Surgeon Academy Offers Snow Removal Tips

Rosemont, IL – The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons is advising people to be cautious when removing snow this winter.

More than 40,000 people were injured shoveling snow or using snow blowers in 2012, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. For safe shoveling, AAOS suggests:

  • Push the snow. If you must lift it, take small amounts and lift by squatting with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight.
  • Do not throw snow over your shoulder or to the side because the twisting motion could harm your back.
  • Start clearing snow before it becomes heavy and packed.
  • Take breaks and drink fluids to prevent dehydration.

When using a snow blower, the academy recommends the following:

  • Follow instructions.
  • Never stick your hands or feet in the snow blower. Stop the engine and use an object to clear any jams.
  • Do not leave a running snow blower unattended.
  • Keep children 15 and younger away from the snow blower when it is in use.
