Earth Day 2017

We need to take care of the Earth, it's the only planet that we have.

"The earth does not argue,
Is not pathetic, has no arrangements,
Does not scream, haste, persuade, threaten, promise,
Makes no discriminations, has no conceivable failures,
Closes nothing, refuses nothing, shuts none out,
Of all the powers, objects, states, it notifies, shuts none out."

Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass," 1855

"There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

Carl Sagan

“It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.”

Neil Armstrong

VOX: 7 things we've learned about ‎Earth‬ since the last ‎Earth Day

1) Scientists just discovered an entirely new, 600-mile-long coral reef at the mouth of the Amazon

2) We've discovered dozens of new species — as well as a few thought to be extinct

3) Earth has 3 trillion trees — far more than we thought

4) We discovered homo naledi, a new species of ancient human that once roamed the Earth

5) Unicorns and humans once coexisted. (Albeit really ugly unicorns.)

6) West Antarctica's ice sheet could melt faster than anyone thought

7) We also learned that humans are capable of cooperating on climate change

NASA Celebrates Earth Day

NASA uses the vantage point of space to increase our understanding of our home planet, improve lives and safeguard our future. The agency also develops new ways to observe and study Earth's interconnected natural systems with long-term data records, shares this unique knowledge, and works with institutions around the world to gain new insights into how our planet is changing. Here's a brief thirty second video showing some of the sights and sounds of our Earth and why it's important to us all to appreciate our unique home in the solar system.

President Obama's Weekly Address 4/18/15: Climate Change Can No Longer Be Ignored

WASHINGTON, DC — In this week’s address, the President spoke about his commitment to combatting the threat of climate change and to keeping ourselves and future generations safe. The effects of climate change can no longer be denied or ignored – 2014 was the planet’s warmest year recorded, and 14 of the 15 hottest years on record have happened this century. Climate change poses risks to our national security, our economy, and our public health. The President has already taken historic steps to address climate change, but there’s more that the United States and the international community can do. That’s why next Wednesday, on Earth Day, in the latest part of his effort to call attention to and act on the threat of climate change, the President will visit the Florida Everglades and speak about the threat that climate change poses to our economy and to the world.

The Earth is our playground; Middletown is our home. On Saturday, April 26, 2014

From Middletown Alerts:

Head over to Poricy Park for a morning of fun, games, and education as we kick off the Township's Grazing Goats project! In order to go back to the simpler and more eco-friendly times, we will now be using goats as our biological lawn mowers! A small goat pen, separate from the grazing area, will be featured at Earth Day to give visitors the opportunity to personally interact with the goats, learn about their habits, and most importantly educate visitors about the problem of invasive plants and benefits of native vegetation.

The Township's Grazing Goats project is made possible by a Sustainable Jersey $10,000 Small Grant. The goats will work in teams within a double-fenced, 2-acre area at Poricy Park to remove invasive vegetation. They will be hard at work, grazing over the subject area during the 2014 Spring and Summer. Volunteers will maintain their daily water supply while the farmer will provide a safe environment for the goats and park users.

Invasive plants and species kill the native plants that create vegetative diversity within Middletown’s beautiful parks. With the help of our goat friends, the invasive plants and species will flee our beautifully diverse home.

Other events for the day include a “Touch-a-Truck” display of a variety of Public Works vehicles including our brand new CNG truck, displays by Clean Communities, the Middletown Environmental Commission, the Middletown Green Team, an informative hike by Poricy Park, and crafts for the kids! So come and join us for a day of fun from 10:30 am to 1:30 PM at Poricy Park Conservancy, 345 Oak Hill Rd, Red Bank (GPS)

Let the Earth Day Festivities Begin!

Dear Ocean-Monmouth Friends,

It feels like spring has finally sprung! And just in time for an Earth Day (err, Earth week) celebration. Check out the full list of activities coming up and I hope you can join us as we celebrate this beautiful planet we call home!

EARTH DAY RALLY:
OPPOSING THE PINELANDS PIPELINE & BL ENGLAND PLANT
Join us on on Earth Day as we stand together in opposition to the Pinelands pipeline and the air and water pollution spewing from the BL England power plant. In January the Pinelands Commission REJECTED this dirty energy deal and now politicians and fossil fuel interests are attempting to circumvent the democratic process and strong arm this ill-conceived project through. We cannot allow that to happen! Stand with us as we rally in support for New Jersey's clean energy future and our opposition to more dirty fossil fuels through this pristine Pinelands region.

When: Tuesday, April 22nd at 12:30pm

Where: Beesley's Point Beach, Harbor Rd, Marmona, NJ
(this is a public beach located next to the Tuckahoe Inn)
Following the Rally there will be a series of teach-ins from 1:15pm to 2:30pm focusing on different aspects of the pipeline battle:
-          BL England's permits and litigation against the plant
-          The ecology of the Pinelands region
-          Fossil fuel pollution and climate change
-          Cumulative Impacts of Natural Gas Infrastructure: from fracking to pipeline construction

Film Screenings:
Groundswell Rising: Protecting Our Children's Air & Water

Emmy Award-winning Resolution Pictures captures the passion of people across the country who are engaged in a David and Goliath confrontation with the oil & gas industry. Be inspired as they stand together and challenge a system that promotes profit over health. In the film, we meet mothers, fathers, scientists, doctors, farmers and people from all sides of the political spectrum taking a hard look at energy extraction techniques that are not proven to be safe. With the oil & gas industry's expansion of fracking seen as a moral issue, this provocative documentary tracks a people's movement, a groundswell rising towards reason and sensitivity, to protect life, today and tomorrow. This "must see" film will be playing at 2 locations.
Join us at a screening near you!

When: Saturday, April 26th at 2:00pm
Where: Toms River Public Library, Mancini Hall
101 Washington St, Toms River, NJ 08753
Feel free to share the event page with friends: https://www.facebook.com/events/272595242901040

When: SundayApril 27th at 4:00pm
Where: Waterspirit, Stella Maris Retreat Center
981 Ocean Ave, Long Branch, NJ 07740
Feel free to share the event page with friends: https://www.facebook.com/events/741508035881823
Both screenings will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on actions being taken here in New Jersey to protect our state from toxic fracking waste. There is a $10 suggested donation to help cover the costs of making the film. (Flyers for both films are attached.)
Sponsored by: Clean Water Action, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Food & Water Watch, and the New Jersey Sierra Club

Chasing Ice

This award winning documentary tells the story of National Geographic photographer James Balog's mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of climate change. Using time-lapse cameras, his videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. Enjoy the spectacular beauty of the photography and see the reality of the effects of climate change.

If you haven't seen this film yet, you don't want to miss it! I've seen it twice and can't wait to see it again - the story is brilliantly told and the cinematography will take your breath away!

When: April 29th at 2:00pm AND 7:00pm
Where: Waterspirit, Stella Maris Retreat Center
981 Ocean Ave, Long Branch, NJ 07740
Discussion to follow the film. This is a free public screening and ice cream will be served! (Flyer attached.)

Sponsored by: Waterspirit, Sierra Club, and Food & Water Watch

One of the best ways to grow a movement is to spread the word and enlighten others, so please feel free to invite and share these event details with family, friends, neighbors, and any other local activists that may be interested in attending!

I hope you can join us for any and/or all of these wonderfully uplifting, engaging, and inspiring events.

Onward,
Lauren

Earth Day Letter: U.S. should take lead in creating low-carbon economy

This letter appears today in the Asbury Park Press:

Earth Day is a good time to be reminded that all of us on this planet share the “global commons.”

Peer-reviewed climate scientists such as in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report agree we must reduce the greenhouse gasses that cause dangerous climate disruption. Staying with Business as Usual is not going to get us off the path to more “global weirding” as climate scientist Dr. Katherine Hayhoe calls it.

Given the global nature of the challenge, I was surprised at Eugene Robinson’s concluding remark in his recent commentary (“On climate, business as usual,” April 18,). He said that if China’s leaders begin to transition to renewable energy, maybe the world has a chance.

My question is: since when does the United States of America wait for someone else to take the lead?

If the U.S. would lead the way to a new low-carbon economy, other countries would follow.

Furthermore, American innovation and enterprise would benefit our economy and increase good, long-term jobs.

We can act in our own national interest while leading the way to a safer “global commons” for all.
