Middletown NJ:

The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of a raccoon testing positive for Rabies. The animal had contact with 2 dogs on April 19, 2016 which required testing of the raccoon. Luckily the dogs had current rabies vaccinations. The incident occurred in the area of Richard Terrace and Stephenville Boulevard.

Residents should not be interacting with wildlife. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and please contact Animal Control at 732-615-2097 immediately or contact the Police Department at 732-615-2100 after hours and on weekends.

Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies vaccination. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid.

The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of a raccoon testing positive for Rabies. The animal had contact with a dog on December 24th, which required testing. The incident occurred in the area of Flomar Ave and Leonardville Road.

The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of a raccoon testing positive for Rabies. The raccoon was tested after possible interaction with a dog. This incident happened in the area of Millbrook Drive, located in the New Monmouth section of town. Luckily, no wounds were found on the dog according to Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto.

In light of finding a rabid raccoon, we would like to remind residents about the possibility of wildlife being infected with Rabies. Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. Domestic animals that are not properly vaccinated and come in contact with a rabid animal must be confined for six months in an approved pen or facility by the owner or humanely euthanized to protect the family members from possible exposure to the Rabies virus, DeBenedetto added.

The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of an eighth animal testing positive for rabies. The Animal Control Division responded after a resident noticed a raccoon was acting sickly in the backyard.

The incident happened in the area of Walnut Ave between Pine Street and Chestnut Street.

Over the past few months, the township Health Department has found and reported 6 raccoons and one fox that have tested positive for Rabies. The previous locations of the animals were:

The Middletown Township Health Department has received confirmation of a seventh animal testing positive for Rabies.

The Animal Control Division responded to calls regarding a fox that appeared ill walking around the Croydon Hall Complex located at 900 Leonardville Road, Leonardo. Animal Control tracked down the animal and confirmed that the fox was presenting symptoms of disorientation, wobbly gait, aggressiveness and not being afraid of humans. The fox was captured by Animal Control and sent for testing. The New Jersey Public Health Laboratory has found that the fox was Rabid.

Over the past 2 months, the township Health Department has found and reported 6 raccoons that tested positive for Rabies, but this is the first in a fox. The previous locations of the raccoons were:

• Route 35 between Kanes Lane and Kings Highway East
• Red Hill Road between Dwight Road and Deepdale Drive

The Middletown Township Health Department has received confirmation of a sixth raccoon testing positive for Rabies. The raccoon was captured and tested after a resident noticed the animal was acting sickly. The raccoon was found on Highway 35 between Kanes Lane and Kings Hwy East.



Previous cases were found over the last 2 months at the following locations:

• Red Hill Road between Dwight Road and Deepdale Drive,
• Michael Drive off of Nutswamp Road,
• Ueland Road off Nutswamp Road,
• Essex Street off of Bray Avenue,
• Clay Court off of Hartshorne Road,

The raccoon was tested after the resident noticed the animal was acting sickly in the backyard. The incident happened in the area of Red Hill Road between Dwight Road and Deepdale Drive.

Previous cases were found over the last 5 weeks at the following locations: Michael Drive off of Nutswamp Rd, Ueland Road off of Nutswamp Road, Essex Street off of Bray Ave, Clay Court off of Hartshorne Road.

The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of another raccoon testing positive for Rabies. This is the fourth report of a rabid animal this year. The raccoon was tested after it was killed by a dog. The incident happened in the area of Clay Court and Hartshorne Road. The pet owner contacted the Health Department after receiving the last Rabies Advisory sent out by the Township; otherwise, this incident may have gone unreported.


The dog involved in this altercation with the rabid raccoon was currently up to date on its rabies vaccination. As a result, it will be quarantined at home for only 45 days, as a precaution. This situation could have been more severe if the family pet was not properly vaccinated. Any dog or cat found to be in direct contact with a known rabid animal that is not properly immunized would be handled in a much different manner. The domestic animal would be placed under either a strict 6 month confinement in a cage with no human contact or would be humanely euthanized to protect the family and the public from the Rabies virus.

The raccoon was tested after it was found fighting with a dog. Luckily the family pet was currently vaccinated against Rabies and is only under a 45 day quarantine. The incident happened in the area of Ueland Road, located off of Nutswamp Road, Red Bank. This is the second raccoon found in the area, with the first one around Michael Drive.

The Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of two raccoons testing positive for Rabies this week.

8/14-8/20 JCP&L Vegetation Management Aerial Patrol
The following information is provided by JCP&L

Please be advised that the Haverfield Co. will be conducting JCP&L's Annual Supervisory Vegetation Management Aerial Patrol. Haverfield Co. will be conducting the inspections on all JCP&L Transmission Lines, expecting a beginning date of 8/14/2012 through 8/20/2012, weather permitting.

Patrols consist of Transmission Forestry Supervision personnel that accompanies the pilot in order to identify effectiveness of prior year's herbicide application and identification of any conditions warranting further inspection from the ground and/or corrective action.

The pilot will be in communication with any local Airports when in their airspace. The helicopter will be flying at a speed of about 35-40 mph above or alongside the lines, and may circle around for a closer inspection. The helicopter is Tail # N555JC-Grey with a black bottom and stripe.
These inspections are scheduled during the April through September time frame on an annual basis and cover all transmission facilities system-wide.


Rabies Alert
The Middletown Township Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of a bat testing positive for Rabies. This new reports bring the total number of wild animals testing positive for Rabies this year to 5 (1 bat, 4 raccoons ).

A bat was tested after it was found to be in altercations with a dog. This incident happened in the area of Bryna Drive, located in the Lincroft section of Middletown. Luckily, the dog was up to date on its rabies vaccination and only needed to receive a rabies booster and a 45-day quarantine, according to Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto.

In light of finding a rabid bat, we would like to remind residents about the possibility of wildlife being infected with Rabies. Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. If this dog was not currently vaccinated, the owner would have been ordered to confine the animal for six months in an approved pen or facility, or humanely euthanized to protect the family members from possible exposure to the Rabies Virus, DeBenedetto added.

Residents should not be interacting with wildlife. Any homeowners that have bats nesting anywhere in their house should contact a licensed professional pest control service. Middletown Day Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for Middletown Day 2012. The fall festival will be held rain or shine on Saturday, September 29 at Croydon Hall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Help is needed with carnival games, and other family fun activities. A commitment of four hours is needed in the morning or afternoon. Civic, fraternal, community, and school groups as well as businesses are always welcome and encouraged to participate. Brush Left at Curb Must Be Removed
The 2012 Curbside Brush Collection is complete. Brush that remains at the curb must be removed. Residents can bring brush to Recycling Center, 52 Kanes Lane, free of charge. Operating hours are Thursday through Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The center is closed Tuesdays and Wednesday. Violators are subject to fines of up to $2,000, up to 90 days imprisonment and/or community service for improper disposal of these materials. Child Seat Safety Checkpoint – Fri, Aug 24, 2:00–7:00 p.m.
Police officers trained as child passenger safety technicians will assist motorists with proper child safety seat installation as well as proper positioning and harnessing of a child. Checkpoints are at Police Headquarters, 1 Kings Highway. No appointment is necessary. In the event of severe weather, rain dates will be announced. The checkpoints, which are fund with state grant monies, are free and open to the public. Contact the Traffic Safety Bureau at 732-615-2045 for details.

Middletown Day will be rain or shine held on Saturday, September 29 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration is underway for the Business Showcase, Car Show and Craft Fair.

Business Showcase – Businesses are invited to offer free games and prizes, literature and giveaways to the thousands of people that visit Middletown Day. Businesses will be given a 10’ x10’ space for a fee of $250. Space is limited. Spots will be filled on a first-come first served basis. (Middletown Community Groups and Schools can request a free 10x10 space.) Register by September 14, 2012.

Car Show – The Lions Club will present this year’s Car Show. Restored and modified cars welcome. Free dash plaques and welcome bags will be provided first 100 entries. Advance registration is $20. Registration day of show is $25. More than 25 trophies and plaques will be presented. Car show is located in paved Parking Lot adjacent to Senior Center.

Craft Show – Don’t miss the chance to sell your wares to thousands of visitors. Single 10’ x 10’ spaces are $75 and double spaces are $130. Space is limited. Register by September 14.

Rabies Alert
The Middletown Township Animal Control Division has received laboratory confirmation of 2 wild animals testing positive for Rabies.

The first animal, a skunk was in a fight with a dog in the Leonardo section of the Township. In another incident, a Good Samaritan picked up a sick raccoon and brought it to a veterinarian on their own. This raccoon was found on Kings Hwy near Church St.

Luckily, the dog was up to date on its rabies vaccination and only needed a rabies booster and 45-day quarantine. The person who handled the raccoon was not exposed to the animal in the way they transported it.

In light of finding 2 rabid animals in one week, we would like to remind residents about the possibility of wildlife being infected with Rabies. Everyone should make sure that all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. In addition, residents should be aware that they should not be interacting with wildlife. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and please contact Animal Control at 732-615-2094 immediately.

Remember, Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is the vaccination of your pets and not handling wildlife.

Municipal offices will be closed Monday, December 26 and Monday, January 2, 2012.

Holiday Garbage and Recycling Collection Schedule

There will be no garbage collection Monday December 26, 2011. The next collection for residences with a Monday garbage collection will be Thursday December 29, 2011.

There will be no garbage collection on Monday January 2, 2012. The next collection for residences with a Monday garbage collection will be Thursday January 5, 2012.

There will be no recycling collection on Monday December 26, 2011 and January 2, 2012. Recycling will be scheduled to be collected on the following day.

Recycling Center Open Dec 27, 28 & Jan 3,4
The Kanes Lane Recycling Center will be OPEN on Tuesday & Wednesday December 27, 28 and January 3, 4 to accommodate residents who need to recycle cardboard, mixed paper and other items after the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

The Recycling Center is closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Regular operation hours will resume after January 4th. Hours are Thursday through Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Organization Day 2012
The Township Committee will hold Middletown's annual Organization Day meeting at noon on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Town Hall, 1 Kings Highway.

On the agenda will be the swearing in of the 2012 Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Under the township's form of government, the Township Committee designates two members to serve as mayor and deputy mayor for a one-year term. Committeeman Anthony P. Fiore will accept the oath of office to serve his second consecutive term. Committeewoman Elect Stephanie C. Murray will be sworn in as the newest member of the Township Committee. The term for each Committee member is three years.

Scores of volunteers traditionally attend to accept oaths of office to serve on more than a dozen township boards, committees and commissions. Each group focuses on different aspects of the community and works to enhance Middletown's quality of life. Residents are appointed to these positions by the Township Committee.

Christmas Tree Collection begins January 5, 2012. Click here for schedule. Trees can also be brought to the Kanes Lane Recycling Center, 52, Kanes Lane by Middletown residents only free of charge.

Homestead Rebate Update
The Middletown Tax Collection Office advises property owners that the state Homestead Benefit, for property tax year 2010, is being credited to the February 2012 tax quarter for applicable property owners. Adjusted February 2012 tax bills will be mailed on or before December 30, 2011. Please pay the adjusted amount shown on the bill by 4:00 pm February 10, 2012 to avoid interest charges. All questions regarding the homestead credit should be directed to the state Division of Taxation at 1-888-238-1233.
