11th District Assembly Candidate Vin Gopal, issued the an email (printed below) to friends and supporters this morning denouncing the ugly and unsubstantiated claims of his Republican opponent Mary Pat Angelini.
The Angelini campaign sent out an inflammatory and inaccurate campaign flyer to constituents after Gopal won the endorsement of the Asbury Park Press. The questionable campaign mailer insinuated that Gopal had been involved in money laundering and other corrupt activities while earning college credits, working as an intern, for former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas, who pleaded guilty to and was convicted of numerous campaign fraud charges and lying to federal investigators.
To claim that a 20 year old college student, working on a campaign as an intern to earn credits towards graduation, is somehow tainted and corrupt himself is a new low and shows how desperate some are to hold onto power.
But my opponents are running an ugly campaign. They’re accusing me of being a party boss, of laundering money, of deep political corruption…for a job I had for college credit when I was 20 years old. That’s a desperate tactic—the incumbents are spending tens of thousands of special interest dollars trying to ruin me because they know that Monmouth County voters are ready for a real change.
I’m not upset that they’re attacking me. They wouldn’t be doing it if they weren’t worried. But this proves what I’ve been saying all along. My opponents are a part of a Trenton system more committed to reelection than protecting middle class families. They’re willing to poison the dialogue and destroy reputations if that means that they can hold on to their cushy jobs, funded by lobbyists and PACs who are interested only in their bottom line.
We need new people in Trenton. People like my running mates and I who are committed to incentivizing small businesses and restoring property tax rebates. Our campaign isn’t built on special interests, so we have no favors to pay back. We’re committed to the middle class because we are a part of it. That’s why our priorities will never change—because the policies that hurt regular people will injure us as well.
Can you help me push back against my opponents’ slander? Can you forward this email to every voter you know? We have just seven day left to get the word out that for the first time in a long time Monmouth County voters have the opportunity choose leaders committed to them.
With your help, we can make a real change for the better on November 8th.
Sincerely,
Vin Gopal
PS The incumbents are going to desperate lengths to destroy my reputation and our hope for change in Monmouth. We have to get the word out to stop them. Will you help me by forwarding this email to your friends, telling people about this election and signing up to volunteer?

Not in Vin's district but live in another district where the vicious mail and rhetoric from the Republicans runs rampart. As an independent who votes for whom I believe will serve me best, I would not vote for any candidate who tries to mislead the voters with the slanderous crap,or the lies or the distortions.
The Republicans in Middletown, where I am a voter, are masters of the usual distortions ,outrageous untruths, fabrications and outlandish personal attacks.
No voter should be mislead by this behavior....it clearly demonstrates how unqualified any one using these tactics is to hold public office.
Restore civility to government and disregard any candidate( of any party affiliation) who employs slander and character assassination as a tool in any campaign for any elected position.
Plain and simple...if they do it, don't vote for them !!!
Vin Gopal was the campaign manager for Joseph Vas. Do a search on the internet. Gopal was all over that campaign. Isn't Vas in jail? You mean to tell me Gopal as campaign manager knew nothing. Not going to drink that kool-ade. Gopal is not the character needed. Think Ethics, I do not believe he has the ethics to be a Legislator.
A powerful letter, Vin, and beautifully said. I hope residents of the 11th district realize how lucky they are to have someone as ethical and as dedicated to their interests as you are.
Cheerleader at 12:36 p.m......your typical rhetoric and it's disgusting.
Why don't you revise you repeated dialogue because we all know it when we see it,Brownsugar,Villagegreener.legion, imemine, stopthe socialists,dig1129,jetfan69 ans on and on.and on.
Pedal your dirt bombs on MMM or shut your mouth. Character assassination is a disgraceful tactic.
Maybe the time has come to do a job on you!!!
This is so typical of the GOP. If you can't find dirt on your opponent, make it up.
It's at the local level and goes right up to the national level.
Maybe they're desperate. I hope it backfires.
Even the NY Times acknowledges Gopal as Vas' campaign manager:

5:54 anonymous;
Who cares, you are slinging mud and character assassination again.
Can't you ever see the error of your ways with your vicious mouth and slander??
Are they paying you by the hour...these unsavory Republicans ???
Now you are messing in another district....go visit Gallagher,he's the only one who would be glad to hear from you.
Birds of a feather roost together!!
So is mentioning that Vin Gopal was Joe Vas' campaign manager "mud slinging" and "character assassination"?
As for Joe Vas's indictment and sentence, that's public information.
Chris,
By themselves no it isn't mudslinging but when you combine the allegations with the horrendous mail piece it is worse than just simple mudslinging, it is nearly slanderous.
Regardless of what was reported on the very last line of a dubious 5 year old NY Times article, I find it improbable that a standing mayor would have a 20 year old college kid as his campaign manager.
It is also a charge thatthe Vin Gopal denies.
Not everything you read in the newspapers is accurate, the NY Times is no exception.
.
I just googled his name and there are plenty of
articles of him referring to himself as campaign manager and articles where the writer also indicates he was campaign manager and quoted him as being campaign
manager of Vas. So you are upset with truths? and public records ? Why?
It seems like every time a political hack on either side can't point to one thing they have done for the people they represent they revert to name calling. It happened to Clinton and it is happening right now to Cain from Perry. If you feel you are losing call the other person a Commie, a Fascist, gay, a criminal, Un-American etc. Pretty damn lame on both sides
At least Vin is not stooping to that level. I am glad that he is not bringing up the incident a while back when Casagrande was a profesional linebacker for the LA Rams.
Here is a question, Who drinks more Beck or Beck? Red Bank is a popular place.
That flyer was disgraceful and intentionally deceitful. The R candidates should do the decent thing and apologize to Mr. Gopal.
They had better hope that voters in the district are in a forgiving mood after trying to be deceived by the authors of that crap.

: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
: Friday, March 24th 2006
: THE FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT FROM VIN GOPAL, CAMPAIGN MANAGER FOR DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE JOSEPH VAS
: "In a recent poll conducted by The Jersey Journal and New Jersey City University, 78.6% of Hudson County respondents were undecided on who they will support in the open 13th District Democratic Primary Election between Perth Amboy Mayor and Assemblyman Joseph Vas, a lifelong Democrat, and West New York Mayor/Assemblyman Albio Sires, a recent Democrat.
: The Jersey Journal polled just Hudson County. In Mr. Sires' own home county, 78.6% of the respondents were undecided on who they plan to support."
The issue is not whether Mr. Gopal was or was not Vas's campaign manager. The issue is that an intentionally deceitful and misleading ad/flyer was sent to voters of the 11th district with the clear intent to falsly convey the message that Mr. Gopal had done something wrong. Only the naivest of the naive would believe anything else.
The low life of the Republican party in Monmouth County are at it again.
Do anything,slander,cheat,lie,distort.....you name it they employ it.
Voters,do not trust anyone who thinks this is an ethical practice. They do not deserve your vote !
Why didn’t GOPAL disclose it on his campaign trail? Why not disclose his political experience when telling of his past & experiences to the voters? He intentionally did not tell. Intention to deceive, is how most look at it.
For you to pretend it’s not wrong is naive and questionable.
From todays APP:
http://www.app.com/article/20111105/NJOPINION01/311050009/Decency-absent-GOP-mailing
"Although the ad was produced by the Republican State Committee, Casagrande and Angelini both signed off on it. And, on Friday, both said they stood by it. That’s almost as disturbing as the mailer itself, which tried through deliberate misdirection to suggest that Gopal was mixed up in a campaign money laundering and fraud scheme."
NO.Anon 6:07.
What is clearly evident here is that the Republicans in this county in recent years are capable of any filthy, dirty tactic in order to win.
Disgraceful, that's what is and these tactics should disqualify anyone using them....anyone !!!
This conduct displays a total lack of ethics or integrity. Imagine how much these bottom feeding Republicans really give a damn about the voter once they have your vote. They'll tell you to go sr*** yourself quicker than you can imagine. They have clearly demonstrated the caliber of individuals that they really are and that ain't commendable. That's for damn sure!!
Reject them as legitimate candidates!!!!
Lack of civility at election time is like an epidemic of disease....a cancer that we must get rid of. Do not vote for those who lie, distort or cheat in order to get your vote.
THEY DO NOT DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT> WHAT THEY DESERVE IS YOUR WRATH!
Disgusting and repulsive!!
Next the D's will be peddling the ex-cons on us. It sure opened my eyes. Voters have a right to know who they are voting for. Vin Gopal should have told his background and let the voter's then decide for themselves. If it were over 10-15 years ago, I could possibly understand not thinking it was relevant. But 6 years ago, he should have told his full history, not just the I'm a small business owner, leaving out his current political history. All job applications want past 10 years experience disclosed. If I was hiring someone and they left out that information, it would make me wonder, and the next applicant disclosed I'd hire the 2nd applicant.
