The Democratic Party’s Anti-Bernie Elites Have a Huge Stake in Blaming Russia

I don't necessarily believe the entire premise of this article but there are many bitter Democrats that do.

Common Dreams
by Norman Solomon

After Hillary Clinton’s devastating loss nearly six months ago, her most powerful Democratic allies feared losing control of the party. Efforts to lip-synch economic populism while remaining closely tied to Wall Street had led to a catastrophic defeat. In the aftermath, the party’s progressive base—personified by Bernie Sanders—was in position to start flipping over the corporate game board.

Aligned with Clinton, the elites of the Democratic Party needed to change the subject. Clear assessments of the national ticket’s failures were hazardous to the status quo within the party. So were the groundswells of opposition to unfair economic privilege. So were the grassroots pressures for the party to become a genuine force for challenging big banks, Wall Street and overall corporate power.

In short, the Democratic Party’s anti-Bernie establishment needed to reframe the discourse in a hurry. And—in tandem with mass media—it did.

The reframing could be summed up in two words: Blame Russia.

By early winter, the public discourse was going sideways—much to the benefit of party elites. The meme of blaming Russia and Vladimir Putin for the election of Donald Trump effectively functioned to let the Wall Street-friendly leadership of the national Democratic Party off the hook. Meanwhile, serious attempts to focus on the ways that wounds to democracy in the United States have been self-inflicted—whether via the campaign finance system or the purging of minorities from voter rolls or any number of other systemic injustices—were largely set aside.

"Rather than just calling for what’s needed—a truly independent investigation into allegations that the Russian government interfered with the U.S. election—the party line became hyperbolic and unmoored from the available evidence."
Fading from scrutiny was the establishment that continued to dominate the Democratic Party’s superstructure. At the same time, its devotion to economic elites was undiminished. As Bernie told a reporter on the last day of February: “Certainly there are some people in the Democratic Party who want to maintain the status quo. They would rather go down with the Titanic so long as they have first-class seats.”

Amid great luxury and looming catastrophe, the party’s current hierarchy has invested enormous political capital in depicting Vladimir Putin as an unmitigated arch villain. Relevant history was irrelevant, to be ignored or denied.

With dutiful conformity from most Democrats in Congress, the party elites doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on the emphatic claim that Moscow is the capital of, by any other name, an evil empire. Rather than just calling for what’s needed—a truly independent investigation into allegations that the Russian government interfered with the U.S. election—the party line became hyperbolic and unmoored from the available evidence.

Given their vehement political investment in demonizing Russia’s President Putin, Democratic leaders are oriented to seeing the potential of detente with Russia as counterproductive in terms of their electoral strategy for 2018 and 2020. It’s a calculus that boosts the risks of nuclear annihilation, given the very real dangers of escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow.

Along the way, top party officials seem bent on returning to a kind of pre-Bernie-campaign doldrums. The new chair of the Democratic National Committee, Tom Perez, can't bring himself to say that the power of Wall Street is antithetical to the interests of working people. That reality came to painful light this week during a live appearance on national television.

During a 10-minute joint interview along with Bernie Sanders on Tuesday night, Perez was a font of exactly the kind of trite empty slogans and worn-out platitudes that oiled the engines of the dismal Clinton campaign.

While Sanders was forthright, Perez was evasive. While Sanders talked about systemic injustice, Perez fixated on Trump. While Sanders pointed to a way forward for realistic and far-reaching progressive change, Perez hung onto a rhetorical formula that expressed support for victims of the economic order without acknowledging the existence of victimizers.

"The politically motivated missile attack on Syria showed just how dangerous it is to keep Russia-baiting Trump, giving him political incentive to prove how tough he is on Russia after all."

In an incisive article published by The Nation magazine, Robert Borosage wrote last week: “For all the urgent pleas for unity in the face of Trump, the party establishment has always made it clear that they mean unity under their banner. That’s why they mobilized to keep the leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Representative Keith Ellison, from becoming head of the DNC. It’s why the knives are still out for Sanders and those who supported him.”

While Bernie is hardly a reliable opponent of U.S. war policies, he is significantly more critical of military intervention than the Democratic Party leaders who often champion it. Borosage noted that the party establishment is locked into militaristic orthodoxies that favor continuing to inflict the kind of disasters that the United States has brought to Iraq, Libya and other countries: “Democrats are in the midst of a major struggle to decide what they stand for and who they represent. Part of that is the debate over a bipartisan interventionist foreign policy that has so abjectly failed.”

For the Democratic Party’s most hawkish wing—dominant from the top down and allied with Clinton’s de facto neocon approach to foreign policy—the U.S. government’s April 6 cruise missile attack on a Syrian airfield was an indication of real leverage for more war. That attack on a close ally of Russia showed that incessant Russia-baiting of Trump can get gratifying military results for the Democratic elites who are undaunted in their advocacy of regime change in Syria and elsewhere.

The politically motivated missile attack on Syria showed just how dangerous it is to keep Russia-baiting Trump, giving him political incentive to prove how tough he is on Russia after all. What’s at stake includes the imperative of preventing a military clash between the world’s two nuclear superpowers. But the corporate hawks at the top of the national Democratic Party have other priorities.

Political Wire: Blue States Troll Trump

Generally I have no use for trolls, but in the instance I make an exception.

From Political Wire:

Politico: “Since gaveling in this year, legislatures in states that went for Hillary Clinton have proposed a flood of laws or resolutions that mock, challenge or repudiate some of the most controversial aspects of Trump’s presidency. Some are designed for the sole purpose of needling Trump by reminding him that he lost the popular vote, or that his for-profit school “Trump University” has been under legal attack for years or that a state’s own relations with Mexico are strong.”

“And that’s on top of the legal challenges to Trump’s controversial travel ban, a push for protections to state reproductive rights laws and vocal defiance of Trump’s economic threats against immigrant sanctuary cities.”

My Thoughts A week After Election Day

Today marks a week since Donald Trump won the presidential election over Hillary Clinton. It shocked me and many, many others. I'm not going to lie to you, it hurts and has caused me a couple of sleepless nights. It's hard to imagine how many polls got it wrong!

That being said, I was never a Hillary or Bernie fan; I didn't think either one could have won a widespread national election. For those who remember, I was an early supporter of  Martin O'Malley's candidacy.

I think the lack of enthusiasm for Hillary and the last minute James Comey self-injection doomed her. The millennial, black and Bernie support wasn't there as it was assumed to be. As a result, overall voter turnout, I believe, is down from 2012. That said, it's amazing that Clinton won the popular vote, which still continues to climb, by nearly 1 million votes over Trump.

I do believe that there will be widespread voter regret coming when Trumpsters realize that absolutely nothing the man campaigned on will come to throughition. He's not going to build a wall, he's not going to deport 10 million people, he's not going to ban Muslims, he's not going to grow the economy by 4-5% and you will not be able to renegotiate trade deals or eliminate our partnerships in NATO or other foreign alliances. This that tell you otherwise are lying.

Elections have consequences beyond who is elected President. Unfortunately, most of the electorate only votes once every 4 years and never think of the overall big picture.

People want jobs and a strong economy but they also want clean air and clean water. People want Social Security Medicare and Medicaid and equal rights, distributed to all not just a few. Unfortunately, the assaults on those programs, the environment and personal liberties has already begun.

Trump has a lot of legal issues of his own and he isn't the most honest person in the world. I go as far as to say that he is more dishonest than he and everybody else thought Hillary to be.

Before Michael Moore stated it, I said to others that I thought (think) that you'll see Mike Pence as president by the end of the 2018 due to the many Trump conflicts of interest and legal issues.

That's my rant on the subject and God help us all because we don't have a shovel big enough to get us out from underneath this shit-pile that's waiting to be dumped on all of us.

Michael Moore on Trump Voters: 'I Understand Why They Are Angry'

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, appeared on MTP Daily with Chuck Todd yesterday to talks about his documentary "Trumpland" and his views on the presidential race. It's enlightening and gives insight into each candidate and their supporters.

Say what you want about Moore, it doesn't matter. he's never been more right than he is in this interview.

What Are The Odds? European Bookmaker Handicaps VP Picks

The Republican National Convention is set to kick off Monday night in Cleveland and Donald Trump has stated that he will be announce his running mate tomorrow morning at 11am. So I would suggest getting your bets in before then.

So who do you think he'll choose? If you're a betting man the odds on favorite picks to be Trump's VP, at 3/1 odds,  is either Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) or former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, according to the Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.

The odds on Chris Christie being "The Donald's" choice? 5/1

Over on the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton still has a good ten days to decide who her running mate will be. The odds on favorite for her VP pick is Senator Tim Kaine and former Governor of Virginia, who currently stands 8/5, followed  closely by Massachutsettes Senator Elizabeth Warren and Current Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Julian Castro with 7/2 odds.

Clinton's former opponents for the Democratic nomination,  Bernie Sanders (7/2) and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (16/1)  are also potential running mates, as is New Jersey Senator Corey Booker (16/1).

Who's your choice? Let me know.

(h/t Sean Dunne)

***** UPDATE******
7/14/16 @ 13:00

It is being reported that Indiana Governor Mike Pence will be Donald Trump's VP pick and running mate the campaign. The odds for Pence being the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate is currently 10/1. We'll all know more later.

GOVERNOR CHRISTIE'S COMMENTS REFLECT TENDENCY FOR VIOLENCE, MISOGYNY

February 3, 2016

On the Ropes, He Says He’d "Beat [Secretary Clinton’s] Rear End"

(Trenton) — Leading New Jersey Democrats are expressing disgust at the sexist remarks of New Jersey’s absentee Governor, Chris Christie, who said of Secretary Clinton "I'll beat her rear end.” The remark was captured on video by ABC News.

“This is childish and inappropriate, even for Governor Christie. His poor performance in Iowa and the chaos of the Republican field, do not give him license to ignore basic rules of decorum or to throw all civility out the window,” said John Currie, the Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee.

Christie’s latest remarks echo a comment he made about another strong, progressive female official, who would not let him have his way. Speaking of Loretta Weinberg, the Majority Leader of the New Jersey State Senate, the Governor encouraged the media to " take a bat to her.”

“I am sure Chris Christie will argue that this is just who he is, but I hardly think that his violent tendencies are a selling point. This kind of demeaning language is unacceptable, and it begs the question: Would he speak of Senator Sanders or Martin O’Malley in these immature, and sexist terms?” asked Vice Chair of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee Lizette Delgado-Polanco.

Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle also responded, saying, “This is typical. When times get tough, Gov. Christie resorts to name calling, bullying, and one of his all time favorites behaviors -- misogyny. After finishing next to last in Iowa, the only rear end he should worry about is his own!”

Governor Christie’s remarks also lack foundation. While his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is on the ropes after his pathetic, 10th place finish in Iowa’s Republican caucus, Secretary Clinton finished in first place, after energizing and mobilizing tens of thousands of the state's Democrats in support of her candidacy.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, roughly two-thirds of the people who know him best believe he would make a bad president. A solid majority want him to resign from office, and save our state any more embarrassment.

Pallone Endorses Hillary Clinton for President

For Immediate Release
Jan. 8th, 2016

Emphasizes her Defense of Affordable Care Act

Long Branch - Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, endorsed Hillary Clinton for President today in the aftermath of the most recent GOP effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which has now been sent to President Obama for his signature or veto. Pallone was an original author of the Affordable Care Act.

“This week Republicans voted for the 62nd time to unravel the Affordable Care Act, threatening the health coverage of 22 million Americans. Meanwhile, they have no plan for replacement. While I am confident that this political maneuver will be rejected by the President, it is critical we work to elect a new president who will continue to protect the law and build upon it. We cannot allow Republicans to reverse the progress we have made to improve access to health care in this country.

Hillary Clinton has made healthcare reform a priority from the time she was the First Lady and during her highly successful tenure as a senator from New York. She’s been out front promoting the Affordable Care Act from the beginning and encouraging Americans to sign up for its coverage. I know she will make a great President, but I am emphasizing her support for the Affordable Care Act in my endorsement today because it is so crucial to have a President who will fight against GOP efforts to repeal or dismantle the Act.” said Pallone.

Martin O'Malley: A Hillary Alternative

There are many Democrats around the country that aren't ready to just hand Hillary Clinton the Democratic nomination next year, many of us feel that she needs to earn it first.  That is why many of us are looking for an alternative. Unfortunately, alternative Democrats are hard to find at the moment. It seems they are afraid of the Clinton juggernaut unless that is, you're the former governor of Maryland and your name happens to be Martin O'Malley.

O'Malley has been quietly going around Iowa and New Hampshire seeking support in advance of his own 2016 campaign announcement.  He hasn't been flashy or made a lot of headlines as of yet but he is a true progressive, isn't afraid to show it and he has a record to stand on. Martin O'Malley is a former a two-term Mayor of the city of Baltimore and a former two-term Governor of Maryland:
"Called “the best manager in government today,” Governor O’Malley has been nationally recognized for his skillful leadership of Maryland through the recession, as well as his success in implementing critical progressive priorities such as raising the minimum wage to $10.10, signing marriage equality into law, abolishing the death penalty and passing the DREAM Act to provide in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants. During his two terms, O’Malley recovered 100% of the jobs lost during the recession, first and foremost by investing in education, innovation and infrastructure. Under his leadership, Education Week magazine named Maryland’s public schools #1 in the nation for an unprecedented five years in a row, the College Board listed Maryland as one of the top states in the country for holding down the cost of college, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce named Maryland #1 in innovation and entrepreneurship three years in a row. As a leader in sustainability, O’Malley expanded renewable energy, accelerated energy conservation, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and took bold action to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
Prior to serving as Governor of Maryland, O’Malley served two terms as Mayor of Baltimore. Governor O’Malley received his bachelor’s degree from Catholic University and his law degree from the University of Maryland..."

Check out his website and his Twitter page @GovernorOMalley to start familiarizing yourself with him. I think he makes an attractive alternative for the anti-Hillary crowd.

Official Video: Hillary Clinton Announces 2016 Campaign

CHAIRMAN CURRIE APPLAUDS SECRETARY HILLARY CLINTON'S 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

For Immediate Release:
4/12/15

(Trenton) -- Today, New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie applauded the announcement of former U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from New York, Hillary Rodham Clinton, that she will seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

“I am excited that Hillary Clinton has declared her intent to seek the White House in 2016. She is the embodiment of America's pioneering spirit. Throughout her career she has been dedicated to expanding the middle class and creating a safer, more secure world,” said the Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, John Currie.

"I know a challenging campaign lays ahead, but, as a general principle, it would be nice if our sisters, daughters and granddaughters could look to the highest office in the land without wondering whether a glass ceiling bars their entry,” Currie added. "No matter who ultimately becomes the Democratic nominee, I am confident that he or she will win the White House."

Hillary Clinton's life is an inspiring story of hard-work and determination. An attorney, public servant, former First Lady, U.S. Senator from New York, well-traveled U.S. Secretary of State, mother and, now, grandmother, she is especially qualified to lead the United States of America. The New Jersey Democratic State Committee does not endorse candidates in competitive Democratic primary campaigns, but anyone interested in learning more about Secretary Clinton may visit her website www.hillaryclinton.com.

Stewart Dubs Christie " H.R. TakenStuff" Lavish Trips Paid For By Others

This is one of the funniest bits I've seen on The Daily Show in a long time. Jon Stewart skewers  Governor Chris Christie calling him "H.R. TakenStuff" for signing an executive order that allows him to travel lavishly at the expense of foreign governments.

Stewart also makes fun of the fact that NO Democrat at this time is willing to take on potential Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and whether or not potential Republican nominee Jeb Bush really loves 41 & 43.

President Barack Obama says he is 'confident' Gov. Corzine can win re-election

by Josh Margolin/Statehouse Bureau
Wednesday June 24, 2009

WASHINGTON -- President Obama today said he is confident Gov. Jon Corzine will be re-elected this fall, though he is well aware of the tough political climate in which Corzine is running for a second term.

"I think very highly of Jon Corzine. I think he's a terrific public servant," the president said during a White House interview with a handful of newspaper reporters from around the country. "I'm confident that he can win re-election. I don't think it's surprising that he may have a significant challenge."

Listen to audio of President Obama answer a question on Gov. Corzine and his re-election campaign

For his part, Corzine traveled around the country last year to campaign for Obama -- after first supporting Obama's Democratic presidential primary opponent, Hillary Clinton. New Jersey Democrats view Obama and his rock-star popularity as one of the key elements in their plans to turn the governor's sagging approval ratings into an Election Day victory in November.
The other main ingredient is Corzine's personal wealth, which the governor has tapped for previous campaigns and could conceivably bury the Republicans in an avalanche of television advertising from New York City to Philadelphia.

After serving with Obama in the U.S. Senate, Corzine ran for governor in 2005. In the fall election, Corzine is facing popular Republican Chris Christie, who made a name for himself prosecuting corrupt government officials as New Jersey's chief federal lawman.

AP Exclusive: Kennedy Talks Senate Seat

In her first sit-down interview since expressing interest in a U.S. Senate seat, Caroline Kennedy says she will have to work twice as hard if appointed to the seat representing New York, despite her famous name. (Dec. 26)
