Pallone Applauds President Obama’s Keystone Veto

WASHINGTON, DC — House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) released the following statement after President Obama vetoed the Keystone XL pipeline legislation:

“I applaud the President for rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline legislation. The American public understands that the environmental risks of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline—for our drinking water, land, and climate—far outweigh any perceived benefit of its construction. Congress has wasted enough time on this Canadian pipedream. We need to be working on legislation to support a clean energy economy, improve domestic energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and combat the impacts of climate change. Keystone XL is a lose-lose proposition for energy security, a safe climate, and a healthy environment, and I commend the Administration for rejecting the dirty and dangerous pipeline.”

The tar sand oil was never destined to be used in the US. Canada needed somewhere to load onto ships for other countries.
