Letter: Should There Be A North American Union Passports

The expressed opinions or views of this letter does not necessarily represent the opinion of the MiddletownMike blog:

Dear Editor,

CNN recently published a political op-ed advocating for a North American union passport, with aims to allow unrestricted immigration between Mexico, the United States and Canada. Additionally the piece speaks favorably on NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), which has been a disaster for all parties.

At this time in history, a North American passport would create an unfair economic and social welfare burden to the US and Canada by causing a mass influx of further unrestricted immigration from Mexico, at a time when illegal immigration and economic woes have yet to be addressed.

However, allowing Americans and Canadians to move freely between both countries would be a good idea that would be of mutual benefit. It would be viable because the US and Canada both have similar cultural and legal roots, plus share a relatively comparable standard of living.

If such a program proved successful, the next step would be to consider adding additional compatible partner nations such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the English-speaking Caribbean to our borderless community.

Just because you don't want to allow your neighbor to enter your home uninvited, doesn't mean you can't be good neighbors.
