I haven't had time yet to review the video from the May 4th Middletown Township workshop meeting, I intent to watch it in full over the next day. However, what I have seen of the video is shameful.
During the public hearing for the ordinance on naming new streets in town after former mayors, Linda Baum questioned whether it was a good idea to name streets after former mayors who were not directly elected by residents. Her concerns were dismissed in a rather rude and unprofessional manner by both former mayor Tony Fiore and current mayor Stephanie Murray. They both attacked her, calling her objection to the ordinance political before voting to approve the ordinance.
Here is a short description of what else took place.
- The Administrator discussed the capital budget for 2015.
- Ordinances were adopted to provide new street names consisting of past mayors.
- Approving new stop intersections by Ideal Beach and
- Reorganize the structure of the police department.
As always, you can download a copy of the Meeting Agenda that contains the discussion items and the proposed resolutions and ordinances that were voted on or presented during the meeting. A box around an item is a link, bringing you further into the document to that resolution or ordinance. At the end of the resolution there will be a link bringing you back to the agenda. Attached to this agenda is also the monthly bill list, so that everyone can see how the Township is spending our tax dollars.

Steve Massell is one inch away from indictment
There is a rumor Stephen Massell and Gerald Massell are under a criminal investigation
Oh really?
I'll believe it when I see it.
Is this the most important issue facing Middletown today....naming streets for former mayors? Who seems to think they qualify?? Scharfey ?? He never served anyone but himself !!
It should never happen until they are dead and unless they have contributed some act of valor or special service to those they were elected to serve. The republicans in this town serve themselves and this is a classic example of the ego mania and lack of character and integrity of many who have been elected in this town !!
God save us from the dunces.....
How about shitbird alley?
I did not express myself well or complete my thoughts at the meeting, so let me recap here. Regarding use of former mayors’ names for local street names after the individual’s service on the township committee has ended, my concerns are as follows:
I mainly take issue with the fact that names are approved for use during the lifetime of individuals who may hold future public office. There is value in name recognition, and so there may be personal and political benefit here utilizing public resources. And since this is a benefit the township committee has bestowed on some of its current members, who voted for adoption, it also seems to be a misuse of public office.
Further this appears to be a violation of the township’s own policy allowing name dedication only after the death of the honoree. I don’t think it matters if we are talking about a room or a road. The policy should be consistent with regard to all township property.
Committeeman Fiore said this has been done before. I don’t know if that’s true or how many examples there are, if any, but that is not reason to do something again if there is good reason not to.
I certainly don’t see anything wrong with recognizing public officials for their service, just feel there are many other ways to do that that don’t raise these same concerns.
I certainly would never want to live on such a street!! I'm so regretful that I was not there to support Linda Baum during the TC's usual rudeness and lack of respect.
One thing to name streets after veterans from Middletown who have served their country, and quite another to name streets after political hacks who have served themselves.
And if certain mayors are fantasizing about being remembered on Middletown's street signage they can keep dreaming...we already have a Gayboy Court and we can just reverse the word order on Tramp Hollow Road.
They left one of our most famous mayors off of the list, for some reason. Convicted Operation Bid Rig Mayor Ray O'Grady is not on the list. Even Pat Parkinson, who was charged with sexual harassment of the Township Clerk made the list. Go figure.
Seeing as how this TC is always striving for efficiencies and economies of scale, why not take care of it all by just naming one intersection after all of them- conveniently located at the corner of Self-Serving Way and Political Hack Drive.
Red Bank has a former mayor, now deceased individual who deserves such recognition. That man is Daniel O"Hern
He served with distinction not only as mayor of Red Bank but also the citizens of New Jersey as a judge.
Unfortunately in the many, many years I have lived in this area can I recall any former mayor of Middletown who comes even remotely close to the stature of the late Dan O'Hern.
This is an honor to be bestowed on very special individuals !
No one who has served as a mayor in Middletown in at least the last eighty years meets the criteria for that honor. Not one of them !!
This TC bunch of arrogant and ignorant clucks don't know any better !!
I've lived here for 60 years and am not aware of any streets being named after a mayor. The naming of streets to honor military personnel killed in action was started long before the members of this tc lived here. I believe some streets may have been named after former fire chiefs. How many more streets in this town does the tc plan on building? Maybe just enough to further feed their egos.
Most of what takes place in Middletown was started long before the members of this township committee lived here.
Some of this TC wasn't even born then !!
What makes this bunch think they are anything special because they are not !! And there has not been anyone serving in the last half century that deserves any commemoration !!!
NOT ONE !!!
