Things Are Looking Brighter

For those of you that woke up yesterday morning, feeling down and out because Middletown Democratic candidate Tricia Maguire, LD13 candidates Sean F. Byrnes, Tom Giaimo and Mariel DiDato and Monmouth County Freeholder candidates Margie Donjon and Brian Wilton did not come out victorious yesterday, cheer up. The Middletown GOP's margin of victory over the Middletown Democrats this year was shrunk by over 4% due in large part by a tremendous GOTV effort this year by numerous volunteers and candidate Tricia Maguire.

While 4% may not seem like much, it was huge! The Middletown Democrats closed the gap from previous elections and shrunk the margins of Republicans countywide. The races in LD 13 and for Freeholder were much closer than in previous years, in large part to the Democratic turn out in Middletown. That means we are moving in the right direction and we have momentum moving forward. Next year is looking brighter already.

In Middletown, all of the Democratic candidates received a minimum of a 1000 votes more than our Governor elect Phil Murphy. This is huge! Especially when you take into consideration that Kim Guadagni received 5000 more votes in Middletown than Phil Murphy.

In hindsight, Murphy's statement about making New Jersey a "sanctuary state", which was drove home constantly by the  Guadagno campaign, not only hurt Murphy in Middletown, but also in northern Monmouth County. It lead to the local Democratic candidates having to answer questions about it, which in turn took away from their messages and caused potential supporters not to vote.

Overall I'm encouraged by Tuesday night's results. Phil Murphy, flaws and all, is the governor elect and Democrat Vin Gopal beat Jennifer Beck to become the new LD11 State Senator. When added to the results in Middletown, where the margins were shrunk even though the Democratic candidates lost, it was a good day. The resistance is strong and the future is bright!

NJ.com: Here's what this late election poll says about the Murphy-Guadagno race for governor

Some good news for Phil Murphy heading into tomorrow's election

From NJ.com:

TRENTON -- Democrat Phil Murphy maintains a double-digit lead over Republican Kim Guadagno in the race to succeed Gov. Chris Christie because she failed to win over enough independent voters, a new poll shows.

Both nominees shored up strong support among their base, according to the latest Quinnipiac University Poll on Tuesday's race, which pegs Murphy at a 12-point lead among likely voters.

That's eight points smaller that the 20-point lead Murphy had in the group's last poll, from Oct. 25.

But Guadagno has two glaring problems.

One is that Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 880,000 people. According to the Division of Elections' latest data, the Democratic Party has also seen its rolls grow by just under 2 percent since January, while the GOP's rolls have stayed flat.

Her second hurdle is that the state's largest voting bloc -- unaffiliated voters -- has shrunk by more than 6 percent since the start of the year, and is split between the two candidates.

All this means that Murphy retains the edge.

Guadagno’s Worrisome Record as Sheriff of Monmouth County

The following was written by former Monmouth County Freeholder John D'Amico and was published last week on Insidernj.com. As we head to the polls tomorrow Kim Guadagno's shady actions as Monmouth County Sheriff should be in voters minds before casting a vote for her:

Kim Guadagno dodges responsibility for the failures of the Christie Administration by alternately hiding behind or blaming the Governor.  But she cannot hide from her record of dishonesty as Monmouth County Sheriff.

Kim Guadagno and Gov. Christie
In 2009, to cover a large budget deficit resulting from the recession, the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders, of which I was a member, froze the wages of non-union county employees and asked the unions to agree to a wage freeze. Failing such an agreement, some union members would have to be laid off.

The Freeholders asked Sheriff Guadagno to persuade the unions representing her sheriff’s officers and corrections officers to accept the freeze.  She refused to cooperate, predicting that the savings anticipated from a wage freeze or offsetting layoffs would be lost because she was going to use overtime to continue running the jail, serve warrants, and discharge other functions.  When invited to comment on her budget at a public meeting, she turned her back on the Freeholders and told the hundreds of union members present that they were right to object to the freeze and the Freeholders were wrong. (Asbury Park Press, 7/21/09).

The Sheriff’s unions rejected the freeze, and fourteen of their least senior members with young families were laid off. In addition, Guadagno laid off process servers who had agreed to the freeze and replaced them with higher paid personnel.  After intervention by the county administrator and attorneys, the process servers were reinstated (APP, 7/27/09).  Despite Guadagno’s machinations, the county ultimately did realize salary and fringe benefit savings in the Sheriff’s budget (APP, 10/1/09).

At her first press conference as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Guadagno said, “I can tell you that I’m probably the only elected public official who had to stand toe-to- toe, eye-to- eye and negotiate with unions.”  The truth is she was playing footsie with them. At a closed Freeholder meeting earlier in the year, the Republican County Administrator and County Counsel had recommended that the Freeholders pull operation of the jail and youth detention center from Guadagno because of “complaints and concerns relative to the …performance of her duties and lack of responsiveness to the Freeholders” and her close alignment with labor unions in opposing payroll cuts. (APP, 9/30/09).

Angered by these episodes, a Republican blogger wrote “it is common knowledge that Guadagno made the union men and women feel as if she was 100%  PRO them. Then after the smoke clears and she is running with Christie she publicly states that she fought hard to suppress the unions she was protecting.  She still makes 110K as sheriff….What do the laid off workers have?  Sheriff Guadagno is a fraud.”  (PA_TH_TIC, 9/30/09).

This history of shady behavior by former Sheriff Kim Guadagno, strikingly similar in many respects to that of President Donald Trump, is worrisome and calls to mind the warning in the following Bible verse: “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” (Luke 16:10, New Living Translation).

CURRIE SLAMS GUADAGNO'S SILENCE ON ASSEMBLYMAN'S EMBRACE OF CONFEDERATE FLAG

[

(picture via Facebook)
Trenton] -- New Jersey State Democratic Chairman John Currie reacted to Republican gubernatorial candidate Kim Guadagno's refusal to condemn Assemblyman Parker Space's recent embrace of the confederate flag:

"Mrs. Guadagno has a long record of enabling bad behavior with her silence and inaction. Our economy, our environment, our schools, our transportation infrastructure, our pension system, and our voting rights have all suffered on her watch. So, it's sad but not surprising that she again sits idly by, refusing to condemn a legislator's embrace of a symbol of southern segregation. One should not need to see the photo to know it's inappropriate. And it begs the question: If she won't stand up and condemn racism, will she stand for anything?"

Shameless Plug

Available on newstands now is the latest edition of the Two Rivers Times. I was interviewed by reporter John Burton and asked my opinion on this year's upcoming election. Specially, what I thought the roll of Monmouth County would play in this year's Governor's race between Phil Murphy (Middletown) and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno (Monmouth Beach), both Monmouth County residents. And whether or not this years' governor's race, only 1 of 2 in the nation this year - the other being Virginia, would garner any national attention and/or be seen as a referendum on Chris Christie or Donald Trump.

The article won't be available online until next week so make sure you pick up a copy at a store near you.

If He Runs For President Will Christie Be Forced To Quit As Governor?

Why hasn't anyone talked about before?

On his show this past Sunday, Steve Kornacki, host of MSNBC's UP w/ Steve Kornacki, outlined Chris Christie’s potential predicament he will find himself in if he plans to run for President in 2016. If Christie declares his candidacy for President after being reelected as NJ Governor this fall, it is extremely likely he would have to resign as governor so that he could raise campaign funds from Wall Street firms.

As a "result of two federal rules, one from the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board dating back nearly two decades and the other from the SEC in 2011, that drastically curb the ability of employees of Wall Street firms to donate to governors seeking federal office and of the uniquely broad appointment powers that come with the New Jersey governorship. Put together, they have the potential to prevent Christie from raising millions of dollars from a cash-rich sector – the financial services industry – that has been particularly enthusiastic about him."

According to a new book written by Dan Balz,“Collision 2012”, Mitt Romney was very concerned about this issue last year when he courted Christie to be his vice-presidential running mate. When Romney asked Christie if he would resign as governor to be on his ticket, Christie laughed not realizing that Romney was serious - when Christie refused Romney turned to Paul Ryan.

Kornacki wrote about all this yesterday on Salon.com, it's an interesting read that New Jerseyan's should take a look at before deciding to vote for Chris Christie again in November,  it's a potential game changer. If Christie runs for President and resigns one year after reelection than essentially, voters will be voting for Lt. Governor Kim Guadagon to be NJ's next governor, not Christie!
