Politician Inappropriately uses Veteran’s Initiative to Promote his Political Campaign
Golden has never served in the military
HAZLET - Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden is facing steep criticism from veterans after using a Veteran focused social media initiative to promote his political campaign for re-election. Golden has never served in the military in any capacity.

During a day of political campaigning, signs labeled #OnDutyForSheriffGolden were passed out to fellow politicos, including Golden himself. The group posed on numerous occasions and spread the photos throughout social media, a clear attempt to grasp on to the support for the veteran focused initiative for political gain. Because of the political maneuver, Golden was met with heavy criticism by local veterans for his willingness to abuse the veteran focused initiative for personal and political gain.
In 2014, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, began a social media initiative for veterans using the title #OnDutyForJoni. Supporters would pose for photos on their social media webpages using the title #OnDutyForJoni as a call for support of Ernst and other veterans serving at home and overseas.
Golden is facing the most competitive challenge to his re-election he has seen in the near decade he has spent in the Sheriff’s Office. His opponent, U.S. Army Colonel Jeff Cantor joined fellow candidate U.S. Army Captain Vincent Solomeno in the veterans focused social media initiative by having their supporters pose online while they served overseas this year.
“I know political campaigns get dirty, but this is beyond the pale. How can we trust a sheriff to protect us who is willing to do whatever it takes to score political points, even if it means co-opting a veterans’ initiative for his own gain? That’s why I’ve laid out a plan to help bolster the resources needed to protect against these types of attacks, including creating an anti-terrorism force that will identify and reinforce soft targets such as boardwalks, malls, and other densely populated areas. Democrats Endorsed by VoteVets in Monmouth County Races

HAZLET – With a Veteran heavy ticket, the Monmouth County Democrats’ campaign received a big boost from VoteVets.org, a political action committee, endorsed the U.S. Army veterans Colonel Jeff Cantor, Captain Vincent Solomeno, and Former Captain Sue Fulton.

A Captain in the New Jersey Army National Guard, Fulbright Scholar, and member of the Hazlet Township Land Use Board, Solomeno, 31, is running for Monmouth County Surrogate. A platoon trainer, he is tasked this month with mentoring future officers at phase one of the Army National Guard’s Officer Candidate School. Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik attested to Solomeno’s commitment to his community, “As an Army officer, Vincent deployed overseas to protect our country and he did the same thing here at home during and after Superstorm Sandy. He will make an excellent Monmouth County Surrogate who protects not only veterans but all residents.”
A graduate of West Point Class of 1980, the first class to accept women, a Presidential Appointee and Chair of the prestigious West Point Board of Visitors, and Former Captain in the U.S. Army, Fulton is one of the candidates for Monmouth County Freeholder. In response to her endorsement, Fulton said “The Army taught me that there is no leadership without selfless service. My mission now is to serve the people of Monmouth County, to the best of my ability. I’m so grateful to VoteVets for supporting me, and Jeff and Vincent." Fulton was a leading force for LGBTQ rights, working to end the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” ban and advocating for transgender service in the military. Recently, Fulton was invited to attend the Commander in Chief Forum that aired on NBC, where she was able to question the republican nominee on the status of undocumented immigrants in the military. Cantor will be in command of approximately 1,900 soldiers from ten different nations. His mission is to teach emergency management, disaster response, and counter-terror operations to the allied nation’s military forces.
“When the country calls, I drop everything to fulfill our nation’s request. I am proud to do so,” said Colonel Cantor. He will be away for the next 3 weeks. While he is gone his team will sponsor a program called #OnDutyForJeff, asking people to campaign for him while he is overseas.
Cantor is a formidable opponent to his incumbent rival. His invaluable military experience has prepared him for the difficult tasks he could face as the next Monmouth County Sheriff. In 2011, Cantor started the Marlboro Sunshine Fund, benefiting local veterans.. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, he raised over $100,000 for veterans and their families.
The colonel enlisted in the Army in 1985 as a Private First Class, after which he became commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Infantry. Cantor holds four military occupational specialties in Infantry, All-Source Intelligence, Imagery Intelligence, and Civil Affairs. He served in various units both in active duty and in the Army Reserves. He currently holds the rank of Colonel (0-6) in the Army Reserve.
As sitting Marlboro Councilman and liaison to the Marlboro police department, Cantor has been at the forefront on improving public safety in town, while increasing resources available to police department. He was instrumental in getting the Certified Emergency Response Team started in town and has worked closely with first responders. As the current heroin epidemic paralyzes our communities, Cantor’s time as an EMT provides him with the insight and know-how to confront this issue head on.

Monmouth County Dem Candidates Report Over 255K Raised at Primary Campaign Deadline

HAZLET – The Monmouth County Democratic campaigns for Sheriff, Surrogate and Freeholder today announced that they raised over $255,000 ($255,210.18) in their Primary campaign fundraising report. The team continues to boast overwhelming grassroots support throughout the county with almost 82% of the over 800 total contributions from supporters reported coming in at $300 or less, almost 63% of total contributions reported at $200 or less and almost 47% of the total contributions reported coming in for $100 or less.
The overwhelming financial support being offered from people throughout Monmouth County represents just some of the feedback for candidate for Sheriff Jeff Cantor, candidate for Surrogate Vincent Solomeno, and candidates for Freeholder Matt Doherty and Sue Fulton have received as they travel throughout the county highlighting the team’s record of service in our communities. They have also heard the frustrations of middle class taxpayers on the receiving end of skyrocketing taxes as a result of Republican County Chairman and incumbent Sheriff Shaun Golden’s control over every office in county government.
Most recently, people across the county have expressed their frustration with Chairman Golden and the Monmouth County Republican Committee’s refusal to condemn presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump for his claim weeks ago that women seeking abortions should be “punished”, his continued defense of Trump University amidst allegations of fraud and “elder abuse”, his repeated calls for a wall to be built to discriminate against people and his efforts to advance the conspiracy theory that President Obama supports ISIS.
While Sheriff Golden and his running mates have remained silent when asked by reporters to endorse or denounce Trump’s candidacy for fear of alienating those they were elected to represent, their support for his candidacy was made clear when they began advertising Trump signs on the Monmouth County Republican Committee website ((http://monmouthrepublican.org/lawnsign/).

Solomeno is a Captain in the New Jersey Army National Guard. He has served as an Engineer platoon leader, logistics manager, rear detachment commander, and public affairs officer. From 2010 - 2014, Solomeno was the full time Command Historian of the New Jersey National Guard. He returned in September 2015 from an overseas deployment to Central and Southwest Asia. A recipient of the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, he was called to active duty during and after Superstorm Sandy, working in devastated communities across Monmouth County.
Freeholder candidate Matt Doherty has been Mayor of Belmar since January, 2011 and previously served as a Councilman in town starting in 2007. Since becoming Mayor, Belmar residents have yet to see a tax increase on the municipal level under Mayor Doherty’s leadership.
Doherty also led Belmar through the devastating impacts of Superstorm Sandy, working to provide food, shelter and clothing to affected residents in the aftermath of the storm. He then began immediately working with local, county, state and federal officials to rebuild and improve Belmar. Doherty worked tirelessly to successfully fulfill his pledge to get every family in town impacted by Superstorm Sandy back in their homes. A Financial Advisor, Mayor Doherty graduated Georgetown University with a BA in government in 1995 and went on to earn his Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University in 1997. He and his wife, Maggie, are raising their three children, Hannah, Claire and Séamus, in Belmar.
Freeholder candidate Sue Fulton is a 1980 West Point graduate, part of the first class to admit women. She served as a platoon leader and company commander in Germany, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Army Captain. She helped found several military organizations, including Knights Out and OutServe, working on the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell.” Since leaving the military, she has managed businesses at companies like Procter & Gamble and Merck for over 20 years. In 2011, President Obama appointed Fulton to the West Point Board of Visitors, and she currently serves as Chair.
Sue and her partner of 20 years, Penny Gnesin, currently live in Asbury Park and were the first same-sex couple to marry at the Cadet Chapel at West Point.

CANTOR: GOLDEN’S TRUMP SILENCE ONCE AGAIN HIGHLIGHTS HIS CONFLICTS

HAZLET- On the heels of Donald Trump’s victory in the New York Republican Presidential Primary, Monmouth County Democratic candidate for Sheriff, Jeff Cantor, today questioned why Monmouth County Sheriff and County Republican Party Boss, Shaun Golden is refusing to let people know whether he stands in support of Trump for President. Trump has already been endorsed by the head of the New Jersey Republican Party, Chris Christie, as well as by Golden’s fellow Party Boss, Ocean County’s George Gilmore.
With New Jersey’s June 7th Primary date looming and the Republican nominee for President far from decided, Trump’s many controversial positions have forced Golden’s position as Republican Party Boss to again come into sharper focus in conjunction with his position as the County’s highest ranking law enforcement official. This is just the latest conflict of interest brought on by Golden’s positions as both County Republican Party Chairman and County Sheriff.
“Donald Trump has advocated for advanced torture methods, called for a wall to be built to discriminate against people and even said at one point that women seeking abortions should ‘be punished,’” said Cantor. “Donald Trump’s hateful, bigoted positions have been very clear from the outset of his campaign for President and it is well past time for Shaun Golden to work through his conflicted interests as Party Boss and County Sheriff and let us all know whether the Monmouth County Sheriff believes Donald Trump should be our next President. The fact is that in his ‘day job’ as County Sheriff, Shaun Golden is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure and safety for over 600,000 Monmouth County residents, so his party politics are not my concern.”
This conflict has long been an issue, even within Golden’s own party, as evidenced by statements made during Golden's recent run for Republican Party Chairman by former Monmouth County Prosecutor and President of the Monmouth County Affiliated Republican Club, John Kaye, former Monmouth County Republican Chairman Fredrick Niemann as well as Manalapan Township Republican County Chairman Steve McEnery and Freehold Township Republican County Committee Chairman Anthony Graziano.
Former County Prosecutor Kaye said that holding both the Chairman and Sheriff’s positions: “ . . . would immediately create conflicts for our Freeholders and vulnerabilities for our candidates that put everyone at risk . . . This is because the Sheriff’s office is part of the county government and subject to the Board of Freeholder’s review for funding. “
Former Chairman Niemann wrote: “You are either an elected official or a party leader. You can’t do both. To do both is an inherent conflict of interest.”
At the same time, McEnery and Graziano cited numerous potential ethical conflicts in Golden serving as Party Boss and Sheriff and they wrote: “ . . . he will, among other things, be seeking approval for various necessities tied to the County’s largest Department, including its budget, from the very same people who will be looking to him for support, endorsement, and financing during election cycles.”

HAZLET- Following Republican Presidential front runner Donald Trump's repeated calls to reinstitute waterboarding as a means of interrogation and for torture methods that would go further, Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal and Monmouth County Democratic candidate for Sheriff Jeff Cantor, a 30 year military veteran, released the following statement asking Monmouth County Republican Chairman and County Sheriff Shaun Golden if he supports Trump for President.
" Like millions across the world, we were appalled to see the most recent atrocities carried out by those that would seek to plunge our world into chaos and violence. Also, like many, we want to see everyone involved brought to justice so that they may be punished and so they may shed light on any other potential plots against humanity. However, in a civilized society, torture can never be the answer. The fact that the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for President, Donald Trump, proudly stands in favor of torturing suspects is truly disturbing. While it may be a bit unorthodox for both the Democratic Chairman and the Democratic candidate for Sheriff to both call on Shaun Golden to say whether he endorses Donald Trump for President, it is entirely appropriate in this case given the fact that Golden serves two very important and influential roles in Monmouth County.
Serving as Monmouth County Sheriff, Shaun Golden is the top law enforcement official in Monmouth County, and county residents deserve to know if he stands in support of someone who strongly and proudly advocates in favor of torture. As the Monmouth County Republican Chairman, Shaun Golden most certainly needs to take into consideration the fact that the head of the Republican Party in New Jersey, Chris Christie, has been among Donald Trump's most outspoken supporters. While these two positions may be at odds, it is time for Shaun Golden to let everyone know if he stands in support of Donald Trump. We would appreciate the Chairman's answer before his hand-picked Freeholder candidates pass the budget for his Sheriff's Department tonight."

Doherty and Immen join Sheriff candidate Jeff Cantor and Surrogate candidate Vincent Solomeno as prospective candidates on the Democratic slate for Countywide office in November.
“We believe in putting people before politics,” said Mayor Doherty. “It’s that belief that has allowed us to attract great new businesses to Belmar that put people to work, help keep taxes down and provide tremendous destinations for residents and visitors alike. We have had no tax increases in Belmar in five years, while just last year the County freeholders raised property taxes millions of dollars on middle class families. That is simply unacceptable.”
“I’m not running for a cause or to protest something,” continued Doherty. “I’m running because it is becoming almost impossible to raise a family in Monmouth County with the skyrocketing county taxes. I’m running to help attract more businesses countywide and I’m running because more needs to be done to get Sandy impacted families countywide back in their homes. And our team is running to win.”
Matt Doherty has been Mayor of Belmar since January, 2011 and previously served as a Councilman in town starting in 2007. Since becoming Mayor, Belmar residents have yet to see a tax increase on the municipal level. He is a Financial Advisor for Metlife Premier client group of New Jersey in Wall. Mayor Doherty graduated Georgetown University with a BA in government in 1995 and went on to earn his Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University in 1997. He and his wife, Maggie, are raising their three children, Hannah, Claire and Séamus, in Belmar.
“County property taxes have continued to rise because Monmouth County government has had no checks and balances of late,” said Carly Immen. “Instead of running government the same way you would run your household or business finances the Freeholder Board has become a solely partisan operation consistently draining money from the pockets of middle class taxpayers. My husband and I are raising our family here in Monmouth County and there is nothing more important to me than ensuring that we get things back on track and moving in the right direction, and I believe that public service is the most direct route towards achieving that goal.”
Carly Immen proudly served as a member of the Farmingdale Borough Council and successfully formed a self-supporting Recreation Commission to bring community events and programs to residents of all ages, a first for Farmingdale. She also led the effort to build and install a Little Free Library in town and is currently active in the Farmingdale School PTA and as a Farmingdale Recreation Commission volunteer. She is the Marketing Director for the Atlantic Club and Milagro Spa and holds a Bachelors degree in English with a minor in political science. Carly is married to Kevin Immen, Director of Sales for United States Beverage and a United States Marine, and together they are raising three daughters, Charlotte, Mary Cate and Erin.

Vincent Solomeno announced his candidacy for Monmouth County Surrogate last week. Raised in Union Beach, Solomeno graduated from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) at Sandy Hook before earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Scranton. He is the recipient of the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship and J. William Fulbright Scholarship. As a Fulbright Scholar, he received a Master of Arts from the University of Amsterdam for his study of the roots of radicalization in Muslim and non-Muslim communities in the Netherlands.
Solomeno is a Captain in the New Jersey Army National Guard. He has served as an Engineer platoon leader, logistics manager, rear detachment commander, and public affairs officer. From 2010 - 2014, Solomeno was the full time Command Historian of the New Jersey National Guard. He returned in September 2015 from an overseas deployment to Central and Southwest Asia. A recipient of the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, he was called to active duty during and after Superstorm Sandy, working in devastated communities across Monmouth County.
In addition to his service on the Hazlet Land Use Board, Vincent Solomeno is a trustee of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association, a member of the American Legion, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), the Netherland-America Foundation, and Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Keyport.
