Letter: No Need For Jersey "Home Rule"

The expressed opinions or views of this letter does not necessarily represent the opinion of the MiddletownMike blog:

Dear Editor,

Time and time again, "Home Rule" has resulted in New Jersey municipalities wasting huge sums of taxpayer money duplicating services. The fact that the nine municipalities on Long Beach Island (Ocean County) have nine police chiefs, is a good example of this mismanagement.

There is no need for "Home Rule" in a state like New Jersey, which is very small and has many regions where one can cross multiple municipal boundaries within a five minute drive.

Localized democracy as a concept is a good idea. But "Home Rule" has become the excuse for the continued existence of 565 corrupt, insular and inept municipal fiefdoms where nepotism and cronyism has the force and effect of law, at public expense.

Let's move local government to the county level and put transparency above mismanaged municipal tradition.
