Women of N.J. deserve better from Gov. Chris Christie

With Women’s History Month wrapping up a few days ago, I just wanted to share an  op-ed on Governor Christie’s history with women that ran this weekend in The Trenton Times.

By Joshua Henne

Every parent wants his or her daughter to find success and be surrounded by people who treat women with care and respect. New Jersey’s women deserve nothing less from their governor.
March is Women’s History Month. Unfortunately, it’s worth noting that Gov. Chris Christie’s own public history with women — through both word and deed — is pockmarked with marginalization, mockery and even malice.

It’s been this way right from the start. In 2010, with the stroke of a pen, Gov. Christie eliminated a $7.4 million budget line that provided basic reproductive health services. This money helped support critical care and cancer screenings for more than 135,000 patients. It covered clinical breast exams and Pap tests. When cutting this line item, Christie said it was necessary for “fiscal discipline.” Yet, research shows family planning saves taxpayers approximately $3.75 for every $1 that’s invested. So, when Christie eliminated the funding, it myopically meant New Jersey taxpayers could essentially be on the hook for an additional $28 million in Medicaid spending.

Always a trendsetter, Christie was ahead of the curve by putting reproductive rights on the chopping block. Last summer, when the Legislature approved a budget that included restoring women’s health funding, he again slashed $7.5 million in family planning services. Christie even had the temerity to say his budgets provide full funding for women’s health. Apparently, the governor’s dictionary fails to include Planned Parenthood or other reproductive health-care providers in its definition of women’s health.

But, it’s not just about whether Christie believes in a woman’s “right to choose.” It seems he doesn’t believe in a woman’s right to ... well ... anything. Last year, Christie cut $486,000 in grants to Hispanic Women’s Resource Centers and another $450,000 from a postpartum education campaign. He also slashed funding for the Paid Family Leave insurance program, saying it was overfunded. The state has still failed to spend the money mandated by the Legislature to advertise the program and provide outreach. All the while, Christie refuses to even contemplate a millionaire’s tax and has given tax breaks to mall and casino developers even as he claims the state coffers are bare. It’s clear where his priorities lie.

Ever since taking office, through both policy and his words, the governor has consistently unleashed a wholesale assault on the women of New Jersey. Some of the things he’s said and done along these lines would make even Rush Limbaugh blush.

The entire nation recoiled when Christie recommended that reporters “take the bat out on” state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) — a 77-year-old grandmother. While that was the most incendiary remark he’s directed toward a female legislator, it certainly wasn’t the first — or the last. Christie also called Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle (D-Englewood) “a jerk” for daring to criticize him for using the State Police helicopter for personal reasons (to watch his son play baseball and to meet with fund raisers from Iowa). On more than one occasion, Christie called Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-East Orange) a liar despite clear evidence that backed up her side of the story. And Christie accused Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Trenton) of being responsible for two murders allegedly perpetrated by two people who had been released from prison under an early release bill she had sponsored.

Sadly, it’s not only public officials who feel the sting of Christie’s tart tongue. During a live call-in show, when asked if it’s fair to cut so much money from public education while sending his own children to private schools, Christie snapped, “Hey, Gail, you know what? It’s none of your business.” At a town hall meeting, when a teacher pointed out that New Jersey has some of the best schools in the country yet the Christie administration lambastes educators and only talks about how horrible schools are, the governor berated and belittled her. Christie remarked that she only wanted to “put on a show and giggle every time I talk,” and then dismissively stated, “I have no interest in answering your question.”

Running the gamut from eye-rolling derision to outright hostility, Gov. Christie seems to reserve a pointed level of wrath for his female critics. His default defense for bad behavior is that his rough-and-tumble way is simply the “Jersey way” to do things — perpetuating every obnoxious stereotype that plagues the Garden State. But that’s not how anyone should be treating women in any state, anywhere.

By all reports, Chris Christie is a devoted, loving and respectful husband, son and father. If only he would treat all of New Jersey’s women as if they were members of his own family.

There is nothing wrong with thinking of the taxpayers for once. We know Corslime never gave a crap about the average guy. I give christie a point for saying what he is going to do , and then actually doing it. That wimp Rush Holt can only provide me with some BS letter written by his assistant that has little to do with why I am wroin and he is right.

Anon 10:42 PM,

By-the-way, what does your comment have to do with how Christie treats and speaks about women?

No, Christie says he is going to do something, then he does something different and says he did what he said he would do. The public is and has caught on to his false claims of accomplishment --like stabilising and reducing taxes at the state level only to have the public financial burden show up at the local property tax level.

Was this written by a man? Joshua

You obviously don't know women. Christie has an approval number over 57% with women voters in NJ.

He's the best Governor ever and he respects women. Sorry, but everyone can't have a handout. As taxpayers, we do not want to pay for your handouts, when we have to pay for our own. Nothing is free, it falls on the taxpayers laps. You think NJ can just print money like Obama does and expect taxpayers and our children to pay for all these handouts to the tune of trillions. Typical Democrats always expecting a handout on the taxpayers dime. Hey, the gravey train came to halt, I know many Democrats are trying to get it rolling again. Not going to happen though, too bad the Taxpayers are awake and Christie is bringing light to it and ending the abuse.
So to Joshua, go get another job. The taxpayers are not funding your benefits.
And the Women love our Governor.

Go ask Loretta Whinnyberg for some of her pension money, the double dipper that she is, on your tax dollar. Go ask the teacher's union to fund the benefits and have teachers pay more into their benefits so the taxpayers don't have to.

The only women who do not like the Governor are those who will not get a handout.

The only women who like the governor are those who are tossed a patronage job.

Funny you forgot old Republican Sam Thompson in your double dipping slam.

And Republicans like those who post here really hate handouts- unless they are being handed out to those whose incomes are in that rarified 1%.

No the gravy train did not come to a halt - it was just diverted from those who need to those who don't. You can thank Christie, as one of GW Bush's biggest fundraisers, for that. But as long as the " need-nots" get to feed from the trough, life is good...for them.

"The only women who like the governor are those who are tossed a patronage job."

I am sure Conzine and McGreevy NEVER did that, right??? LMAO

Ever heard the saying, what goes around comes around? Well its coming around...

Yeah we've seen it "coming around" here in town..."Christie's revenge" is up to her usual antics.

Anon 12:12,

Are you speaking of the shady character of the "majestic" capers???? Now the "illustrious" tax board appointee ?
If BS were money that broad would be rich.

As for the governor....just another BS artist, and they come in all sizes and shapes regardless of political affiliation. CC speaks with a forked tongue. Would not trust him as far as I could throw him....at his size, that ain't far !!!!
Can't trust a republican today for anything. About time they tended to their own business and kept their inept noses out of our bedrooms and our lives. Bunch of asinine lunatics who have the misconception that they know it all.
They don't !

What do you have to say about the $95,000 a year patronage employment handout to Middletown Committeeman Dr. Gerry Scharfenberger for his very vocal support of Gov. Christie?

Anonymous said...

Scharfey will be out on the balls of his backside when CC fails re-election!!

Better hope this 51% don't vote...

March 13th, 2012
"The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind Poll out Tuesday shows 51 percent of voters surveyed think New Jersey is headed in the right direction."

That 51% does not conclude that the women and the teachers were interviewed. The republicans "war on the women" in this state and this country will clearly be a voting block to be recognized with and the republicans finish LAST in the minds of intelligent, self respecting females in this land.

Those asinine ,mostly white, self serving males don't even know the difference between right or wrong.
The only thing they worry about is themselves and their own wallets or agenda. To hell with the rest of the population.

The Middletown committeeman is a classic example of such a self serving character. CC is a loud mouth, respect for no one, character also.

N.J. can do better....much better.

Are you bitter because a Republican replaced a democrat? As Pallone how much his wife makes in her patronage job way more than most make

Anonymous said...

What the hell does Pallone's wife's salary have to do with the way CC or your pal,Gerry, conduct themselves?? Don't you respect yourself if you are a female and take issue with the conduct of these self serving, ignorant men ????? Don't you take issue with the fact they do not show others respect but expect to be respected ?? What is wrong with you ??

Political party affiliation aside, they leave plenty to be desired and they show no respect to anyone who disagrees with what they say or what they do. Their conduct should be above reproach if they serve to REPRESENT !!! The only ones they serve are themselves.

Not bitter, disgusted and unaffiliated and know the difference between good public servants and lousy ones,e.g CC & GS.

.Today's Press, N.J. & Region in Review, first Brief.."Poll: Christie arrogant, strong leader "

This says about what Anonymous 4/6 @ 8:14 conveyed in that writer's opinion.

By the time this governor stands for re-election, he will not win unless he changes his self serving conduct and dismissive behavior toward anyone who does not share his agenda or views.Negative opinions are rising steadily.

The same goes for any of his lackeys. They will all be replaced as well.
