 bat, 4 raccoons ).

A bat was tested after it was found to be in altercations with a dog. This incident happened in the area of Bryna Drive, located in the Lincroft section of Middletown. Luckily, the dog was up to date on its rabies vaccination and only needed to receive a rabies booster and a 45-day quarantine, according to Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto.

In light of finding a rabid bat, we would like to remind residents about the possibility of wildlife being infected with Rabies. Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. If this dog was not currently vaccinated, the owner would have been ordered to confine the animal for six months in an approved pen or facility, or humanely euthanized to protect the family members from possible exposure to the Rabies Virus, DeBenedetto added.

Residents should not be interacting with wildlife. Any homeowners that have bats nesting anywhere in their house should contact a licensed professional pest control service. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and please contact Animal Control at 732-615-2094 / 2097 immediately or contact the Police Department after hours and on weekends. Remember, Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is the vaccination of your pets and not handling or interacting with wildlife.
