Vice President Joe Biden and the Middle Class Task Force

The President created a Middle Class Task Force and asked his right hand man, Vice President Joe Biden, to lead it. The Task Force has one goal -- to make sure the recovery doesnt just benefit the wealthy, like past expansions, but improves quality of life for the middle class.

The Barracuda Bites Back

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but i just can't get enough Sarah Palin and those wacky Wassilla Hillbillies.
Palin just seems to be getting more and more desperate and defensive about her run for vice-president as seen in this segment of Countdown with Keith Olbermann. In this impromptu press conference upon her return to Alaska yesterday, Palin sounds frazzled and ready to cry. Keith has Margaret Carlson comment on the Palin press conference.

Palin Only Visits "Pro-America" States

According to the Washington Post, Gov. Sarah Palin "made a point of mentioning that she loved to visit the 'pro-America' areas of the country, of which North Carolina is one. No word on which states she views as unpatriotic."

She also said she no longer watches the news.

Said Palin: "But yeah, sometimes you do get depressed watching what it is that they're reporting and the spin and some of the distortion of what our message is and what we stand for. Sometimes that, that gets draining."

David Brooks: Sarah Palin " Represents A Fatal Cancer To The Republican Party"

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.
Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":...

Women and Sarah Palin

The National Organization for Women has endorsed the Obamba-Biden ticket for just the reasons listed below. They usually do not endorse, but in this case they believed it was absolutely necessary to take a stand. if you agree, pass it on:

Friends, We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. We believe that this terrible? decision has surpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce on the part of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate that has a real possibility of becoming fact.

Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to forourselves and for our present or future daughters. To date, she is against sex education, birth control, the pro-choice platform, environmental protection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech, gun control, the separation of church and state, and polar bears. To say nothing of her complete lack of real preparation to become the second-(and possibly first)-most-powerful person on the planet.

We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as a rash, incompetent, and altogether devastating choice for Vice President. Ms. Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and from which we've so demonstrably benefited. First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women voters. We want to disagree, publicly.

If you agree that Palin is an irresponsible, even dangerous, choice for VP, please consider participating in this drive. Gentlemen, send this to the women you know and care for. I know it's tough to understand the way this choice is impacting women, but I have never seen so many women so outraged, angry and distraught in my entire life. We'd like our voices heard.

The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo

From Talking Points Memo
By Greg Sargent - September 1, 2008

On the same day that the Republicans were forced to dramatically cut back their convention activities, the Palin Meltdown unfolded with extraordinary speed. It's worth pondering the totality of what happened today, in a mere half day...

* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.

* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.

* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain's Veep candidate.

* The news broke that Palin's 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain's candidacy.

* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin's own spokesperson hadn't known about it only two days ago.

* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy "last week" -- without saying what day last week he knew about it.

* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin -- now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she'd been picked.

* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska -- a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.

What else will come out today? After all, there are still six hours left until September 2nd...

The "vetting" of Sarah Palin

Ron Beasley over at NewsHoggers.com in my opinoin has it about right when he says "Yes Sarah Palin was vetted all right but not by the McCain Campaign."

Surprise? First Two National Polls Find Palin Gains LESS Support from Women

The first national polls on John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin yesterday came out today from Rasmussen and Gallup -- and contrary to what the GOP probably hoped, she scored less well with women than men.

Here's a finding from Gallup: Among Democratic women -- including those who may be disappointed that Hillary Clinton did not win the Democratic nomination -- 9% say Palin makes them more likely to support McCain, 15% less likely.

From Rasmussen: Some 38% of men said they were more likely to vote for McCain now, but only 32% of women. By a narrow 41% to 35% margin, men said she was not ready to be president -- but women soundly rejected her, 48% to 25%.

Sarah Palin: You're No Dan Quayle -- and That's Not a Compliment!

Michael Russnow of the Huffington Post states that John McCain sold his soul "in the bleakest of hopes that he could convert angry Hillary voters to his cause.", by choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate.

He goes on to state:

"If he'd wanted to steal Hillary voters and as a double trump show up Obama's inexperience and match Joe Biden's fortitude, why not go with someone like Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine, an individualist like he fashions himself who went a bit further and voted, unlike McCain, against Clinton's impeachment. It wouldn't have thrilled the conservatives, but where do they really have to go? To Bob Barr, a Libertarian? No, they'd suck in their tummies, take a deep breath and do anything to stop the upstart Obama machine and his lefty running-mate Joe Biden..."

"So in a misplaced manner, he figured he might pick up two birds with one stone and chose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a young woman of the far political right who would thrill his flagging conservative base and with twisted logic felt just the fact of her gender would bring alienated Hillary voters (especially women) to his cause...."

"Do we believe that the Hillary voters will be more electrified with a woman who is against all forms of abortion, including rape and incest? A woman, though the daughter of a science teacher, who wants creationism taught in our schools? A woman who, like the Bush administration, is not at all concerned about the human effects on global warming? A woman who objected to the Department of Interior's listing of polar bears as an endangered species in order to protect the oil drilling companies?..."

"Suddenly, Dan Quayle is looking a lot better. No, I was not a fan and loved Senator Lloyd Bentsen's comeback to him in the 1988 vice presidential debate when Quayle indicated his experience was similar to John F. Kennedy. It was charming and quite funny when Bentsen said Quayle was no Jack Kennedy. But at least in terms of legislative experience he was. Quayle had been a congressman for four years and a senator for eight years, which, whatever his shortcomings, leads me to my original thought: Sarah Palin, you're no Dan Quayle -- not by a long shot, and that's not a compliment."

POLLS: VOTERS DOUBT PALIN’S QUALIFICATIONS

Most voters are unfamiliar with John McCain’s new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and many question her qualifications to be president, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup poll.

In the poll taken Friday, 39 percent said she is ready to serve as president if needed, 33 percent said she isn’t and 29 percent have no opinion.

That’s the lowest rating any running mate has had since then-Indiana Sen. Dan Quayle was selected in 1988 to join George H.W. Bush’s team.

Sarah Palin, Dick Cheney in a dress?

One of the best lines I've heard this weekend to describe Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was uttered by Ron Reagan Jr. while commentating on the radio program "7 days in America" broadcast over Air America yesterday.

Ron Reagan Jr. said of Palin:

"She is pro-life, pro-gun, anti gay rights, doesn't believe in global warming, doesn't believe in equal pay for equal work for women and that ANWR should be opened to oil drilling.  She is Dick Cheney in a dress with less experience than Dan Quayle"

Alaska GOP-ers have frosty reaction to Palin pick

From the Scoreboard at Politico.com comes the following bit of information. It seems as thought members of the Alaskan GOP are not all that broken up over seeing  Gov. Sarah Palin leave if elected Vice-President.

"The legislative leadership of the Alaska Republican Party isn’t enamored with Palin’s selection.

State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to tell her the news."She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Green, who has feuded with Palin, brought up the big oil tax increase Palin pushed through last year. She also pointed to the award of a $500 million state subsidy to a Canadian firm to pursue a natural gas pipeline that's far from guaranteed.

House Speaker John Harris, a Republican from Valdez, was also astonished at the news. He didn't want to get into the issue of her qualifications.

"She's old enough," Harris said. "She's a U.S. citizen." "

Democrats begin attacks on Palin

The Hill
By Klaus Marre and Manu Raju

Shortly after the announcement that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) had selected Sarah Palin as his running mate, Democrats began questioning the Alaska governor’s ability to step in as president.

“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency,” said Bill Burton, a spokesman for Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.). “Gov. Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it's just more of the same.”

Democrats also wasted no time bringing up that Palin is under investigation for her firing of a state official.

“Sarah Palin is inexperienced, unethical, and wrong on all the issues that Americans care about,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on MSNBC. “Do we have confidence that if, God forbid, something happened to John McCain that Sarah Palin is going to know what to do and is going to have her hand on the tiller of America's foreign policy? What makes her ready to be commander in chief?”

Wasserman Schultz pointed to the probe of Palin and sought to tie her to other Alaskans under investigation.

“There has been a culture of corruption [in] Alaska. Sen. Ted Stevens, Congressman Don Young, Gov. Sarah Palin — they are all cut from the same cloth,” Wasserman Schultz stated.

Obama to announce Veep by Text Message, Email

The Obama campaign announced today that it will reveal their choice for the Vice-Presidential running mate sometime between now and the Convention by txt msg & email.

If you want to be one of the first people to find out who Obama's running mate will be you can Text VP to 62262 or visit http://my.barackobama.com/vp

I am wondering whether or not this is such a good idea,if you want maximum exposure I would think that you should hold a major press conference to make the announcement. If their idea is to build a frenzy of momentum by trying to be hip and relying on word of mouth it may not have the same impact.

The timing of the announcement would be critical for the Obama campaign so I would not expect a running mate to be announce during the Olympics, but that's my opinion, they may think differently.

Unfortunately, I am one of the last people to find out this type of stuff so I am sure that I'll wind up getting the information like the rest of you, from the news media hours after it has been announced.

Clinton for veep group says she’s out of the running

This just in.
VoteBoth.com, a website created by former aides to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) to push her as presidential candidate Barack Obama’s running mate, is shutting down because Clinton is “no longer under consideration.”

According to the website Barack Obama has picked Hillary Clinton to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. It is because of this that they feels Hillary is no longer in the running for the second spot on the ticket.
