“Weekend in Old Monmouth” offers free tour of historical sites

By  Linda Baum

Any history buffs out there?  This coming weekend, you have an opportunity to see a lot of history in a concentrated period of time.

On May 5th and 6th, you can take advantage of a free self-guided tour of the numerous historical sites throughout Monmouth County, including museums, Victorian homes, churches, farms, lighthouses, revolutionary sites, and a working gristmill.  What makes this event special is that all 40 tour sites are open the same hours and admission is free.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Thanks go to the Monmouth County Historical Commission for organizing the tour and preparing the tour booklet and map, which you can link to here or pick up at any site on the tour.  http://visitmonmouth.com/page.aspx?ID=3464

The tour is organized into 4 color-coded sub-tours by geographic area to allow for the most efficient use of your time, but you can also make a personal tour in line with your own interests, visiting just those sites that appeal to you.

Here’s a link to the County’s press release for more information about this event.  Enjoy.  http://co.monmouth.nj.us/PressDetail.aspx?ID=1101

This is a special once-a-year event, so help spread the word. If you are on facebook, go to the Monmouth County government facebook site where there is a promotional message on the front page and "share" it so the message may reach your friends:

For those who wish to stay close to home, there are 6 sites in Middletown and many more in bordering towns. Have fun.

A GOOD TIP: While many of the sites have frequent open hours, others are infrequently open. The tour booklet gives their regular times. Thus, one way to plan one's day or weekend is to see the places that are not often open.
