Donald Trump's fight with Fox News and Megyn Kelly, explained

If anyone is interested in Donald Trump and tuned into this past Thursday night's GOP debate on Fox News, you witnessed the attempted take-down of the GOP presidential front runner by the very organization that made him the front runner in the first place. As a result, sensing a hoodwinking in progress, Trump lashed out and has continued to lash out against Fox and one of it's debate moderators, Megyn Kelly.

Vox.com's Ezra Klein explains how Fox's build-up and tear-down of Donald Trump goes beyond Megyn Kelly. It's about Fox New's lust for power, ratings and money. Klein also states how ultimately it's a fight that Trump can't win:
On Friday, Donald Trump said that Fox News's Megyn Kelly had it out for him during the first Republican presidential debate. And he had a theory as to why.

"She gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions," Trump told CNN. "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her... wherever."

So how did we get to the point where the leading Republican candidate for president is accusing one of Fox News's signature hosts of going on a PMS-fueled rant against him? The answer is surprisingly complex.

It's not just about what happened at Thursday's debate. It's also about the way Fox News had, until Thursday, been inflating the Trump bubble, and the broader tension between Fox News's role as a ratings-obsessed cable network, an actual journalistic outlet, and one of the most important institutional actors in the Republican Party.

But let's start with what happened at the debate, and why it left Trump feeling so betrayed.

There's been an internal war at Fox News over Donald Trump

Until Thursday, Fox News had been one of Trump's most important allies. The liberal media watchdog group Media Matters notes that between May 1st, 2015, and July 31st, 2015, Donald Trump was given, by far, the most airtime of any GOP presidential contender, with 31 appearances on the network; Jeb Bush, by contrast, only had 7.

And more than simple airtime, Fox News's hosts defended Trump when the rest of the media was piling onto his more noxious comments.

When Trump said Mexico was sending rapists and criminals into America, Fox News contributor Monica Crowley said Trump "is saying things that need to be said."

When Trump blasted Senator John McCain's war record, Fox News's Steve Doocy said, "if you listen to his comments in total...he's not critical of John McCain the war hero, he's critical of his Senate record." Harris Faulkner said "McCain is not admitting that he kind of started this whole thing."

Erik Bolling, a member of Fox News's 'The Five," said, "I like what Donald Trump is saying, I like what he's doing." On Fox and Friends, Trump was compared to St. Augustine and Mr. Smith from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. And on his radio show, Sean Hannity, one of Fox's key primetime personalities, gave Trump the ultimate compliment. He compared him to Ronald Reagan:
  • One of the greatest moments of Ronald Reagan's presidency, he was at Reykjavik. And Gorbachev was pushing him to give up Strategic Defense, what liberals called, derisively, 'Star Wars.' And he said, 'nyet' [no], and he walked away from the table. And eventually it led to peace. That's like Trump's art of the deal.
But there's been at least one powerful critic of Trump at Fox News: Rupert Murdoch. On July 22nd, New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman, author of a biography of Roger Ailes, reported that there was a schism at Fox News over Donald Trump.

  • According to sources, Murdoch has tried — and failed — to rein in Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, who, insiders say, is pushing Fox to defend Trump’s most outlandish comments. This week, Ailes told his senior executives during a meeting that Murdoch recently called him and asked if Fox could "back off the Trump coverage," a source told me. Ailes is said to have boasted to his executives that he told Murdoch he was covering Trump "the way he wanted to."

Murdoch loathed Trump so much that he took to Twitter to make his feelings known. "When is Donald Trump going to stop embarrassing his friends, let alone the whole country?" he asked.

Fox News went after Trump at the GOP debate

Donald Trump's post-debate tantrum has been an embarrassment. But it's not, on some level, a surprise.
After months when Fox News was his main ally, Trump stepped onto the Fox News debate stage and suddenly found the network seemingly committed to his destruction.

The first question was designed to embarrass Trump in front of a national audience of Republicans. Bret Baier began the debate by asking, "Is there anyone on stage, and can I see hands, who is unwilling tonight to pledge your support to the eventual nominee of the Republican party and pledge to not run an independent campaign against that person?"

Trump had already made clear that he wouldn't take that pledge. But Fox News began the debate by making sure every Republican in the country knew Trump wouldn't take that pledge. It was a question designed to embarrass him, and Baier kept turning the screws.

"Experts say an independent run would almost certainly hand the race over to Democrats and likely another Clinton," Baier told Trump. "You can't say tonight that you can make that pledge?"

And, for Trump, it went downhill from there.

Megyn Kelly's first question for Trump exposed his rampant misogyny in front of a national audience. "You've called women you don't like 'fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals,'" she began.

Trump, of course, interrupted. "Only Rosie O'Donnell," he said with a smile.

Kelly wasn't having it. "For the record, it was well beyond Rosie O'Donnell," she replied. "You once told a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice it would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees. Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president, and how will you answer the charge from Hillary Clinton, who was likely to be the Democratic nominee, that you are part of the war on women?"

Trump's answer was a master class in how to excuse sexism and wield the politics of white male resentment. "I don't frankly have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn't have time either," Trump replied.

"Honestly Megyn," he continued, "if you don't like it, I'm sorry. I've been very nice to you, although I could probably maybe not be, based on the way you have treated me. But I wouldn't do that."

It turned out he would do that. But we'll get to that in a second.

The next question to Trump came from Chris Wallace. And here, again, the question was designed to embarrass the candidate.

"Mr. Trump, it has not escaped anybody's notice that you say that the Mexican government, the Mexican government is sending criminals -- rapists, drug dealers, across the border ... you have repeatedly said that you have evidence that the Mexican government is doing this, but you have refused or declined to share [that evidence]. Why not use this first Republican presidential debate to share your proof with the American people?"

But the demolition effort didn't end with the questions. As soon as the debate ended, Fox News cut to a focus group being conducted by pollster Frank Luntz. The entire segment was about how the focus group came in liking Trump and left loathing him. It was a festival of Trump hatred.

Look at the debate from Trump's perspective. His onetime friends at Fox News crafted the questions to embarrass him and then, once he was off the air, cut to a focus group — and who knows if that was a real focus group or actors who were coached on what to say — who told the whole country that Trump had lost the debate.
And there's nothing Donald Trump hates like being called a loser....

Investigator’s Tape Exposes Bill O’Reilly’s JFK Fib

Another Bill O'Reilly fabrication... He's beginning to make Brain Williams look like George Washington.

Read the story and listen to the embedded audio clips of the 1977 phone calls between O'Reilly and congressional investigator Gaeton Fonzi. The audio leaves no doubt that Bill O'Reilly is lying about his involvement in a JFK assassination investigation that he wrote about in his book Killing Kennedy.

 From JFKFacts.org:
In his best-selling book Killing Kennedy, Bill O’Reilly tells a brief tale of an intrepid reporter — himself — chasing the historical truth of JFK’s assassination in south Florida. But the story itself is a fiction, as O’Reilly reveals here in his own voice.
In the annals of the JFK assassination story, rife with CIA and FBI malfeasance, O’Reilly’s fanciful anecdote might seem trivial. It is not the saddest feature of his book, which manages to ignore all of the high-quality JFK assassination scholarship of the last two decades.
But as O’Reilly’s yarn is presented as fact in USA Today and the Fort-Worth Telegram; as his book dominates the best-seller charts; and as a credulous National Geographic embarks on making a documentary of Killing Kennedy, O’Reilly’s credibility matters.
In O’Reilly’s account, the dramatic incident happened on March 29, 1977. The Fox News talk show host was then a 28-year-old television reporter in Dallas seeking to make a name for himself by investigating a popular subject that other reporters disdained: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy....

I posted a link to this article early yesterday on my Facebook page after seeing it first posted by a friend. Since that time the story has really caught on and has been reported by many in the media. Until now Fox News has been standing behind Bill O'Reilly and the controversy surrounding his Falkland Islands "war zone" fib. It seems however that that support is waining, Fox has seemed to go silent all of a sudden with O'Reilly's obvious fabrication of JFK story

MediaMatters: Fox News' Double Standard For Right-Wing Cop Killers

This story on MediaMatters kinda puts things into perspective. Why are white cop killers presented differently by the media (Fox News) than black cop killers, yet both are just as heinous? is it for political reasons?

ERIC BOEHLERT
The politicization surrounding the killing of two New York Police Department officers over the weekend was amazingly swift. Fox News led the right-wing media charge, immediately claiming Democratic elected officials were somehow responsible for the gun rampage, which began in Baltimore when Ismaaiyl Brinsley allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, and extended to Brooklyn when the mentally troubled shooter assassinated two police officers, before killing himself on a city subway platform.
On Fox, hosts and guests were sure who was to blame for the tragedy; not the gunman necessarily, but political and community leaders like President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Mayor Bill de Blasio and MSNBC's Al Sharpton. Why? Because the men, to varying degrees, have spoken out about the troubled relationship between law enforcement and the black community, and raised concerns about two recent high-profile cases, Michael Brown and Eric Garner, in which unarmed black men were killed, and police officers responsible were not indicted.
Against that backdrop of civil protest, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Fox News, "I personally feel that Mayor de Blasio, Sharpton and others like them, they actually have blood on their hands."
"Let's talk about the president as well," responded Fox's Jeanine Pirro, suggesting Obama and Mayor de Blasio were to blame. "The two of them have undoubtedly created racial tensions that worsens, not betters the situation for law enforcement."
Appearing on Fox News, former New York City Mayor Rudolf Giuliani insisted the message from recent Obama "propaganda" was that "everybody should hate the cops." (No such Obama "propaganda" actually exists.)
The coverage of the Brooklyn killings on Fox News has leaned heavily on assigning a larger cultural and political blame. Yet in stark contrast, as Media Matters has documented, Fox News has routinely paid very little attention to breaking news stories that feature right-wing, or anti-government, gunmen who target law enforcement officials as a way to deliver their warped political messages.
And critically, when they have touched on those deadly attacks, Fox talkers have stressed that it's not fair to blame politics. Note that in 2013, after racist skinhead Michael Page started killing worshipers at an Oak Creek, WI., Sikh temple, and then murdered a police officer, Fox's Andrea Tantaros stressed that the killing spree was an isolated event that didn't have any larger implications. "How do you stop a lunatic?" she asked. "This is not a political issue."
At Fox, that has been the pattern: These kind of deadly right-wing attacks are treated as isolated incidents that are mostly void of politics. Instead, the perpetrators are portrayed as lone gunmen (and women) who do not represent any cultural or political movement.
On a September night this year, 31-year-old marksman Eric Frein was allegedly laying in wait outside the Blooming Grove police barracks in northeastern Pennsylvania, preparing to assassinate state troopers. That night, state police officer Bryon Dickson was shot and killed as he walked towards his patrol car.
He "made statements about wanting to kill law enforcement officers and to commit mass acts of murder," state police commissioner Frank Noonan warned the public at the time. Another official noted the shooter has a "longstanding grudge against law enforcement and government in general" dating back to at least 2006.
"He was obviously a big critic of the federal government," a man name Jack told CNN. "No indications of really any malice towards law enforcement in particular. Mostly--most of his aggression was towards the federal government."
In the two weeks after the shooting, as a massive manhunt unfolded in the mountains of Pennsylvania, Fox programs mentioned Frein's name in just six reports, according to Nexis transcripts. One of the reports mentioned Frein's hatred of law enforcement, but none mentioned Frein's vocal anti-government leanings.
When Frein was finally captured in late October, Fox News covered the stories a handful of times. Again, there was no emphasis on his possible anti-government motivations and why the "survivalist" set out to assassinate law enforcement officers.
Another police assassination attack unfolded in June. Claiming to be acting under the bloody "banner of Liberty and Truth," Jerad Miller and his wife Amanda entered a restaurant Las Vegas executed two local policemen while they at lunch.
As bullets flew, one of the shooters reportedly shouted that the "revolution" had begun. The killers then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, and covered them with cloth that featured the "Don't tread on me" Gadsden flag, which has recently been adopted as a symbol of the tea party movement.
Six days earlier, the shooters had posted a manifesto on Facebook where he announced "we must prepare for war." Jerad Miller, who traveled to Cliven Bundy's Nevada ranch this spring to join the militia protests against the federal government, declared: "To stop this oppression, I fear, can only be accomplished with bloodshed." ...  Continue Reading

if the Second Amendment is the only one that can't be touched.

if Ted Cruz's resemblance to Joe McCarthy makes you feel all tingly and giddy inside.

if you believe Herman Cain will actually say something intelligent on Fox.

if you oppose investments in America while helping billionaires make investments in the Cayman Islands...

if you blame President Obama for debt caused by a pre-Obama Wall Street crash...

if you want to subsidize fetuses but starve poor children.

if you still believe in trickle-down economics despite the facts & if so you should read this

if you say you love America, but the people you hate most always wind up being Americans.

if you claim to be a 'good Christian' but label the poor as lazy moochers -

9. if you believe that the rich are that way because of their superior morals.
if you balance your state's budget using stimulus $$ that you condemn the Feds for giving you.

if you preach fiscal conservatism while planning to build an 11,000 sq. ft. house.

10. if you advocate for secession and then run for President of the country you'd secede from.

Mulshine Is Correct; Where's The "Pork" In The Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill ?

I may not always agree with his opinions but Paul Mulshine of the Star-Ledger, is spot on with this commentary. He sets FOX News and others straight on "all that pork" which is allegedly contained in the Hurricane Sandy relief bill.

There was only one item of unrelated "pork" in the original relief bill, which was taken out before Congress adjourned last week without voting on the on it. The rest of the spending to fix storm damaged federal buildings and replace vehicle are all legitimate storm related items and were rightfully included in the bill:
"A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can put its shoes on." Mark Twain said that more than a century before the internet era. Nowadays, the lies can circle the globe before the truth even puts on its socks.
The lie of which I speak is the assertion that the Hurricane Sandy aid package now before Congress is filled with billions of dollars for projects unrelated to the storm.
This is nonsense. Thanks to the internet, anyone can find the original $60 billion aid package online. Poring through its 73 pages shows line item after line item directly related to Sandy. The one big unrelated item, $150 million for Alaskan fisheries, was taken out of the package before the House adjourned last week without voting on it.
As for the rest of the package, a good example is the proposed federal spending to repair hurricane damage to federal buildings and vehicles. The critics call that pork. But unless Santa Claus or the tooth fairy pays to fix that damage, the federal government’s stuck with the tab.

That is typical of the nonsense you can find on the net about the aid package. Tracking it to its roots is like watching "telephone" — the children’s game in which a whispered comment is passed around a circle of people, emerging at the end as something totally different.
In this case, the children began with a piece on the Heritage Foundation website by Matt Mayer. In the piece, Mayer questions the voting procedure for the bill more than the spending itself. When it comes to spending to mitigate the risk from future storms, for example, Mayer writes, "If the Obama Administration believes that these future projects should be funded, it should place those funding requests in the upcoming budget."
That’s a point on which reasonable people can disagree. But as for the actual expenditures cited by Mayer, they are similar to those Congress enacted 11 days after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005. Mayer calls for some reforms for aid in future storms. But that’s to be decided in the future.

As that Heritage report worked its way through the internet, however, commenters kept citing it as evidence of ever-more-extreme examples of out-of-control spending. By the time the telephone was handed to Fox News, the talking heads were reporting that a third of the money would be spent on non-hurricane-related pork — something Mayer never stated....

Chaos on Bulls**t Mountain

Last night's episode of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart was once again hilarious and on the mark

In the 48 hours since the Romney video first gained wide exposure, turd containment crews at Fox News have been working overtime on Bulls**t Mountain

The entitlement society enabled by President Obama allows welfare queens like ExxonMobil, AT&T and GE to live off the government dole. Fox News argues enough is enough.

Christine "I Dabbled Into Witchcraft" O'Donnell Will Headline Fundraiser For Monmouth GOP'S Star Candidate

O'Donnell's extremist views on evolution and witchcraft find company with the Monomouth County Republican Party and their star candidate Anna Little

HAZLET - Monmouth County Republican Party Chairman John Bennett is hosting a fundraiser for fringe congressional candidate Anna Little with a $2,500 per head sponsorship featuring failed Delaware Senate candidate, Christine O'Donnell.
(Tea Party Witchywoman Christine O'Donnell)

O'Donnell was crushed as a candidate for US Senate in 2010 as a result of out of touch extremist comments. She has questioned evolution, claimed that the country has weekly shootings and that she has dabbled in witchcraft. The following are some of the many extremist comments she has made.

"You know what, evolution is a myth." / "Why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?" - Politically Incorrect

"We took the Bible and prayer out of public schools. Now we're having weekly shootings. We had the 60s sexual revolution, and now people are dying of AIDS." -- Politically Incorrect

"I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven." / "One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar." - - Politically Incorrect, 1999

"American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains." - Fox News's The O'Reilly Factor, 2007

"The Monmouth County Republican Party and their star candidate Anna Little are teaming up with the most extreme candidate ever to run for the U.S. Senate - an individual who openly talked about her involvement in witchcraft and who rejected the most basic theory of science, evolution. This is who extremist Anna Little and the Monmouth County Republicans are choosing to align themselves with and one has to wonder if they share Ms. O'Donnell's views on evolution, witchcraft, women in the military and the countless issues in which she is out of touch with not just the residents in Monmouth County, but members of her own party. It becomes scarier everyday what a Congresswoman Anna Little would like," stated Monmouth County Democratic Party Chairman Vin Gopal.

Jon Stewart: CNN & Fox News Report Supreme Court Decision

And if you just happened to miss what Jon Stewart had to say about what happened yesterday when the Supreme Court handed down it's landmark decisions on health care reform, here's your chance to get his take on it.

Of course he doesn't address what was side by those on both side of the debate; no he goes after CNN and FOX News for trying to be the first to report the Courts ruling and getting it wrong!

Both reported that the individual mandate provision in the Affordable Health Care Act was struck down by the Court only to report minutes later that they were wrong.

It's a classic clip and very funny, you have to see it if you haven't already.

Letter: Middletown Planning Board to Hear Proposed Expansion of Middletown’s Islamic Society of Monmouth County Whose Iman Supports Hamas Terrorist Group

My name is Ryan Mauro and I’m the national security analyst for RadicalIslam.org, the flagship website of the Clarion Fund. I am frequently on FOX News Channel and am a resident of Wall Township.

I am writing you because I recently learned that the imam of Middletown’s Islamic Society of Monmouth County, Reda Shata, is a supporter of the Hamas terrorist group. You can read more about Imam Shata in my article, "The NYPD vs. The Hamas-Supporting 'Moderate.'" The ISMC is currently seeking approval for a large expansion to accommodate its growing membership.

The proposed expansion is on the agenda for the Planning Board hearing on June 6 and I will be coming to inform the officials and audience about this information. The event begins at 7 PM. It is not known where the ISMC falls on the agenda, so other proposals may be discussed before this specific issue is brought up.
The hearing will take place in the court room of the Town Hall building at 1 Kings Highway in Middletown.

I greatly appreciate any coverage you can provide.

Distort, Attack, Repeat: The Fox Propaganda Machine in Action

If your of the belief that Fox News is nothing more than a propaganda machine for the Republican Party, you'll be interested in watching a hour by hour slide show that takes you through a typical day on the "Fixed" news network of relentless "Obama bashing".

The feature can be found over at Rolling Stone's website and accompanies a story about how Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes created the most profitable propaganda machine in history.

Ailes runs the most profitable – and therefore least accountable – head of the News Corp. hydra. Fox News reaped an estimated profit of $816 million last year – nearly a fifth of Murdoch’s global haul. The cable channel’s earnings rivaled those of News Corp.’s entire film division, which includes 20th Century Fox, and helped offset a slump at Murdoch’s beloved newspapers unit, which took a $3 billion write-down after acquiring The Wall Street Journal. With its bare-bones news gathering operation – Fox News has one-third the staff and 30 fewer bureaus than CNN – Ailes generates profit margins above 50 percent. Nearly half comes from advertising, and the rest is dues from cable companies. Fox News now reaches 100 million households, attracting more viewers than all other cable-news outlets combined, and Ailes aims for his network to “throw off a billion in profits.”

Daily Show Video: Veiled Criticism

Obama Takes On the GOP Retreat

He came, He spoke, He conquered...President Obama attended today's Congressional GOP Retreat outside of Baltimore and by all accounts kicked-ass!

The entire ass-whopping was broadcast live on all of the major cable news networks and C-Span. Evidently the beating Obama was placing on the GOP was so brutal that Fox News broke away early from so that they could show a non-news interview with NY Congressman Peter King, while other networks stayed till the end of the 1.5 hour confrontation.

It will be hard for the GOP to get up off the canvass after this one, score this a big knock-out by the President.

Here's a little bit of what Politico had to say about it:

BALTIMORE — President Barack Obama on Friday accused Republicans of portraying health care reform as a "Bolshevik plot" and telling their constituents that he’s "doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America."

Speaking to House Republicans at their annual policy retreat here, Obama said that over-the-top GOP attacks on him and his agenda have made it virtually impossible for Republicans to address the nation’s problems in a bipartisan way.

“What happens is that you guys don’t have a lot of room to negotiate with me,” Obama said. "The fact of the matter is, many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable with your own base, with your own party because what you've been telling your constituents is, ‘This guy's doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America.' ''

Obama’s comments came in the midst of an extraordinary back-and-forth with Republican House members — a scene straight out of the House of Commons that played out live on cable TV.

Republicans invited Obama to appear at their annual conference; the president accepted — and then surprised them by asking that cameras and reporters be allowed into the room.
Republicans immediately agreed to the request, but they may be regretting it now.
Again and again, Obama turned the Republicans questions against them — accusing them of obstructing legislation for political purposes and offering solutions that won’t work....

You can watch the whole confrontation below from C-Span if you wish.

RNC chairman doubts GOP will win back the House this November

The Hill -
By Bob Cusack

RNC Chairman Michael Steele said Monday night that he doesn't think Republicans will win control of the House in 2010 .

Asked by Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel whether he believes the GOP is going to take over the House, the chairman of the Republican National Committee responded, "Not this year."

Pressed on his prediction, Steele later said, "I don't know yet." Steele said, "We're going to see, I think, nice pickups in the House," but added it is difficult to provide a number because it is still early in the 2010 cycle.

Other Republicans, including House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) and House Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), have expressed more optimism about the chances the GOP will retake the lower chamber this year.

Hannity urged Steele on Monday night to draft a new Contract with America before the November elections.

Steele did not completely commit to a new contract, but said, "I think you're going to a see a definitive document with clear definitions of who we are."
