Patch: Meet Mike Morris, Running For Middletown Township Committee

The Middletown Patch has posted my Candidate profile, a simple Q&A that consists of several inquiring questions that Middletown residents should find interesting. I'm going to post a snippet of the online publication here and encourage you all to follow the link to finish the article.

My only gripe (and it's minor) with this article is that regardless of how many times its pointed out that Tony Perry, like myself, is running for a seat on the Township Committee, where if reelected, he can be appointed once again as Mayor. It always seem to come across as if we're both running for Mayor. Middletown does not elect it's own Mayor. The person assuming the mayorship is  appointed to the position by the other four sitting members of the Township Committee... Rant over 😊

Here is a little bit of what i had to say:

Give a brief bio on yourself. Age, education, occupation.

I’ve lived and raised my family in Middletown for 34 years. I’ve stood up for working-class taxpayers, special-needs families, affordability and transparency in government. Since 2008 my watchdog blog “MiddletownMike” has kept residents informed about township policies, issues and events. I am a proud graduate of Brookdale Community College and have worked in the chemical industry for 30 years.

Why are you running?

Middletown's government lacks a clear vision for our town's future. They rely on outdated strip malls and large developments without a strategy for organic growth. We need better commuting options, including walkability, bike lanes and transit connectivity. But, instead of addressing traffic congestion, the Township Committee keeps building car-dependent communities.

Growth is inevitable, but how we manage it defines our future. We can't grow sustainably without attracting new residents and businesses. Unfortunately, Middletown has an affordability problem: Young professionals, working-class families and seniors are being priced out. There are no more affordable housing options for those that wish to stay in our community.

The annual reassessment of Township property values has driven massive tax increases for the average homeowner. According to Middletown's CFO, the average property assessment has risen 47 percent over the past five years. That’s great if you're about to sell your home. If not, the tax increases associated with it will put you into the poorhouse!

Despite higher taxes, we're getting less value. Brush and leaf collection has been reduced, storm clean-up is lacking, our roads and sidewalks are in terrible condition. We can do better! We must commit to fixing our broken streets and sidewalks to promote and restore our walkable neighborhoods.

Can you pinpoint any failures on the Middletown Township Committee in the past few years — specifically point to things you would have done differently? What do you see are mistakes they've made in running the Township?

Over the years its been the perception that the Township Committee is more interested in maintaining the status quo than actually leading. Instead of looking forward to the future and embracing the changing world around us, its members look to the antiquated past of days gone by. Instead of living in the 21st century, they look back to the last century and yearn for the days of the 1950s. They are reactionary as opposed to visionary....

Like It or Not, MiddletownMike Facebook Page

For quite a while now, I've found that I just haven't had the time or energy that I use to, to devote to blogging. When I started this blog nearly 10 years ago, life was different and I would spend hours each day keeping pace with the events that unfolded around me.

Blogging, which started out as a hobby allowed me to express my opinions on the world but it literally was becoming a full-time job, which took away quality time from my family and friends. So I started to pull back. As a result, I lost focus and the blog isn't quite what it was. I'm hoping to change that however, and get back to something that is fun to do and is informative for those that follow.

Like many people today, I've found myself constantly on social media; I'm on Facebook and have both a Twitter and Instagram account (which I have links to on the right hand sidebar of the blog). It seems that my "free" time that I used to spend stashed away, behind the office door and on the computer blogging, has been replaced by my various social media feeds, many of which became fodder for posts on the MiddletownMike blog.

Lately, I've been giving a lot of thought on what I can do to change things in order to get back on track. And I think I came up with an idea that will work!  For the past few days, I've been working on creating a MiddletownMike Facebook page (see the shiny new badge on the sidebar?).

Seeing how I'm spending so much time on social media anyway, the MiddletownMike Facebook page, I envision, will act as a companion to the MiddletownMike blog when I don't have the "free" time to write posts for the it. I can post stories and links to the Facebook page with  brief comments, when time is short. Then, when time allows, I can cross post to the MiddletownMike blog and vise versa to Facebook. This I think will free up time for me and as it will also allow me to keep my personal Facebook page personal and to myself, which is a good thing.

So to recap. I'm not giving up blogging, I have every intention of keeping this blog up to date and as relevant as it can be. To help do that, I've created a MiddletownMike Facebook page that I hope everyone who reads this will support by hitting the "Like" button to follow it and share it with others.

Middletown GOP Thug, Stephanie Murray Supporter, Leaves Threatening Comment On MiddletownMike Blog

Hello All,

Earlier today I received a disturbing comment left on my MiddletownMike blog by someone who claims to be a personal friend of Middletown Republican candidate for Township Committee Stephanie Murray.

This individual writing anonymously as "The real Big Mike" left a number of derogatory comments about myself ,which is not an issue, I'm a big boy and it comes with the territory, what does disturbs me though is this persons idle threats. Threats to find credit card statements or track down doctor visits and to "go all out" digging for information against me and "everybody" in my circle.

Obviously this person is delusional but a threat is a threat and they can not be taken lightly no matter how absurd they may seem.

Is this the type of person that Stephanie Murray and other members of the Middletown GOP like to call supporters and friends?

I hope not, but if so then others should know about it. That's why I have forward the below message to Mrs. Murray, as well as everyone else in my address book. I am asking you to do the same.

This type of behavior in the name of a candidate for elective office crosses the line and should never be tolerated. If it is, then we have to question whether or not that candidate is fit to hold elective office in Middletown or elswhere.

Mike

The real Big Mike has left a new comment on your post "The Making of a Republican Candidate in Middletown...":

So a friend of mine told me about your left leaning site. As is typical with all leftist people, you dont report the news. Instead you report your side of a story and in your head, you actually believe it to be accurate. We do have one thing in common. Im big Mike also...Im big cause Im 6'4 and 230 lbs. Your Big cause your 5'11 and 320...Either way we have something in common......

As I read through you posts, it hasn't been to difficult to see why you have never hit it big in journalism. I think I'm going to due some poking around also.Your life needs to be examined a little so the other bloggers know who they are talking to. There must be a picture out there of you shoving a few yodels down your throat while watching Tom and Jerry reruns. There must be a credit acrd that you made a late payment on or some doctors visit that you had and gave a flase name to avoid payment. You obviously arent a fan of Michele Obamas anti obesity campaign so I wont find anything there.

Im a personal friend of MRS. Murray. Yep I said it..Can you imagine. What scares liberals is the truth. You won't discuss the issues because you will lose. So you try to dig up some secret dirt that you think will help sway votes. Here is the Deal...Her Dedication to public service is unquestionable. In fact she does it for free....Her parental skills are awesome. She is a wonderful mother and wife. She is loaded to the gills with friends. Her children go to Catholic school to learn about God. Just like some jewish children go to Hebrew school. She is basically knowledgable in every subject from why trees have leaves to the liberal agenda....She lives her her life based on code and dignity.

Now, if you want to discuss political issues Im your man. If you want to try to figure out waste in Middletown, again Im your man. And if you want to slant people or talk trash Im your man once again....I think it wouldnt be in your best interest to go that route. If I start diggin, I go all out...That includes everybody in your circle...just saying...........

Crime Scene Middletown: MiddletownMike Banned From Receiving Township Press Releases

Last week, just after the 4th of July holiday weekend, I was expecting to recieve the latest press release from Middletown Police Detective Lieutenant Steve Dollinger, reporting the recent activities of the Middletown Police. I had noticed that updates for the holiday weekend activities had already been posted on the websites Redbankgreen.com,Middletown Patch and Atlantic Highlands Herald and I was wondering why, after 8 months of receiving the MTPD press releases, I didn't receive the July 5th press release.

I sent an inquiring email to Detective Dollinger that afternoon wondering if I had been somehow overlooked when he had sent the current press release to those on his distribution list. Usually when I have sent an inquiry to the detective I received a prompt response, this time however was different. I never received a response from Detective Dollinger, instead the following day, Wednesday, I received the following email from Middletown Public Information Officer Cindy Herrschaft with no other explanation:

Dear Mr. Morris,

The township has revised the policy regarding the distribution of press releases. Please feel free to check the township website for information updates.

When I received this response coming from Ms. Herrschaft, I was puzzled. I have been receiving press releases for 8 months without any issue and wanted to know why I was now being excluded. I immediately responded by requesting that a copy of both the old policy regarding press releases and the new policy be sent to me so that I could review it. I also stated that no such policy was posted on the Township website for such review. Needless to say, I am still waiting for her response.

After waiting for an answer for almost 24 hours I decided to send an email to Township Administrator Tony Mercantante Thursday afternoon:

Mr. Mercantante,

For the past 8 months I have been receiving MTPD press releases from Detective Dollinger for posting on my Middletown Mike blog. These press releases have been very well received by the readers of the blog and are often the most read feature of the day when posted.

So you can imagine my dismay when I did not receive a press release from this past weekend and subsequent releases issued this week from Detective Dollinger, but found updates on other blogs or websites.

When I sent an inquiry to Detective Dollinger, I did not receive the usual quick response from him that I am accustomed to when I have a question, instead I received an email (below) from Cindy Herrschaft saying that the policy regarding the distribution of press releases had been revised and basically stating that I would not be receiving press releases for the Township anymore for posting.

I responded to Ms. Herrschaft, asking her if she could forward me a copy of the previous press release policy and that of the revised policy, so that I can understand why it seems that I am being singled out from receive township press releases from the MTPD or administration. So far I haven't heard from her and that disturbs me.

If at all possible I would appreciate if you could look into this matter for me and provide me with the simple documents that I requested without having to file an OPRA request.

It would be great if this was just a misunderstanding and my name was taken off Detective Dollinger's contact list by mistake and therefore you could authorize Detective Dollinger to once again include me in his updates.

I appreciate your help in this matter

Again nearly 24 hours pasted without a response, I figured that they were trying to come up with a plausible explanation as why I wasn't to receive press releases any longer because it was becoming evident to me that no such policy documents exsisted.

So as not to be ignored,on Friday I sent yet an other email to the Township, this time to Assistant Administrator James Van Nest:

Mr. Van Nest,

As Assistant Township Administrator I am hoping that you could provide me with an answer to my inquiry below.

It has been two days since I respond to Ms. Herrschaft email notifying me that I have been taken off the contact list and will no longer be receiving Township press releases and almost 1 full day since sending an email inquiry to Mr. Mercantante about it, with no response in return.

I understand that it is the summer and people my have taken off a few days (hence no response from Mr. Mercantante) but I would like to know the true reason why I have been singled out by no longer being a recipient of direct notification of press releases.

In her email Ms. Herrschaft stated that the policy for distributing press releases has been changed. I would like to see in writing what the old policy was and how it differs from the new policy seeing how no such policy is listed on the Township website and that press releases are not always posted there in a timely manner.

Ultimately I would like to be restored to the notification list if possible. If you could be so kind to follow-up on this matter and respond back I would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

They say that the third time is the charm and I suppose in this instance that old adage rang true because a short time afterwards Tony Mercantante finally responded to my emails with the following explanation:

Mr. Morris,

The policy for distributing Press Releases consists of essentially lists that have evolved over time. In order to keep distribution to a manageable magnitude it has been decided that automatic distribution of press releases will be limited to the following:

stablished new organizations and media outlets, whether they be print, online or on air organizations.

Community organizations and homeowners associations that have requested to receive information.

Other governmental agencies and officials.

We are currently reviewing the lists to make sure that all who are on it fall into the categories mentioned above. Blog sites are not included. If you ever become aware of a blog receiving such information automatically, please report it and we will look into it right away. You or anyone else has always the right to request specific information and/or pull it from the web site when it is posted, which is usually within a day.

Tony Mercantante
Township Administrator

That to me was an interesting reply. I responded by stating that I was in disagreement with his response and that it made it clear that there was no written policy in place that specifically dealt with this issue. I pointed out that my blog serves the community as a source of local news and opinion to those that read it and that I believe the township was being arbitrary in it's decision to exclude my blog from directly receiving press releases. At which point Mr. Mercantante replied that all blog would be excluded, not just mine.

I asked him how does the Township differentiate between what is a News site and what isn't and what is constitutes a community group? By definition Blogs and other Social Media outlets are virtually the same and almost impossible to differentiate. Websites such as Middletown Patch, Redbankgreen.com and MiddletownMike are just as much social media outlets as they are news outlets. Any website that allows reader comments to be published in response o columns posted are considered social media.

Thus it doesn't make much sense not to include Blogs or Social Media in the Township's policy, it only makes sense that public information should be disseminated in all possible manners and not excluded for arbitrary assumptions as to what constitutes a news outlet.

Out of further curiosity, I asked Tony Mercantante if Art Gallagher's blog MoreMonmouthMusings, was considered a legitimate news outlet, seeing how often I have seen Middletown press releases on his site well before being posted on the Township's website.

His responded by stating "...we specifically discussed Mr. Gallagher's site and concluded it was a blog and will not be getting automatic distribution of press releases."

At this point in our email exchanges I ended my inquiry but stated that I will be on the look out for evidence to the contrary.

Regardless of Mercantane's explanation and assurances that no other blogs will be included in automatic press release notifications, I can help but think that this petty behavior on the Township's part is in retaliation to negative posts I have published concerning members of the Township Committee. It would not be the first time that the Township Administration tried their hand at childish retaliation against a website.

I was reminded by Carol Schwebel that when Allan Dean, the publisher of the Atlantic Highland Herald, was attempting to help her fight the new Middletown website requirement that users must first register name, address and other personal information before hand to get information, the Administration stopped sending him information as well.

It's just all par for the course I suppose. Why make the system more transparent when you live for it to be opaque? Saying that the reason for such a decision has to do with manageability of lists doesn't cut it, a distribution list is not that hard to manage.

So while the crime of me being officially banned from directly receiving press releases from the Township has been committed, it wont prevent me from lifting press releases from other websites, be it directly off of Middletown web page or others. I wont allow them to intimidate me it such a way. I'll just start posting all the press releases I notice, not just those from the MTDP.

I'll show 'em :-)

Happy Anniversary....To Me

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the MiddleownMike Blog.

This little self-indulgent post marks my 962 blog entry, so I would like to thank all of thoughs who have been loyal readers and contibutors for their support because with them I would have stopped blogging a long while ago.

It has been a long and strange trip indeed, one that I have enjoyed taking and one that others thought would be short and wouldn't last.

So far I have proven the naysayers wrong and I hope to continue to prove them wrong because I know that I have made a difference, not only in Middletown, but throughout Monmouth County and the great State of New Jersey.

In this past year I have had close to 33,000 page views and 19,000 unique visitors, some blogs may boast about having more readers or more influence than this one, which is fine with me, I haven't taken the easy or low road as others have done to make their mark. I have always tried to take the high road and present facts as opposed to presenting fiction and passing it off as insider knowledge.

So, thanks again for your support and continued readership, I am sure that the next 12 months will be just as interesting and fun filled as the last.

Walsh Fights Back Against Petition Recall

PRESS RELEASE
Recall petition: partisanship wrapped around mistruths
MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP (MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ): According to Middletown Democrat for Township Committee Patricia Walsh, she left Middletown Republican Chairman Peter Carton's Republican party because of  "personal attacks, the likes of which he is launching against me right now."

A petition drive, sponsored by Republicans James Cody, Kathleen Bjelka and Anthony Testa,
was begun Oct. 8. The petition erroneously claims that Walsh "accepted a $30,000 gift." In addition, the petition singled out Walsh as having raised  "taxes more than any official in Middletown history." In fact, the petition distored Walsh's record, the candidate said, and is a typical "dirty trick" to distract the good people of Middletown from the real issues, such as taxes and affordability.

"I have in my possession sworn statements in depositions that show the personal loan
made to me by Cathy Sullivan has been repaid in full," Walsh said.

The personal loan referred to by the petition was made when Republican Committeeman Tom
Stokes sued Walsh unsuccessfully for eight years in an attempt to "own what Pat Walsh owns." Stokes used a Republican law firm, which represented him on a contingency basis, to conduct the failed lawsuit. Subsequently, Stokes was awarded a job on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, a well-known breeding ground for cronyism, and a seat on the Middletown Sewerage Authority, which is given by the all-Republican Middletown Committee.

Where it involves her voting record on the school board, Walsh said she has "dutifully participated as a member of that body for 11 years and is proud that she has worked for consensus to improve the education of township children ” as a volunteer. Consequently,
Walsh said she is proud of the quality of education for Middletown's children. "As a group, Middletown's children are some of the best-educated in the country, as testified to by where these kids go to college afterward," Walsh said.

"The real reason for this petition is not because I participated on the school board, or because I won a lawsuit against Tom Stokes," Walsh said. "The reason this petition is going on is because it is likely that, come Election Day, myself and my running mate, Jim Grenafege, are going to join committeemen Patrick Short and Sean Byrnes on the governing body."

Walsh said the Republican-controlled Middletown Committee has "raped the township's
coffers with partisan appointments and cronyism for more than a quarter-century."

Walsh said that Middletown is witnessing the "death rattle" of 27 years of corruption, sponsored principally by Middletown Republican Chairman Peter Carton.

"To put it simply, the way of life for a handful of corrupt local Republican officials is about ready to come to a screeching halt in January, and Mr. Carton and his cronies are fighting it in every way they can—this petition included," Walsh said.

However, despite the scurrilous Republican attacks, Walsh said she will not be deterred in reforming Middletown's government, changing her hometown's approach to spending, or cleaning up the evident corruption that has taken hold of Monmouth's largest municipality.

"It has always been a case where Middletown will get "fixed some other day," " Walsh said. "Well, I have news for Mr. Carton and his flunkies: It's some other day"
