More than 40,000 people were injured shoveling snow or using snow blowers in 2012, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. For safe shoveling, AAOS suggests:
- Push the snow. If you must lift it, take small amounts and lift by squatting with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight.
- Do not throw snow over your shoulder or to the side because the twisting motion could harm your back.
- Start clearing snow before it becomes heavy and packed.
- Take breaks and drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
When using a snow blower, the academy recommends the following:
- Follow instructions.
- Never stick your hands or feet in the snow blower. Stop the engine and use an object to clear any jams.
- Do not leave a running snow blower unattended.
- Keep children 15 and younger away from the snow blower when it is in use.
