Victor Scudiery Endorses Welle For Congress

For Immediate Release:
12/18/18

Red Bank, NJ – Victor Scudiery, who chaired the Monmouth County Democrats for 23 years, endorsed Josh Welle for Congress in the 4th Congressional seat held by Chris Smith for 37 years.

Josh Welle
In a statement, Scudiery said that “Josh understands the challenges our working families face to pay their mortgages, their bills and their health care. He’s taken the time to listen to our residents’ concerns and has innovative ways and ideas to make Washington work for us again.

“His experience in the Navy and in starting a tech business, give him critical insight into the jobs and careers of the 21st Century. He can help shape a new economy for our region and nation.

“I am particularly struck by Josh’s leadership skills. The Navy taught him well. He has the experience of a Naval Officer who must put service first and protect the rights of all people. We need more people who put service before self in Washington.”

Welle welcomed the support of the chairman, who helped to elect a Democratic majority to Monmouth County government and ended 35 years of Republican rule.

“I’m honored to have the support of such an important leader in politics and business,” Welle said. “Victor’s care and concern for his employees, our party and our institutions is legendary. With his counsel to help guide me, I believe we’re even closer to winning in November.”

Monmouth Democrats Take 2017 Victories

Last year's federal election results left many of us feeling out in the cold. Over the past twelve months, volunteers all across Monmouth County came together at the grassroots to make their voices heard and put their country back on track. This past Tuesday, state and local governments showed that they heard you with a blue wave at every level of politics.

Governor-Elect Phil Murphy won his election by 14 points, proving that New Jersey is done with Chris Christie's divisive politics for good.

Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey both won re-election by nearly 6,000 votes - becoming the first Democratic Assemblymembers to win re-election in the 11th District's history.

Monmouth County now has our first Democratic Senator in the 11th District - the first time in nearly 30 years, with former County Chairman Vin Gopal defeating longtime Senator Jennifer Beck by over 4,000 votes.

Monmouth Democrats also scored major wins at the local level.

Democrats kept Aberdeen ALL Democratic. Congratulations to Mayor Fred Tagliarini on his 2-1 re-election.

Democrats continue to hold a majority in Allentown - a town which we flipped 2 years ago after decades of Republican control.

Democrats have taken a majority in Atlantic Highlands - defeating two more Republican incumbents.

Democrats are up in Belmar with provisionals still left to be counted. Democrats will continue to be in the majority there.

Democrats knocked off two more Republican incumbents in Eatontown, with the victories of Jennifer Sherrod and Bridget Harris - the first time in years Eatontown Democrats have taken a majority on the Council.

Democrats won a big win in Fair Haven with Councilman Chris Rodriguez as top vote-getter. They are continuing to build a strong party there with Jessica Patel falling short by a few votes.

Freehold Borough kept its Council all Democratic with the re-elections of Councilmembers George Schnurr and Michael DiBenedetto

Democrats kept Keyport ALL Democratic - 6-0.

Democrats swept Lake Como continuing to keep it 7-0.

Democrats won a big election in Little Silver with the election of Councilman-Elect Christopher Healy.

Manasquan Democrats kept their Democratic majority with the re-elections of Councilmembers Michael Mangan, Jeff Lee and Joseph Bossone.

Democrats won big in Marlboro with the re-elections of Councilmembers Jeff Cantor, Scott Metzger and Carol Mazzola. Monmouth County's 3rd largest town continues to be all Democratic.

Democrats have taken a majority in Matawan - it is now 7-0 Democrat in Matawan - just 2 years ago it was 7-0 Republicans and in 3 straight cycles, Democrats have defeated all of the Republican incumbents.

Democrats made inroads into Neptune City, electing their second Councilmember, Glen Kocsis. Congratulations to Councilwoman Pamela Renee in her re-election.

Congratulations to Committeeman Kevin McMillan on a big victory keeping Neptune Township 5-0 Democrats.

Democrats defeated another Republican incumbent in Red Bank giving us 5-2 control of the governing body.

Democrats swept Roosevelt continuing the all Democratic governing body - Congratulations to new Mayor Peggy Malkin.

Congratulations to Councilman Charles Rooney in Sea Bright winning as the top vote-getter!

In Spring Lake, Councilwoman Syd Whalley was re-elected comfortably.

Democrats beat an incumbent Republican in Shrewsbury Township, gaining 3-0 majority.

Democrats ran strong races in Colts Neck, Englishtown, Freehold Township, Hazlet, Holmdel, Interlaken, Manalapan, Middletown, Millstone, Oceanport, Shrewsbury Boro, Spring Lake Heights, Union Beach, Upper Freehold, Wall, and West Long Branch, and worked hard to continue to build the Democratic Party in their respective towns. We are proud of all of them.

Donald Trump may have carried Monmouth County in 2016, but when we pushed back in 2017, it paid off. We are very proud of our outstanding county candidates who worked hard and made the races competitive - Margie Donlon and Brian Wilton did a fantastic job. We also want to thank Sean Byrnes, Mariel Didato, Tom Giaimo, David Lande, Amy Cores, Gene Davis, Nirav Patel, Eliot Colon, and Kevin Scott for running strong races in their legislative districts.

This year, along with Virginia to the south and Washington to the west, New Jersey showed that the Democratic Party is far from over. After months of soul-searching and perseverance, we worked hard to organize and move our party forward. Because of all of us, New Jersey has a Democratic governor once more, and flipped a Senate seat that many once thought untouchable.

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels, however. We will continue to keep working toward the Congressional midterms in 2018, and to aggressively challenge Republicans at the local, legislative, and county levels in the cycles to come. Thank you as always to all of our volunteers, donors and supporters who helped us achieve these victories.

Monmouth County Democrats Launch Website Highlighting Senator “Both Sides” Beck’s True Record

For Immediate Release
September 18th, 2017

Monmouth County Democrats Launch Website Highlighting Senator “Both Sides” Beck’s True Record; a website designed to expose Republican Senator Jen Beck’s legislative record.

Hazlet - Today, the Monmouth County Democrats announced the launch of their new website www.BothSidesBeck.com. The website details Republican Senator Jen Beck’s legislative record on issues important to Monmouth County families.

Senator Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth)

“Senator Jen Beck has a bad habit of glossing over her true voting record and claiming to be on both sides of multiple issues,” said Matt Anderson, Executive Director of the Monmouth County Democrats. “This website is designed to give voters a closer look at Both Sides Beck’s actual voting record and see how many times she voted against Monmouth County families’ interests.

“From property taxes to equal pay, Beck has claimed one thing yet voted another way, often times even flipping her original vote just to support Governor Christie’s agenda. Monmouth County families deserve better than Both Sides Beck.”

The website is live and can be viewed at www.BothSidesBeck.com.

Monmouth County Chairman, Vin Gopal To Step Down Tomorrow To Challenge Beck For LD 11 Seat

Monmouth County Chairman, Vin Gopal, announced in an email last night that he was stepping down as County Chair in order to challenge incumbent Monmouth County State Senator Jennifer Beck for her seat in LD 11. Word of Gopal's possible intention to challenge Beck was first reported by Observer.com yesterday. The Asbury Park Press is reporting this story today.

Gopal made it official last night with an email blast to county committee members last night:

Dear Monmouth County Democrats,

For the past 4 and ½ years, I have have had the honor of volunteering as your Monmouth County Democratic Party Chairman. I have enjoyed every day of my service to this Party. Together we have created an eminent force against the Republicans as we defeated them year after year in historically Republican municipalities and Legislative Districts.

As your Chairman, my proudest achievement has been growing this party while defeating Republicans across the County. In the past 4 and ½ years, together we have achieved the below successes…

- Built a strong county committee and aggressive local donor fundraising program with a full-time staff to serve the Monmouth County Democrats.

- The election of the first Democrats since 1989 to be elected in the 11th Legislative District - Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey, to breakup the all Republican Legislative body.

- Replaced Republican incumbents and Elected Democratic Mayors in Atlantic Highlands, Matawan, Ocean Township, Oceanport, Shrewsbury, and Spring Lake Heights. We also won the Mayor’s Seat for the first time in 16 years in Monmouth’s 2nd Largest Town, Howell. 3 Years ago, we had 14 Democratic Mayors in this county. Today, we have 23 Democratic Mayors.

- For the first time in over twenty years, we elected Democrats on the Governing bodies of Neptune City and Fair Haven, two towns that have not seen Democrats elected in over twenty years and both towns now run competitive elections.

- Ended the Republican Majority in Allentown for the first time in twenty years.

- Built upon the successes of former Chairman Victor Scudiery and maintained full Democratic Majorities in Aberdeen, Belmar, Freehold Borough, Keyport, Lake Como, Manasquan, Marlboro and Roosevelt.

- Swept all 4 Council Seats in Bradley Beach - Today the entire Bradley Beach Council is Democratic.

- Ended the Republican Majority in Sea Bright

- Added a Democrat seat on the Spring Lake Council

- Welcomed a new Democratic Mayor in Asbury Park and a Democratic Mayor in Loch Arbour.

- Broke the all GOP Township Committee for the first time since 2008 in Manalapan with the election of a Democrat.

- 6 to 0 Majority on Keyport Council now defeating every GOP Councilmember - 2016 election saw the election of two women who beat two incumbent men.

- Elected the first African-American woman Mayor of Atlantic Highlands

- Ended the Republican Majority in Eatontown

- Elected Democrats in Farmingdale for the first time in years, making the town politically competitive.

- Elected and re-elected two Democrats on the Hazlet Township Committee - making the Bayshore town a battleground.

- Built strong local Democratic Parties in traditional Republican strongholds such as Freehold Township, Holmdel, Howell, Millstone, Shrewsbury Borough, Middletown, West Long Branch and Wall Township.

- Made county races competitive, continuing to get 45% to 46% of the vote county-wide, drastically outperforming the top of the ticket in every cycle.

- We made Union Beach a politically competitive town, winning council seats for the first time in over a decade in 2013 and running competitive races in every cycle.

- In 2015, we had a total of 41 Municipal winners, including 5 NEW Democratic Mayors in Ocean Township, Matawan, Oceanport, Atlantic Highlands, and Spring Lake Heights.

- Continued to challenge Governor Chris Christie’s disastrous policies.

Together, we have built a strong Democratic Party which will continue to hold our ideals.

I have decided to enter the race for State Senate in New Jersey’s 11th Legislative District. I do not believe that candidates or elected officials should serve as the county party chair - I believe in transparency and integrity in government and I do not believe that party leaders should be candidates for public office. In my 4 and ½ years volunteering as County Chairman, I have given thousands of hours towards the Democratic Party. I have loved every minute of it. I will continue as a former Chairman to do what I can to support our party, but I will be focused during the next ten months in joining Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey on the 11th District ticket to beat incumbent Senator Jen Beck.

I want to thank our vice Chair Mary Foster, our State Committee Members, our Mayors and elected officials, all our candidates who put their names on the ballot these past several cycles, our countless volunteers and donors, our outstanding Women’s Caucus Members, our State Chairman John Currie, our Congressman Frank Pallone and each and every one of you.

My resignation will take effect Wednesday, January 4th at 12pm. I am confident that Acting Chairwoman Mary Foster will do a great job in running the party until a new Chairperson is elected.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all you do to support and promote good government.

Vin Gopal

I wish Vin well on this endeavor. Defeating Jennifer Beck won't be easy but if it's to happen, 2017 is the year. In a gubernatorial election year with anti-Republican/Chris Christie sentiment running high, Democrats have a real chance to take the 11th LD after last year's success of Houghtaling and Downey's assembly victories.

CBS News Superstorm Sandy in Belmar Coverage / Matt Doherty for Monmouth County Freeholder

This 2012 video from CBS News documenting the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and the recovery efforts put forth by Belmar Mayor, Matt Doherty, is one of the best reasons I can think of to be voting him on November 8th for Monmouth County Freeholder.

He was a true leader for the residents of Belmar then (and now) and will be for the residents on Monmouth County once elected.

If you haven't seen Doherty's recent campaign commericals which have been running on various cable channels, you can do so below.

Democrats Exploring Legal Options; Imploring Voters To Stand Against Intimidation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 13, 2016

HAZLET – Following a report in the Asbury Park Press that voters throughout Monmouth County are having their Vote By Mail ballots returned, Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal announced that he will be exploring legal options and called on voters throughout the county to refuse to be intimidated by the chaos and confusion being created as a result in advance of Election Day.

“We have run a vigorous Vote By Mail program so that Monmouth County voters without transportation or the ability to vote on November 8th would be able to make their voices heard against candidates Donald Trump, Shaun Golden, Rosemarie Peters, Tom Arnone, Serena DiMaso and their entire team. As the Monmouth County Republican Chair, Shaun Golden has publicly stood in silent support of Trump for months, even as he denigrated veterans and seniors and escalated his racist and misogynistic rhetoric day after day. Now, with just days remaining before Election Day and people across Monmouth County casting their votes, thousands may be disenfranchised.

The inexplicable inability of the County Clerk Christine Hanlon’s office to properly design the Vote By Mail envelopes, even after being informed of the problem as far back as June, has already caused chaos and confusion among voters that will only heighten as we approach Election Day. While we will be exploring all legal options, we are also imploring Monmouth County voters to not be intimidated by this latest development and to immediately inquire into how they can make sure their votes count in this important election.”

Monmouth County Republican Chairman Shaun Golden, previously labeled “a strong leader” by County Clerk Christine Hanlon, is on this year’s ballot for re-election as County Sheriff.

Monmouth County Dem Candidates Report Over 255K Raised at Primary Campaign Deadline

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 8, 2016

Monmouth County Dem Team also reports over $205k Cash On Hand with almost 82% of total contributions from supporters for $300 or less

HAZLET – The Monmouth County Democratic campaigns for Sheriff, Surrogate and Freeholder today announced that they raised over $255,000 ($255,210.18) in their Primary campaign fundraising report. The team continues to boast overwhelming grassroots support throughout the county with almost 82% of the over 800 total contributions from supporters reported coming in at $300 or less, almost 63% of total contributions reported at $200 or less and almost 47% of the total contributions reported coming in for $100 or less.

The overwhelming financial support being offered from people throughout Monmouth County represents just some of the feedback for candidate for Sheriff Jeff Cantor, candidate for Surrogate Vincent Solomeno, and candidates for Freeholder Matt Doherty and Sue Fulton have received as they travel throughout the county highlighting the team’s record of service in our communities. They have also heard the frustrations of middle class taxpayers on the receiving end of skyrocketing taxes as a result of Republican County Chairman and incumbent Sheriff Shaun Golden’s control over every office in county government.

Most recently, people across the county have expressed their frustration with Chairman Golden and the Monmouth County Republican Committee’s refusal to condemn presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump for his claim weeks ago that women seeking abortions should be “punished”, his continued defense of Trump University amidst allegations of fraud and “elder abuse”, his repeated calls for a wall to be built to discriminate against people and his efforts to advance the conspiracy theory that President Obama supports ISIS.

While Sheriff Golden and his running mates have remained silent when asked by reporters to endorse or denounce Trump’s candidacy for fear of alienating those they were elected to represent, their support for his candidacy was made clear when they began advertising Trump signs on the Monmouth County Republican Committee website ((http://monmouthrepublican.org/lawnsign/).

Monmouth County Sheriff candidate Jeff Cantor currently holds the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. Cantor has been in the U.S. Army, both active and in the reserves, since 1985. He has served our country around the world, including deployments to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. After starting as a Private First Class, Cantor rose through the ranks and has earned the rank of Colonel in the Army Reserves. He has also been a Councilman in Marlboro since 2004 where he has served as the Council liaison to the Police Department and as a member of the Local Emergency Planning Council. Cantor is a licensed Emergency Medical Technician for the Township of Marlboro and has been a member of the Marlboro First Aid Squad since 1996, volunteering countless hours to protect and serve the population of Marlboro as well as the surrounding towns.

(Solomeno, Doherty, Cantor and Fulton)
Jeff Cantor has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal (2nd award); He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Combat Action Badge and the Basic Parachutist Badge.

Raised in Union Beach, Monmouth County Surrogate candidate Vincent Solomeno graduated from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) at Sandy Hook before earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Scranton. He is the recipient of the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship and J. William Fulbright Scholarship. As a Fulbright Scholar, he received a Master of Arts from the University of Amsterdam for his study of the roots of radicalization in Muslim and non-Muslim communities in the Netherlands.

Solomeno is a Captain in the New Jersey Army National Guard. He has served as an Engineer platoon leader, logistics manager, rear detachment commander, and public affairs officer. From 2010 - 2014, Solomeno was the full time Command Historian of the New Jersey National Guard. He returned in September 2015 from an overseas deployment to Central and Southwest Asia. A recipient of the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, he was called to active duty during and after Superstorm Sandy, working in devastated communities across Monmouth County.

Freeholder candidate Matt Doherty has been Mayor of Belmar since January, 2011 and previously served as a Councilman in town starting in 2007. Since becoming Mayor, Belmar residents have yet to see a tax increase on the municipal level under Mayor Doherty’s leadership.

Doherty also led Belmar through the devastating impacts of Superstorm Sandy, working to provide food, shelter and clothing to affected residents in the aftermath of the storm. He then began immediately working with local, county, state and federal officials to rebuild and improve Belmar. Doherty worked tirelessly to successfully fulfill his pledge to get every family in town impacted by Superstorm Sandy back in their homes. A Financial Advisor, Mayor Doherty graduated Georgetown University with a BA in government in 1995 and went on to earn his Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University in 1997. He and his wife, Maggie, are raising their three children, Hannah, Claire and Séamus, in Belmar.

Freeholder candidate Sue Fulton is a 1980 West Point graduate, part of the first class to admit women. She served as a platoon leader and company commander in Germany, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Army Captain. She helped found several military organizations, including Knights Out and OutServe, working on the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell.” Since leaving the military, she has managed businesses at companies like Procter & Gamble and Merck for over 20 years. In 2011, President Obama appointed Fulton to the West Point Board of Visitors, and she currently serves as Chair.

Sue and her partner of 20 years, Penny Gnesin, currently live in Asbury Park and were the first same-sex couple to marry at the Cadet Chapel at West Point.

Monmouth County Republican Chair and County Sheriff Shaun Golden and his Candidates for County Office on Trump: . . ?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From Monmouth County Democrats
6/10/16

“It’s time for Golden to tell his ticket where they stand on Trump so they can let Monmouth County voters know.”

HAZLET- Editorial writers, columnists, politicians and voters everywhere are continuing to talk about Donald Trump’s racist, bigoted remarks made in the aftermath of revelations that his Trump University was preying on hard-working middle class families and seniors.

Some Republican Leaders have come out against their presumptive nominee for President and some are attempting to rationalize Trump’s statements.

However, Monmouth County Republican Chairman and candidate for Sheriff Shaun Golden and his entire hand picked County ticket have silently shrunk away from the Trump controversies. Rather than let their constituents know where they stand, they continue to put their partisan politics before the communities they were elected to serve in the hopes that voters forget by November 7th.

It’s time for Golden to tell his ticket where they stand on Trump so they can let Monmouth County voters know.

This is what people are saying in Monmouth County, across New Jersey and throughout the country:

http://politickernj.com/2016/06/trump-based-attacks-surface-as-state-republicans-stay-mum/

“We expect office holders in Monmouth County to stand against racism, bigotry and anyone who would take advantage of hard-working middle class families and seniors,” wrote Democratic freeholder candidates Sue Fulton and Matt Doherty. “Donald Trump and his Trump University targeted and took advantage of countless people – and now he is attempting to defend that behavior with more bigotry and bias.

“Mr. Trump is the standard-bearer for their party; we need to whether our office-holders share Mr. Trump’s values, or whether they will put their community ahead of party loyalty.”

http://www.app.com/story/opinion/editorials/2016/06/08/christie-trump-defense-racist-remarks/85608982/

Trump’s remarks were purely racist, despite denials by Trump himself and by Christie. He made a judgment about the judge based solely on his heritage. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said Trump’s comments were “the textbook definition of racist comments” — a textbook Trump could fill by himself with his bigoted remarks about Mexicans and Muslims and his sexist remarks about women.

Nonetheless, Ryan said he would support Trump regardless. But at least he repudiated Trump’s remarks instead of trying to rationalize them, as Christie did.

http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2016/06/chris_christies_endless_ambition_leads_him_to_embr.html

He was asked about Trump's novel assertion that a judge of Mexican descent should be barred from presiding over the Trump University fraud case. Because, you know, he's Mexican.

Trump later added that Muslim judges should probably be barred as well.

Republicans everywhere winced. Their undisputed leader was slicing up America into racial and religious fiefdoms, and sowing profound disrespect for the rule of law.
Should black defendants now insist on having black judges? Whites can only trust fellow whites? Christians can only trust fellow Christians? If we followed Trump down this wormhole, where would it end?

Forget about the freedom and prosperity that the rule of law has brought: Let's go tribal.
Suddenly, the comparison to Adolf Hitler made by Gov. Christie Whitman seems prophetic.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who endorsed Trump only a few days ago, called it "a textbook definition of a racist comment."

http://www.northjersey.com/opinion/trump-may-become-the-textbook-definition-of-racism-1.1613971

Horrible things happen when average people do nothing, when they refuse for self-serving purposes (See: Christie) to acknowledge a truth that needs to be acknowledged. The candidacy of Donald Trump is built on fear, frustration and racism.

As Edmund Burke said, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. And when it comes to Donald Trump, there are invertebrates that have shown more spine than (Iowa) Sen. Charles Grassley.

http://www.salon.com/2016/06/07/no_way_out_for_trump_backing_republicans_hes_doubling_down_on_racist_remarks_as_gop_leaders_struggle_to_respond/

“The GOP Trump train was already full of uneasy passengers, people who know he’s a charlatan but are too cowardly to take a principled stand. Things escalated this week when Trump let loose a string of nakedly racist statements about a Mexican-American U.S. District Judge (Gonzalo Curiel) and promptly followed it up with another, equally racist statement about a hypothetical Muslim judge . . . “

“You’d think that time would’ve occurred when Trump proposed banning all Muslims from entering the country or when he suggested killing the families of suspected terrorists or when he propounded birther conspiracies, but nope, this was the final straw. As I wrote yesterday, the time for Republicans to criticize Trump has long past. Claiming an American judge can’t do his duty on account of his Mexican heritage is revolting, but no more or less revolting than a dozen other things Trump has said or done. Hence all this moralizing from Republicans feels flat and empty at this point.
At any rate, you can expect more angst from Republicans in the coming months. The price of hopping aboard the Trump train is going to rise immeasurably between now and November. Trump’s statements about Judge Curiel have been universally loathed, and yet he’s made it clear he has no intention of backing away from them. In fact, as is his custom, he’s doubling down . . . “

“None of this is surprising. This is who Trump has been since he lunged into presidential politics. He won’t back down. He’s going to own every stupid and hateful thing he says. And now, because they opened their doors to him, the Republican Party is going to own it too.”

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/06/trump-house-republicans-racism-224000

Or, in the case of endangered Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), ditching Trump altogether.

By the end of the day, Trump had issued a new statement blaming the media for his problems, without apologizing to the Indiana-born federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over lawsuits against Trump University. Trump then declared he was done commenting on the matter.

But the damage was already done.

"I have spent my life building bridges and tearing down barriers — not building walls. That's why I find Donald Trump's belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding over his case is not only dead wrong, it is un-American," the first-term senator said. "After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world."

Gopal Seeks Reelection As Monmouth Dems Leader

Monmouth County Democratic Chairman, Vin Gopal, has announced his intensions to seek reelection as County Chairman via an email blast to members of the Democratic County Committee.

In the 4 short years that he has lead the Party, Chairman Gopal has done an extremely effective job of getting Democrats elected countywide and his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. Monmouth County has become the new battleground for NJ politics.  Democratic leaders from all parts of the state are coming to Monmouth County looking for his endorsement because they feel that the Republican hold on Monmouth County is slipping and the opportunity to make inroads have been paved.

Chairman Gopal has my support!

Fellow Democrat:

After four years as Democratic Party Chairman in Monmouth County, I am proud of what we have accomplished together. We have competitive elections at the county and local levels that have never been competitive before, Democrats have won majorities in towns throughout the County that once were under solid Republic control, and for the first time since 1991 the two Assembly seats in the 11th Legislative District are occupied by Democrats.

These accomplishments have forced statewide Democrats to take notice of what is going on right here in Monmouth County, and the state of our party is stronger than ever before.

Thank you for your tireless dedication, for your vocal support of Democratic candidates and democratic values, and for donating your time and your hard earned money to our party. It has been a rewarding and exciting journey in Monmouth County, one that would not have been possible without you.

Today, I am emailing our 900 Democratic County Committee Members to humbly ask for your support as I seek re-election as Chairman of the Monmouth County Democrats.

I have had the privilege of working with each and every one of you to continue to build upon the great work of my predecessor and I hope that you will not only give me the pleasure of continuing to do so in a third term as Chairman, but that you will take some time to reflect upon the great accomplishments of our party over our last four years together.

The following are just some of what we have accomplished in the last four years...

- The election of two state legislators in the 11th District (all Monmouth County - 18 towns from Colts Neck to Neptune) for the first time since 1991

- Election of a Democratic Mayor in Matawan, defeating an 8 year Republican incumbent

- Election of a Democratic Mayor in Atlantic Highlands, replacing an 8 year Republican incumbent

- Winning a Democratic Majority in Allentown for the first time in over 30 years

- Election of new Democratic Mayor in Spring Lake Heights, replacing Republican incumbent

- Election of the first Democrat Elected in Fair Haven in over 30 years, now making it a swing town

- Election of the first Democrat Elected in Neptune City in over 25 years, now making it a swing town

- Election of first Democrats Elected in Farmingdale in over a decade, now making it a swing town

- Breaking the all GOP Committee in Hazlet Township, now having 2 members on the governing body

- Election of first Democratic Mayor in Loch Arbour in over a decade

- Breaking the all GOP Committee in Manalapan for the first time since 2008

- Election of first Democratic Mayor in Ocean Township in over a decade

- Election of first Democratic Mayor in Oceanport in over a decade

- Election of Democratic Councilmembers in Union Beach for the first time in over a decade

- Maintaining Strong Democratic Majorities in towns throughout Monmouth County - from Aberdeen to Belmar and Marlboro to Lake Como - towns which have helped build the county party

Once again, thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Vin Gopal

Chairman, Monmouth County Democrats

Gopal And Cantor To Golden: Do You Support Donald Trump?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 24, 2016

HAZLET- Following Republican Presidential front runner Donald Trump's repeated calls to reinstitute waterboarding as a means of interrogation and for torture methods that would go further, Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal and Monmouth County Democratic candidate for Sheriff Jeff Cantor, a 30 year military veteran, released the following statement asking Monmouth County Republican Chairman and County Sheriff Shaun Golden if he supports Trump for President.
" Like millions across the world, we were appalled to see the most recent atrocities carried out by those that would seek to plunge our world into chaos and violence. Also, like many, we want to see everyone involved brought to justice so that they may be punished and so they may shed light on any other potential plots against humanity. However, in a civilized society, torture can never be the answer. The fact that the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for President, Donald Trump, proudly stands in favor of torturing suspects is truly disturbing. While it may be a bit unorthodox for both the Democratic Chairman and the Democratic candidate for Sheriff to both call on Shaun Golden to say whether he endorses Donald Trump for President, it is entirely appropriate in this case given the fact that Golden serves two very important and influential roles in Monmouth County.

Serving as Monmouth County Sheriff, Shaun Golden is the top law enforcement official in Monmouth County, and county residents deserve to know if he stands in support of someone who strongly and proudly advocates in favor of torture. As the Monmouth County Republican Chairman, Shaun Golden most certainly needs to take into consideration the fact that the head of the Republican Party in New Jersey, Chris Christie, has been among Donald Trump's most outspoken supporters. While these two positions may be at odds, it is time for Shaun Golden to let everyone know if he stands in support of Donald Trump. We would appreciate the Chairman's answer before his hand-picked Freeholder candidates pass the budget for his Sheriff's Department tonight."

Jeff Cantor previously announced his candidacy for Monmouth County Sheriff. Jeff Cantor has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal (2nd award); He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Combat Action Badge and the Basic Parachutist Badge.

Over 300 Supporters Help Kick Off 2016 Monmouth County Campaign

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 15, 2016

BELMAR MAYOR DOHERTY AND FARMINGDALE COUNCILMEMBER IMMEN KICKOFF FREEHOLDER CAMPAIGNS

BELMAR – Surrounded by over 300 supporters, including New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, State Democratic Party Chairman John Currie, U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone, Union County Sheriff and Former State Democratic Party Chairman Joe Cryan, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, Former US Senator Bob Torricelli, State Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (Hudson), State Assemblyman Jamel Holley (Union), State Assemblyman Daniel Benson (Mercer), State Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling (Monmouth), State Assemblyman Joann Downey (Monmouth), Former State Assemblyman Jason O'Donnell (Hudson), Middlesex County Freeholder Ken Armwood, Essex County Freeholder Leonard Luciano and mayors and councilmembers across Central New Jersey including Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik, Atlantic Highlands Mayor Randi LeGrice, Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long, Manasquan Mayor Ed Donovan, Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini, Matawan Mayor Joe Altomonte, Neptune Mayor Kevin McMillan, Spring Lake Mayor Jennifer Naughton, Lake Como Mayor Brian Wilton, Red Bank Mayor Pat Menna, Brick Township Mayor John Ducey and dozens of other councilmembers and mayors from across Central New Jersey, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty and former Farmingdale Council member Carly Immen formally kicked off their campaign for the two seats that will be contested on Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders this November.

Doherty and Immen join Sheriff candidate Jeff Cantor and Surrogate candidate Vincent Solomeno as prospective candidates on the Democratic slate for Countywide office in November.

“We believe in putting people before politics,” said Mayor Doherty. “It’s that belief that has allowed us to attract great new businesses to Belmar that put people to work, help keep taxes down and provide tremendous destinations for residents and visitors alike. We have had no tax increases in Belmar in five years, while just last year the County freeholders raised property taxes millions of dollars on middle class families. That is simply unacceptable.”

“I’m not running for a cause or to protest something,” continued Doherty. “I’m running because it is becoming almost impossible to raise a family in Monmouth County with the skyrocketing county taxes. I’m running to help attract more businesses countywide and I’m running because more needs to be done to get Sandy impacted families countywide back in their homes. And our team is running to win.”

Matt Doherty has been Mayor of Belmar since January, 2011 and previously served as a Councilman in town starting in 2007. Since becoming Mayor, Belmar residents have yet to see a tax increase on the municipal level. He is a Financial Advisor for Metlife Premier client group of New Jersey in Wall. Mayor Doherty graduated Georgetown University with a BA in government in 1995 and went on to earn his Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University in 1997. He and his wife, Maggie, are raising their three children, Hannah, Claire and Séamus, in Belmar.

“County property taxes have continued to rise because Monmouth County government has had no checks and balances of late,” said Carly Immen. “Instead of running government the same way you would run your household or business finances the Freeholder Board has become a solely partisan operation consistently draining money from the pockets of middle class taxpayers. My husband and I are raising our family here in Monmouth County and there is nothing more important to me than ensuring that we get things back on track and moving in the right direction, and I believe that public service is the most direct route towards achieving that goal.”

Carly Immen proudly served as a member of the Farmingdale Borough Council and successfully formed a self-supporting Recreation Commission to bring community events and programs to residents of all ages, a first for Farmingdale. She also led the effort to build and install a Little Free Library in town and is currently active in the Farmingdale School PTA and as a Farmingdale Recreation Commission volunteer. She is the Marketing Director for the Atlantic Club and Milagro Spa and holds a Bachelors degree in English with a minor in political science. Carly is married to Kevin Immen, Director of Sales for United States Beverage and a United States Marine, and together they are raising three daughters, Charlotte, Mary Cate and Erin.

Jeff Cantor previously announced his candidacy for Monmouth County Sheriff. Cantor is also a licensed Emergency Medical Technician for the Township of Marlboro and has been a member of the Marlboro First Aid Squad since 1996, volunteering countless hours to protect and serve the population of Marlboro as well as the surrounding towns.

Jeff Cantor has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal (2nd award); He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Combat Action Badge and the Basic Parachutist Badge.

Vincent Solomeno announced his candidacy for Monmouth County Surrogate last week. Raised in Union Beach, Solomeno graduated from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) at Sandy Hook before earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Scranton.

In addition to his service on the Hazlet Land Use Board, Vincent Solomeno is a trustee of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association, a member of the American Legion, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), the Netherland-America Foundation, and Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Keyport.

Big Night For Dems In The 11Th Assembly District

The biggest upset of the night came in the 11th Assembly District; Democrats Eric Houghtaling and Joan Downey defeated Republican incumbents Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande.

The 11th District has been a Republican stronghold for a very long time. However, it was only a matter of time, Democrats have been making inroads throughout the district for the past several years. A lot of hard work has been put in over the years laid the ground work and was the difference.

Monmouth County Democrats, Vin Gopal and the candidates Houghtaling and Downey, deserve a lot of credit for unseating Angelini and Casagrande. Their hard work finally paid off!

Monmouth Democrats Received Column "A" For Just 5th Time In Past 36 Years.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
8/10/2015

The Following is a Statement from the Monmouth County Democratic Organization

"Today, the Democratic Party received Column A for just the 5th time in the past 36 years.
As of today, the Republican Party has received Column A in 31 out of the last 36 general elections - which means that the Republican Party has won Column A, 'by chance', roughly 86% of the time.

Our team of attorneys were present today to make sure that the Democratic Process was handled fairly and impartially against incredible statistical odds - odds which a Monmouth University mathematics professor said was 'almost impossible' back in 2012.

We appreciate the cooperation of the County Clerk's office, who also had their County Counsel present, in making sure that the process was conducted impartially and fairly. We are confident that the process this year was fair and impartial."

TODAY IS BALLOT DRAWING FOR NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION

For Immediate Release
August 10, 2015

Republicans have won the first spot roughly 90% of the time. According to the Asbury Park Press in 2012, statisticians say the probability of that happening purely by chance in a random drawing - which is the process required by state law - is less than one in 1.5 million.

FREEHOLD - Today in her capacity as County Clerk, prominent Monmouth County Republican Christine Hanlon will hold a drawing to determine the ballot position for the Democratic and Republican Party candidates in the upcoming November General Elections. This election will be held on November 3rd. Hanlon was Vice Chair of the County Republican Party until her appointment by Government Chris Christie earlier this year. After questions and criticisms about the process were raised in recent years, the Monmouth County Democratic Organization will be keeping a close watch as the positions are drawn.

During the ballot drawing, two capsules are used, one with the Democratic Party name and another with the Republican Party. The names are drawn from a box to determine where the parties will be placed on the ballot. To date, the Monmouth County Republicans have won the coveted first ballot position 31 of the last 35 general elections, roughly 90% of the time.

"We will have attorneys and supporters ready today to inspect the capsules and ensure that the ballot drawing today is fair," said Vin Gopal, Chairman of the Monmouth County Democratic Party. "Questions have been raised about the statistical probability that the same party win first ballot position so many years in a row," Gopal continued. "In the interest of upholding our democratic process, we will be keeping a close watch on the drawing."

In October of 2012, the Asbury Park Press reported on the County's ballot drawing process, noting that "the party has won the draw for the first ballot position in 30 of the last 33 general elections - statistically nearly impossible odds. Statisticians say the probability of that happening purely by chance in a random drawing - which is the process required by state law - is less than one in 1.5 million." The cover page story entitled "Are Monmouth County Republicans Cheating" raised red flags for county residents.

To read the Asbury Park Press Article, please click the following link http://archive.app.com/article/20121007/NJNEWS/310070041/Monmouth%20County%20ballots

"Rumors about questionable tactics have surrounded the ballot process. For instance, apparently refrigerating one of the capsules allows the clerk to choose the colder one and give preference to his or her own party. While it is my sincere hope that our new County Clerk will handle this process with professionalism and integrity, our attorneys will be watching closely - just to be sure."

Gopal indicated that the party will be prepared to file a complaint with the county prosecutors office if any inappropriate activity is suspected. It is imperative that the sanctity of the Democratic process is preserved and protected.

The ballot drawing will take place at 3:00pm at 300 Halls Mill Road in Freehold.
