LONG BRANCH, NJ – On Saturday, September 29th , at 10:00 a.m., Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. (NJ-06) will be hosting a U.S. Service Academy Day at Naval Weapons Station Earle, Leonardo Pier Complex. The event will provide a forum for students who are interested in attending one of our nation’s prestigious U.S. Service Academies to learn more about the process for admission.

The event will focus on the admissions process, steps to obtaining a congressional nomination, and lifestyles as Cadets or Midshipmen at the academies. Interested students will have the opportunity to personally meet and speak with representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and ROTC programs from Rutgers University.

“Our nation’s service academies are some of the highest caliber institutions committed to graduating leaders of character, honor and integrity,” said Congressman Pallone. “Graduates are selflessly prepared to assume some of the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government. By hosting this U.S. Service Academy Day, it is my hope that we will inspire young people of the 6th Congressional District to come and explore the many opportunities that our academies have to offer.”

Letter: Military Toxic Waste In Middletown

Dear Editor,

The Department of Defense is America’s biggest polluter.

It is known that locations such as the now-closed Fort Monmouth and it's earlier shuttered Camp Evans contain some levels toxic waste from military projects of the past, when record keeping and safety protocols were much different than today. So far, nothing located has been deemed in excess of “safe” levels.

But as these locations begin to be further adapted to civilian use, it is important we have a full picture of what contaminants are actually there.

Independent contractors should be hired by the State of New Jersey to locate any previously unknown chemical or radiological materials present at these locations, to protect the public from potential exposure to unknown contaminants.

Still active military locations such as the Naval Weapons Station Earle and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst should be prioritized for contaminant identification and environmental remediation, to protect both the safety of the civilian public and military families.

The people of Middletown, Colts Neck, Tinton Falls and Lakehurst should begin asking more questions of their active military neighbor's environmental practices.

On Saturday, September 22, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) hosted his annual Academy Day at Naval Weapons Station Earle, Leonardo Pier Complex. Turnout exceeded expectations, with 200 guests attending. The event provided a forum for students who are interested in attending one of the country’s prestigious U.S. Service Academies.

Representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy provided information on the admissions process, steps to obtaining a Congressional nomination, and lifestyles as Cadets or Midshipmen at the academies. CAPT D.J. (Fuzz) Harrison, Commanding Officer of Naval Weapons Station Earle, delivered opening remarks on the importance of serving the country.

“It is a great honor nominating outstanding students every year from my District to attend America’s service academies and I want to ensure our young men and women have the information they need to apply,” said Pallone “It is inspiring to hold Academy Day and see so many remarkable young people eager to serve their country.”
