opal Frustrated with Lack of Movement on Funding Negotiations

Long Branch - After the release of the Prieto-Sweeney funding compromise, no more details have emerged over how districts that received inadequate funding or lost funding will be fixed. Vin Gopal, candidate for State Senate in LD11 expressed his concern:

“I’m frustrated that another day has gone by in Trenton and nothing has been done to address the flaws in the original school funding proposal. Like I said when this proposal was first released, while this plan helps some districts within Monmouth County, others are left struggling and that is completely unacceptable.

“I have made my concerns very clear to Democratic leadership and called on them to do everything they can to minimize the negative impact. Based off of promised state aid numbers, schools in the 11th District have already hired teachers, made significant strategic investments in buses and technology for the upcoming school year, and having to make cuts after their new school year starts on July 1st, puts the education of students at risk."

“Beyond that, we need to continue to focus on a long-term solution like the ones my runningmates, Assemblymembers Downey and Houghtaling have supported, that fully funds our schools. Every student needs to get their fair share, and even after the Preto-Sweeney compromise, we are far from that.”

Monmouth County Chairman, Vin Gopal To Step Down Tomorrow To Challenge Beck For LD 11 Seat

Monmouth County Chairman, Vin Gopal, announced in an email last night that he was stepping down as County Chair in order to challenge incumbent Monmouth County State Senator Jennifer Beck for her seat in LD 11. Word of Gopal's possible intention to challenge Beck was first reported by Observer.com yesterday. The Asbury Park Press is reporting this story today.

Gopal made it official last night with an email blast to county committee members last night:

Dear Monmouth County Democrats,

For the past 4 and ½ years, I have have had the honor of volunteering as your Monmouth County Democratic Party Chairman. I have enjoyed every day of my service to this Party. Together we have created an eminent force against the Republicans as we defeated them year after year in historically Republican municipalities and Legislative Districts.

As your Chairman, my proudest achievement has been growing this party while defeating Republicans across the County. In the past 4 and ½ years, together we have achieved the below successes…

- Built a strong county committee and aggressive local donor fundraising program with a full-time staff to serve the Monmouth County Democrats.

- The election of the first Democrats since 1989 to be elected in the 11th Legislative District - Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey, to breakup the all Republican Legislative body.

I have decided to enter the race for State Senate in New Jersey’s 11th Legislative District. I do not believe that candidates or elected officials should serve as the county party chair - I believe in transparency and integrity in government and I do not believe that party leaders should be candidates for public office. In my 4 and ½ years volunteering as County Chairman, I have given thousands of hours towards the Democratic Party. I have loved every minute of it. I wish Vin well on this endeavor. Defeating Jennifer Beck won't be easy but if it's to happen, 2017 is the year. In a gubernatorial election year with anti-Republican/Chris Christie sentiment running high, Democrats have a real chance to take the 11th LD after last year's success of Houghtaling and Downey's assembly victories.

Rep. Frank Pallone Not Satisfied With Sandy Response and Recovery Effort

The Jersey Shore is open for business, but for homeowners and many small businesses, there is still a long way to go to recovery. In case you missed it, Congressman Frank Pallone along with Asbury Park's Langosta Lounge owner Marilyn Schlossbach were interviewed today on MSNBC's Jansing & Co.

Besides being a restaurateur, Schlossbach had a brief political career of her own. Back in 2011 she was the running mate of Monmouth County Chairman Vin Gopal when they were running for State Assembly in 11th Legislative District. . Schlossbach had to drop out of the race in September of that year due to damage sustained by a number of her other restaurants as a result of Hurricane Irene. She was replaced on the ticket by Red Bank councilwoman Kathy Horgan.

Three Red Bank Candidates File Ballot Petitions Zipprich, Lee and Horgan will appear in Democratic Column

Democratic candidates from Red Bank will be running together again after yesterday’s Election filing deadline.

The Red Bank Democratic Organization announced that petitions were filed with the Division of Elections in Trenton by Councilman Ed Zipprich to seek an Assembly seat in the 11th Legislative District and by Councilwomen Sharon Lee and Kathy Horgan for re-election to the Borough council.

Councilman Zipprich received his party’s nomination at the Monmouth County Democratic convention in late February. Councilwomen Lee and Horgan received their nominations at the Red Bank Democratic nominating convention last month.

Councilwoman Sharon Lee of East Westside Avenue is seeking her fourth term on the governing body and Councilwoman Kathleen Horgan of Branch Avenue is seeking her third term.

Lee states that “running again with Councilwoman Horgan reinforces my lifelong commitment to serving Red Bank. We are working together with our Council colleagues for the betterment of our town.” Horgan says “I am excited to campaign again with Sharon. Our community has recognized our hard work in trying economic times and realizes that Red Bank continues to prosper under Democratic leadership.”

Zipprich of River Road is running with Neptune Township Committeemen Kevin McMillan for the General Assembly seat and Dr. Michael “Doc” Brantley for Senate.

“It is exciting to again be running with Sharon and Kathy on the same ballot” said Zipprich “and Kevin and Doc bring similar strengths to the ticket, making our entire team more committed to revitalizing our economy and doing the hard work for our constituents, many of whom are still recovering from Sandy in the district’s area.”

Lee, Horgan and Zipprich first ran together for Council in 2007. McMillan and Brantley are both former Mayors of Neptune Township.

All of these candidates will appear on the June 4th Primary Election ballot along with other Monmouth County Democrats seeking election as Freeholder and Sheriff.

Clean sweep for Republicans in Legislative and County Races in Monmouth

Besides being an other tough election night in Middletown it was also a tough night for Democratic candidates that were running in the 11th, 12th and 13th Legislative Districts as well as Monmouth County.

The Teams of Santiago, Gopal & Horigan (11th), Brown, Spedding & Rome (12th) and Cullen, Lavan & Short(13th), Morlino, Klienhendler & O'Rourke (30th) as well as, Monmouth County Freeholder Amy Mallet, her running mate Bill Shea and Surrogate candidate Michael Steinhorn all lost their respective races.

The big upsets out of this bunch needless to say, are the losses of Amy Mallet and Vin Gopal who both gained the endorsements of the Asbury Park Press.

Mallet presence on the Board of Chosen Freeholders will be missed. She was responsible for spear heading the effort to create the County's Department of Veterans Affairs (at no cost to tax payers), the County's solar initiative and was a leading voice for the ouster of the Brookdale trustees who where responsible for giving such lavish perks and contract to former Brookdale President Peter Burnham. Mallet was also an advocate for term limits for appointees of various boards and commissions through out the County so that abuses like the one discovered at Brookdale would not be repeated elsewhere.

After picking up the endorsement of the Asbury Park Press expectations skyrocketed for Vin Gopal to wrestle 1 of the 2 available Assembly seats away from the incumbent Republicans. The Republicans thought that Gopal's election to the Assembly was such a strong possibility, they resorted to an all out personal attack on him by sending out inflammatory and totally misleading campaign material about him that both the Newark Star Ledger and the Asbury Park Press condemned as dirty and false.

Star Ledger's Truth-o-Meter Says GOP Attack Ad Against Gopal In Assembly District 11 Race = Pants On Fire !

The Star Ledger broke out the Politifacts Truth-o-Meter and has chimed in on the controversial GOP attack ad against 11th District Assembly candidate Vin Gopal.

Politifacts has determined that the attack ad sent to thousands of residents in the the 11th district is a clear case of Pants-on-Fire deceit and called this dirty tactic to discredit their opponent "utter filth"

Here is what they had to say:


Dirty politics is nothing new in the art of campaigning, especially in the final days running up to an election.

But sometimes, those dirty tactics reach the point of utter filth.

Take the case of an attack ad by the New Jersey Republican State Committee against 11th District Assembly candidate Vin Gopal. Democrats Gopal and Kathleen Horgan are challenging Republican incumbents Caroline Casagrande and Mary Pat Angelini for the seats to represent parts of Monmouth County.

"Corrupt Political Bosses. Money Laundering. Fraud. It’s Just Another Day At The Office For Vin Gopal," reads a campaign mailer circulating in the district.

The ad shows a $100 bill hanging from a clothesline and features Star-Ledger headlines from articles about former Assemblyman Joseph Vas, who was sentenced to 6 ½ years in prison for stealing affordable housing funds when he was Perth Amboy’s mayor and for committing federal election fraud. From February to June 2006 -- when he was a 20-year-old political science student -- Gopal was a campaign manager for Vas during his primary campaign for congress. The ad also shows a washing machine with money inside and a statement below it that reads "To you, this might look like someone illegally laundering money … To Vin Gopal, it looks like Pay Day!"

The ad seems to imply that Gopal had a connection to Vas and his criminal activities, but does not accuse Gopal of any criminal act.

PolitiFact New Jersey found that readers of the ad could infer improprieties by Gopal, but there’s no proof that he did anything wrong.

One of the article headlines shown in the ad reads "Aide to former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas pleads guilty to money laundering."

Gopal, a Long Branch resident and business owner, said what bothers him most about the ad "is the implying and lying that I was that aide."

We pulled the Star-Ledger article and found that the aide in question was Raymond Geneske, who was a campaign adviser to Vas. Geneske was sentenced in January to two years of probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine for participating in a scheme to funnel contributions to Vas’s congressional campaign. Gopal, who told us that he was never contacted by any law enforcement agency or official about Vas, is not mentioned in the article.

We checked further by running Gopal’s name through the Public Access to Court Electronic Records database covering federal courts and bankruptcies and found that he was never charged with a crime. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said it had never heard of Gopal and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office confirmed that Gopal had no connection to the Vas case.

"The (Republican) State Committee is not suggesting Mr. Gopal committed a crime," Communications Director Rick Gorka said in an email. "Rather, it is suggesting that he had a front row seat for the corruption that plagues New Jersey's political process. The fact is, Mr. Gopal, a career political operative, was the campaign manager of Vas for Congress, a campaign of a sitting State Legislator who was at the center of federal and state corruption investigations and charges. He was paid from Joe Vas’s campaign account.

"Indeed, as the campaign manager he was presumably responsible for expenditures from that account," Gorka continued. "If he didn't know where the money was coming from, he should have. In the past he has been proud of his association with that campaign, touting it in his bio when he was deputy campaign manager for the short-live Kucinich for President Campaign. Now he's seeking to run away from it. The State Committee thinks the voters have a right to know about Vin Gopal's connections to those sordid events."

A "career political operative?"

Gopal, 26, became involved with the Vas campaign when he was a 20-year-old student at Pennsylvania State University majoring in political science and wanted to work on a campaign for class credit and to gain experience in politics. Gopal told us he applied to 20 campaigns and eventually went to work as a campaign manager for the Vas campaign. He had also worked on other campaigns. Vlad Gutman, campaign manager for the District 11 Democrats, said that although Gopal had the title of campaign manager with Vas, he managed no personnel and "was the most junior position" on staff.

"I would talk to the press briefly about events he (Vas) would do in a day, set up phones, work with volunteers, handle scheduling," Gopal said of his responsibilities. "I never had anything to do with money, never saw money, never was at any fundraisers."

Gopal said he learned about the case against Vas when he saw a newspaper article about it two years after leaving the campaign, and attributes the current spate of attack ads to what he called "desperation."

"The things they’re doing are borderline slanderous," Gopal said. "It’s unethical. They’re lying and misleading the public in every way possible to hide their failed actions in this district."

Our ruling

The Republican state committee distributed an ad in the 11th Assembly District that links Gopal to Vas, a disgraced politician convicted of election fraud and other offenses. Gopal worked four months on Vas’ unsuccessful congressional campaign. Gopal dealt with scheduling, phone banks, volunteers and occasional media queries. Given that law enforcement and a public database all confirm that Gopal had no connection of any kind to the Vas criminal case, the implications made by the ad aren’t just ridiculous, they’re also outrageous. Some laundering is definitely needed because this claim is Pants on Fire!

11th District Assembly Candidate Vin Gopal, Speaks Out Against "Ugly" And Slanderous Campaign Mailer From Angelini Camp

11th District Assembly Candidate Vin Gopal, issued the an email (printed below) to friends and supporters this morning denouncing the ugly and unsubstantiated claims of his Republican opponent Mary Pat Angelini.

The Angelini campaign sent out an inflammatory and inaccurate campaign flyer to constituents after Gopal won the endorsement of the Asbury Park Press. The questionable campaign mailer insinuated that Gopal had been involved in money laundering and other corrupt activities while earning college credits, working as an intern, for former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas, who pleaded guilty to and was convicted of numerous campaign fraud charges and lying to federal investigators.

To claim that a 20 year old college student, working on a campaign as an intern to earn credits towards graduation, is somehow tainted and corrupt himself is a new low and shows how desperate some are to hold onto power.

In this campaign I’ve only talked about real issues, not personal attacks. When I talk to voters, have interviews with members of the press, send out material I talk about my ideas for New Jersey and what’s happened to us these last four years. What happened is the largest property tax increase since 2007, as high as 23.5% in some parts of the state. What happened is an unemployment rate that exceeds Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut. What happened is schools forced to end arts and foreign language programs while charging fees for extracurricular activities.

But my opponents are running an ugly campaign. They’re accusing me of being a party boss, of laundering money, of deep political corruption…for a job I had for college credit when I was 20 years old. That’s a desperate tactic—the incumbents are spending tens of thousands of special interest dollars trying to ruin me because they know that Monmouth County voters are ready for a real change.

I’m not upset that they’re attacking me. They wouldn’t be doing it if they weren’t worried. But this proves what I’ve been saying all along. My opponents are a part of a Trenton system more committed to reelection than protecting middle class families. They’re willing to poison the dialogue and destroy reputations if that means that they can hold on to their cushy jobs, funded by lobbyists and PACs who are interested only in their bottom line.

We need new people in Trenton. People like my running mates and I who are committed to incentivizing small businesses and restoring property tax rebates. Our campaign isn’t built on special interests, so we have no favors to pay back. We’re committed to the middle class because we are a part of it. That’s why our priorities will never change—because the policies that hurt regular people will injure us as well.

Can you help me push back against my opponents’ slander? Can you forward this email to every voter you know? We have just seven day left to get the word out that for the first time in a long time Monmouth County voters have the opportunity choose leaders committed to them.

APP Endorses Gopal For Assembly While Backing GOP Incumbents

This past Thursday the Asbury Park Press's Editorial Board came out with its endorsements for the new 11th Legislative District, in so doing the board once again has recommend that voters split their votes in the district, which leaves some to scratch their heads.

After reeling against incumbents all year long in their editorials, the APP has chosen to endorse two of them in Jen Beck and Caroline Casagrande, both Republicans that have shown that they will do or say anything to get reelected. They have both flipped-flopped on many issues that directly relate to their new district this year, gay marriage, women's health care issues and the funding of Planned Parenthood, just to name a few. It seems as though the only reason why the APP has chosen to endorse these two is because they seem to "tow the party line" on most, if not all the other issues that don't seem to have a direct impact on their reelection bids.

On the flip side of these endorsements the APP has decided to endorse Democrat Vin Gopal for one of the other Assembly seats up for grabs over Casagrande's running mate, Mary Pat Angelini.

In it's endorsement the APP had this to say about Gopal, "... we believe Gopal, who owns several small businesses including a group of community newspapers, would offer a fresh, perceptive set of eyes on the continuing set of problems plaguing New Jersey. In addition, he seems to be a candidate willing to compromise in order to get much-needed work done...."

Gopal, who was born in Neptune and grew up in Freehold currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce and was elected to a three year term as President of the Hazlet Business Owners Association in January of 2010. Vin Gopal also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Monmouth County where he is a member of their Finance Committee. Gopal also serves on the Advisory Board of New Leaders Council – New Jersey, is clearly the right choice for the State Assembly in the 11th district.

The same can't be said for Beck who is running against Ray Santiago in the for the open State Senate seat. She received a number of negative reader comments left by posters on the APP website.

It seems the APP glossed over Jennifer Beck's record. She IS NOT an ally of Chris Christie (have you seen the governor endorse her?). Beck attempted to override Christie's defunding of Planned Parenthood--the largest provider of abortions. She was one of two Republicans that attempted that ghastly deed. Thank god Chris Christie prevailed on that issue.

Jennifer Beck also received campaign contributions from Solomon Dwek. When it was exposed, Beck claims she "donated" it to charity; however, she refuses to be transparent and show proof of such donation. Isn't she the one that wants others to be transparent??

She is now for gay marriage. In her old district, she was against it. Gee, you think the large population of gay and lesbians in her new district had something to do with her flip-flopping??

Beck is nothing more than a shill for her special interest contributors. When the Freehold Regional district wash awash with the Call me Doctor Wasser issue, she refused to get involved. That is up until it became the story of the year in the APP. Only then did she say a single word. Beck had the opportunity to go to bat for all the school districts that feed the regional but chose to only speak up for the regional who was fronted by one of her major contributors.

Are you kidding me?? Beck received money from Solomon Dwek??? What was she supposed to do..do what the other politicians did--vote for something and get something in return???

I read that "Dump Beck Site" I just can't believe her driver's license got suspended so many times. What a hypocrite, she likes to make laws, but not obey them.

It seems the people in Tinton Falls are angry with her for the same reason the people in the Freehold Regional HS District are angry--she did not go to an important Board meeting regarding the Fort Monmouth (non-military) kids going to their schools and costing them a huge amount. They reside within the jurisdiction of Colts Neck--why haven't they accepted them??? Where is Casagrande on this???

I can't believe they were endorsed by the APP---It is indeed time for a change!!!

Red Bank Councilwoman Kathy Horgan Will Be Nominated To Fill 11th District Vacancy

Monmouth County Democrats will nominate Red Bank Councilwoman Kathy Horgan tonight for State Assembly in the 11th District. Horgan will run with businessman Vin Gopal of Long Branch for Assembly and former prosecutor Ray Santiago of Freehold for State Senate.

Horgan, who has served one term on the borough council, works for a nonprofit organization which is dedicated to AIDS research. Horgan will replace Asbury Park restauranter Marilyn Schlossbach, who stepped down last week due to her restaurants getting hit hard due to Hurricane Irene.

Senator Jennifer Beck has flip flopped on marriage equality and women's healthcare due to politics. However, when it comes to protecting the streets of Asbury Park, Long Branch, Red Bank and the 11th District - She is siding with Governor Christie's drastic cuts.

Unless your name is Whelan, Gordon, Polistina or Driscoll, most insiders see the post-redistricting legislative election year landscape as a bore snore: 37 or 38 Senate cocoons all but perfectly preserved against an opposing party onslaught.

But Democrats want to soften up their rivals where they can, and in light of the public safety argument, in particular, some of them see at least the shades of an opportunity in the newly formed LD11, where state Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-11) seeks re-election.

"They think they have an opportunity to play there," Patrick Murray, pollster and political scientist for Monmouth University, told PolitickerNJ.com.

Beck broke with Republicans Monday to vote in favor of restoring $7.5 million for women's healthcare, signaling to Democrats that the incumbent is serious about a challenge from Freehold attorney Ray Santiago.

Today, state Sen. Paul Sarlo, (D-36), zeroed in on Beck as he tried to get her to consider backing restoring a line item of $50 million for public safety, a doomed proposition along with the other Christie cuts to the Democratic budget.

"I can only look at the budget as a whole," Beck told Sarlo.

Democrats hope Beck's reconfigured district, which now includes urban municipalities Long Branch and Asbury Park, will present outrage opportunities for the challenger as they try to sink Beck by tying her to Christie.

Two inside sources told PolitickerNJ.com that while they doubt they can topple Beck, Assembly Democrats want to try to get into a dogfight with the GOP in the 11th to pick off Beck's running mate, Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande of Colts Neck

The following is a statement issues by 11th District Democratic Senate Candidate Ray Santiago in response to a July 3rd Courier Post news report that incumbent Senator Jennifer Beck will flip her position on marriage equality:

"News this weekend that Senator Beck will now support marriage equality after voting against it when all of New Jersey was watching is not shocking to anyone who has followed Beck's career as a professional politician. She now faces a district which includes Asbury Park, Ocean Grove & other LGBT friendly areas - a new district which has 10,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans - therefore, it should come as no surprise that Senator Beck is flipping her position only due to politics.

The reality is that New Jersey taxpayers are tired of hypocritical, professional politicians who change their positions based on the political climate. Republicans, Democrats and all New Jerseyians should be tired of politicians who play the public. It is not like the Senator opposed marriage equality because it is in her belief system, it was simply due to the politics of a new district.This is an issue of human rights and Senator Beck plays politics - She voted against marriage equality not once, but twice - once in the judiciary committee and a second time on the floor of the senate and now because of a new district, she claims she supports it.

Santiago convinced he has a shot in newly configured LD 11

Still reeling from Gov. Chris Christie's 2009 cannonball that undid their meticulously constructed designs for county control, Monmouth County Democrats are trying to re-inflate enthusiasm around the candidacies of Freeholder Amy Mallet and an 11th District legislative slate that benefits from redistricting.

At the the top of the ticket for the Democrats as they try to unseat state Sen. Jennifer Beck, (R-12), of Red Bank stands Ray Santiago of Freehold Township, a Puerto Rican born success story who grew up in Brooklyn and hung up the law shingle in lush Monmouth County about ten years.

Coming off back to back losses at the local level and deprived of the two years of fundraising he says he, of course, would have preferred, he took the short runway shot at a Senate candidacy based on redistricting and his belief that the district is winnable. Registration in a district composed in part of old 11th District towns, including Asbury Park and Long Branch, favors Democrats: 36,643 to 26,405 Republicans with an additional 68,899 undecided voters, but again, the overall trend lines in Monmouth have been steadily Republican in the Christie era.

Santiago plans to run against Beck in part on a platform of wanting to improve the schools funding formula in order to exert fairness for Monmouth County towns. Part of his argument for election includes the pitch that he will be more independent than Republicans forced into line by the animated Christie.

"I'm not a fan of Governor Christie's," Santiago told PolitickerNJ.com. "I don't like the mannerism in which he makes his case. It's my way or the highway. Moreover, all of his talk of cuts simply forces the towns to raise taxes at the local level."

As for Beck, "What positive things has she done?" Santiago wanted to know.

Challenged to explain how he thinks another lawyer in Trenton can make the case to regular voters that he would effectively answer their constituent needs, Santiago said, "As an attorney, I have first-hand knowledge of how these laws impact people. Who better to draft and create legislation? I would say this, too, importantly, my sense of the law - my sense of my profession - is that it is the service of human need. The way I approach the law, it is in service of the disadvantaged."
