One of the worst things about student loans: Although they enable more people to get funding for college, they also allow the colleges to raise their tuition fast, some cases 3 times faster than the rate of inflation. Back in the day, the average joe could put himself through college with no loans working a low paying part time job. Even community college students would struggle to do that now, working FULL TIME. Higher Education is important to keep America competitive. End government subsidy of student loans (or, have the government pay all student debts and have the schools become more accountable for their tuition). The crisis needs to end. A student shouldn't be deterred from going to college because of a possible horrible financial situation.
