February 17, 2015 Middletown Township Committee Meeting

The video of the February 17th Middletown Township Committee meeting is now available for viewing, the meeting lasted less than 30 minutes.

The highlights include:

The swearing in of a new police officer and new auxiliary police officers and a life saving award was presented to two men.

Three new ordinances were adopted to allow liquor license establishments to be located within 500 feet of each other, allow the police force to patrol the new Sloan Kettering property and reduce the fees for returned checks.

It was learned that the township has been overcharging for returned checks for years. Nobody on the governing body, nor the township attorney could say when the state passed this law that established fees for returned checks and did not consider compensating those who were charge excess fees over the years for they did not think there were ever any checks returned.

Four new ordinances were introduced and will have public hearings and votes for adoption on March 16.

Committee Comments begin at 23:26 - Neither Tony Fiore or Kevin Settembrino had any thoughts to share. Steve Massell still doesn't have an original thought in his head stating that he "Echoes" everything that Gerry Scharfenberger had said.

Public Comments begin at 27:30 -  only one member of the public to speak.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Outpatient Facility Coming to Middletown

MIDDLETOWN – Construction of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s 285,000-square-foot outpatient cancer treatment facility located at the former Lucent building on Red Hill Road is getting into full swing.

State, county and local officials and MSK leaders gathered at the site Thursday to mark the start of the project. The Mayor and Township Committee were in attendance along with New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, and Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholder Tom Arnone.

“The response from the community upon hearing Memorial Sloan Kettering is moving into town has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic. MSK is synonymous with elite care and cutting edge technology and research in the cancer field worldwide,” said Mayor Stephanie C. Murray. “Not only will this facility provide critical care, it will generate jobs and stimulate economic growth in the local community. We welcome Memorial Sloan Kettering to the Middletown and look forward to seeing the facility in full operation.”

MSK Monmouth is slated to open in late 2016. Services will include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic and interventional radiology, outpatient surgery, clinical research trials, oncology rehabilitation, social work services, nutritional counseling, and support programs.

MSK Monmouth will reduce the need and burden for most patients to travel into Manhattan by allowing them to receive care closer to where they live. Currently, more than 6 percent of MSK patients live in the areas that will be served by this state-of-the-art cancer care facility.

9-6-12 Township Committee Meeting

There was another meeting of the Middletown Township Committee last week. The monthly workshop meeting took place on September 6th and unlike previous meetings fthus far this year, which have lasted less than 45 minutes, this one lasted an hour and and actually had some news come out of it.    Here are the highlights: 

• Township Planner Jason Greenspan gave a discription of the zoning change for the Red Hill Rd. office site. Sloan-Ketering wants to occupy the site with outpatient services like a surgical center, cancer treatment center and offices. He suggested reviewing other ofice facilities around town so medical facilites will come in to occupy them.
• Jason Greenspan explained that since the Township bought 2 garbage trucks that run on natural gas a filling facility will be installed at Kanes Ln. He said NJNG wants to install a regional facility there to accomodate other towns.
• Jason Greenspan spoke about how Rutgers is going to come in and do another study on how Belford fishing facility can be used.
• A resolution will be presented at the next meeting to appoint a Deferred Compensation Benefits Plan Administrator.
• Tony Mercantante said that drainage projects are included in the capital budget, but there are small jobs that need to be done and can be done outside the capital budget and can be engineered by Ted Maloney.
• A resolution will be voted on at the next meeting to appoint members of the Economic Development Committee

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospitalized With Cancer

 

The New York Times is reporting that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York on Thursday for what was apparently early-stage pancreatic cancer, according to a statement released by the Supreme Court.

The surgery followed the discovery of a lesion during an annual check-up in late January at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. A CAT scan revealed a small tumor, approximately one centimeter across, in the center of the pancreas, the court’s statement said.

According to Dr. Murray Brennan, the attending surgeon, Justice Ginsburg will most likely remain in the hospital approximately for seven to 10 days, the statement added. A spokeswoman for Sloan-Kettering declined to elaborate.

President Obama was informed of the justice’s condition early Thursday afternoon, his spokesman said.

“He has not talked with the justice, but his thoughts and prayers are with her and her family right now,” said Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman. “We hope for and wish her a speedy recovery.”
