Pallone Statement on President Trump’s Decision to Release Nunes Memo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2, 2018

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) released the following statement on the release of the Nunes memo.

“I am appalled that the President of the United States has declassified intelligence in order to attack and slander dedicated public servants and members of our intelligence community. The partisan memo uses intelligence out of context to distort the truth and push the administration’s various conspiracy theories. I find it disgusting that our President is more interested in attacking the FBI than getting to the bottom of Russian interference in our elections.

“Make no mistake, the release of this memo is an attempt by the President to deflect from the fact that he has obstructed justice on multiple occasions during the investigation into his campaign and administration and Russia. It is an attempt to deflect that multiple members of Trump world have lied about their involvement with Russia and face prosecution and prison time. We cannot allow President Trump to stop the Mueller investigation and various Congressional investigations from finding the truth and I will do everything within my power to ensure that Congress holds President Trump accountable. “

Congressman Pallone Statement on Firing of FBI Director James Comey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 9, 2017

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) released the following statement on the firing of FBI Director James Comey.
“The firing of James Comey is the latest, and perhaps most clear, example of the Trump administration's actions to impede accountability and transparency.‎ We now need not only a fully independent investigation into President Trump's ties with Russia, but an inquiry into his unprecedented decision to replace the Director of the FBI. My fear is that the Trump administration is trying to prevent Director Comey from revealing it's involvement with Russia and other improprieties."

Letter: ASSATA SHAKUR AND THE IRA

The expressed opinions or views of this letter does not necessarily represent the opinion of the MiddletownMike blog:

When the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) prisoners in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh went on Hunger Strike in 1981, the New Jersey State Assembly followed up by honoring the IRA Hunger Striker Bobby Sands MP, after his death, with a resolution highlighting his courage and commitment.

New Jersey's Irish-American community and supporters stand in solidarity with Assata Shakur and the Black Liberation Army's objectives to achieve civil rights and freedom for African-Americans. Like the Royal Ulster Constabulary, which was found to have targeted Catholics for unfair treatment, the NJ State Police admitted to racial profiling and discrimination during a settlement with the Department of Justice in the late 1990s.

Assata Shakur was granted asylum in Cuba in the 1980s after escaping from a NJ prison where she was held after being convicted of murdering a state trooper, in a racist highly questionable case that lacked evidence such as gunpowder residue, among other inconsistencies with the government's tall tale. Assata had previously framed in numerous other cases she was later acquitted of, as part of FBI's COINTELPRO program.

The New Jersey State Police recently put out Assata's name on another NJ Most Wanted Hitlist.

The Irish community just celebrated the centennial of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, where James Connolly advocated independence, equality, and social democracy.

But in 2016, we must rise in solidarity with Assata here in New Jersey and force the State of New Jersey to keep their "Hands off Assata".

"Tiocfaidh ár lá" and "All Power to the People" define a common global struggle.

Governor Christie needs to shut his mouth and stop harassing Assata Shakur.

Monmouth Republican Leader and Manalapan Mayor Andrew Lucas Arrested Today

For Immediate Release:
February 7, 2014

The following is a statement from Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal regarding news today of the 11 count indictment of former Manalapan Mayor and Republican Party Leader Andrew Lucas.

Mayor Andrew Lucas
"Today, we see yet another example of corruption from the Monmouth County Republican Party. Former Manalapan mayor Andrew Lucas is in federal custody today on an 11 count indictment for fraud, identity theft and obstruction of justice, among other charges.

The scandal involves the use of taxpayer funded programs for a land deal that funneled $1.2 Million dollars directly into the pockets of Lucas - with the help of the local and County Republican politicians. In order to receive the money, the deal was approved by the Republican controlled Monmouth County Freeholder Board.

We demand answers from Freeholder Board and especially career politician Lillian Burry, who endorsed and voted to approve the deal. Burry raised thousands of dollars at a fundraiser sponsored by Lucas on the very property that was up for consideration by the Freeholder Board.

We need change on the Freeholder Board in order to stop the pattern of corruption and taxpayer abuse.

Anthrax, Now Ricin

The following is from Congressman Rush Holt's newsletter:

You no doubt remember the atmosphere of fear and even panic in mid-September 2001 as 22 people contracted anthrax from letters mailed to news outlets and to Congress. People died then – two postal employees and three other innocent citizens. Those troubling days returned to my mind last week when we learned that the deadly poison ricin had been found in letters mailed to the Senate and to President Obama. Fortunately, no one has died this time.

The manner in which these letters were discovered shows that our nation has, at least, learned one lesson from the anthrax attacks: Both letters were opened and tested in off-site mail facilities set up after the anthrax attacks. Yet I am troubled that other lessons remain unlearned.

How could the FBI have responded more appropriately in the immediate aftermath of the anthrax attacks? Did the FBI truly build a sound scientific and criminal case against Bruce Ivins, the suspect held responsible for the attacks? Is the government’s current response to the ricin attacks repeating errors of the past?

I have previously offered legislation that would create a special commission, modeled after the 9/11 Commission, to investigate the anthrax attacks and determine what lessons we can learn still. As last week’s poisoned mailings demonstrate, the need for answers remains.

For security reasons, all letters sent to Congress since 2001 undergo intensive screening that can take days or weeks to complete. Should you ever wish to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me at holt.house.gov/contact to ensure your message reaches me without delay.

Lautenberg Highlights Additional News Corp. Hacking Allegation in the U.S. as DOJ Review Begins

Lautenberg Flagged News Corp. Hacking Allegations with Federal Authorities in 2005

WASHINGTON—As the Justice Department reviews claims that News Corp. hacked into the phone records or voicemails of American 9/11 victims, U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) today wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller to highlight a 2005 hacking allegation in the United States that was made against a News Corp. marketing company called News America Marketing.

Lautenberg originally wrote a letter in 2005 bringing this case to the attention of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales after a small New Jersey marketing company called FLOORgraphics alleged that News America Marketing engaged in illegal computer espionage by breaking into password protected computer systems and obtaining confidential information.

“As the Department of Justice and FBI examine the recent hacking allegations involving News Corp. and its subsidiaries more closely, I wanted to make sure that you were fully aware of the case of FLOORgraphics and News America, as it may be relevant to your current investigation,” Lautenberg wrote.

Rush Holt Newsletter: Reducing Medical Errors

The following newsletter was issued Monday by the office of Congressman Rush Holt and sent to his many constituents in the 12th Congressional District via email. As usual, it has a lot of good information and show that Holt is on top of a wide array of issues that are of a concern to residents in his district:

Ten years ago the Institute of Medicine issued To Err is Human, a ground-breaking report that estimated that as many as 98,000 people died each year in U.S. hospitals because of medical errors. This staggering statistic, which is higher than the number of deaths due to traffic accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS, helped launch the modern patient safety movement.

In 2005, Congress passed the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act, which created patient safety organizations that share information about medical errors, adverse events, and “near misses” without fear of litigation. New Jersey has created a patient safety organization, the Institute for Quality and Patient Safety, which has successfully limited infections in intensive care units, reduced pressure ulcers, and helped hospitals implement medical emergency teams. Another key outcome of the patient safety movement has been greater transparency. Several new websites provide useful resources for patients considering health care options and hospital performance, including New Jersey Hospital Care Compare, the national Hospital Compare, and the New Jersey Hospital Performance Report.

Yet more work is required to improve patient safety. New research is needed to understand what treatments work best for different conditions. New incentives are needed to get coordinated medical care. New support is needed to encourage more hospitals to adopt the information technology systems that record a patient’s allergies and medical history.

Tuesday’s Telephone Town Hall

Last Tuesday, I hosted a telephone town hall meeting with Central New Jersey residents, where we discussed the numerous challenges facing our country, including job creation, health care reform, and energy sustainability. If you missed it, you can listen to a recording of it here. Town hall participants also were able to take part in interactive polls, including one where I asked how they get their health coverage. The results of this non-scientific survey were private insurance – 59 percent; Medicare – 37 percent; no coverage – 2 percent; uncertain – 2 percent; and Medicaid – 1 percent.

I will be holding another telephone town hall on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:45 p.m. If you would like to join the telephone town hall and automatically receive a call on February 9, please fill out the form on my home page.

Beware of Haiti Relief Scams

On Wednesday, I spoke on the House floor paying tribute to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. You can watch the speech here.

As I previously wrote, the American people time and time again have demonstrated tremendous generosity in response to tragedy. Unfortunately, such times also feature scam artists trying to take advantage of such generosity. The FBI issued a “Haitian Earthquake Relief Fraud Alert” which advises Internet users to adhere to certain guidelines, including avoiding unsolicited emails and verifying the legitimacy of a non-profit.

Sincerely,

RUSH HOLT
Member of Congress

P.S. Just a reminder: I always want to hear from you, but please don’t reply to this e-mail. Instead, please email me through my website at www.holt.house.gov, or call me at 1-87-RUSH-HOLT (1-877-874-4658) to let me know what's on your mind. FBI Opens Financial Fraud Investigations

Think Progress

The FBI has opened investigations into Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, and AIG, looking into whether “fraud helped cause some of the troubles” at these financial institutions. According to the FBI, these probes “are part of an effort to pursue allegations of higher-level fraud more sweeping than the retail-level infractions that have been at the center of most cases brought so far.”
