Will discuss failure of the House Republican’s Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization to protect all women from domestic violence

W. KEANSBURG, NJ– On Wednesday, May 23 at 11:30 a.m. Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) will visit an art therapy program for battered women run by 180, Turning Lives Around to call for a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization that protects all women from domestic violence.

Since 1994 VAWA has been an essential tool in protecting victims of domestic violence, but the partisan VAWA reauthorization bill recently passed by House Republicans fails to include critical protections for LGBT, Immigrant and Native American women.  The Senate passed an inclusive, bipartisan VAWA Reauthorization that was not brought to the floor by House GOP leadership.

180 Turning Lives Around is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence in Monmouth County. Congressman Pallone will be joined at the event by advocates for victims of domestic violence and elected officials.

Congressman Pallone to Discuss Lowering Gas Prices and Reducing American Dependence on Foreign Oil at EOS Energy Storage in Edison, NJ

Edison, NJ -- Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) will visit the EOS Energy Storage facility on Monday, February 27, 2012, to discuss his support for an “all-of-the-above” approach to American energy production and protecting consumers from rising gas prices at the pump.

Gas prices have reached an average of $3.52 a gallon in New Jersey as a result, in part, of speculative trading on Wall Street. Congressman Pallone will call for further investments in domestic energy sources and new energy technologies to reduce dependence on foreign oil and lower gas prices.

 Congressman Pallone will also highlight the importance of innovative companies like EOS Energy Storage in reducing demand for foreign oil and creating American jobs. EOS develops lost-cost batteries for electric vehicles.  Cars with EOS batteries have the same costs and range as gasoline vehicles with 1/10th the fuel cost. 

Congressman Frank Pallone Introduces Bill Bringing Sports Betting to New Jersey

Trenton, N.J. – On Monday January 23, 2012, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr.(NJ-06) will stand with NJ State Senators Raymond Lesniak (NJ-20) and Jim Whelan (NJ-02) at the New Jersey State House to announce legislation he is introducing that will open sports betting to New Jersey. The bill will exclude New Jersey from the federal prohibition on professional and amateur sports gambling.

In November, 2011 New Jersey voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure amending the state constitution to authorize the Legislature to enact laws allowing sports wagering in New Jersey. On Wednesday, Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill allowing people over the age of 21 to place a bet on a sporting event in-person at special lounges created in casinos, racetracks or at the site of a former racetrack

"The existing federal law is unconstitutional and arbitrary, giving four states access to this billion-dollar industry, while shutting out the rest," said Pallone. "The citizens of New Jersey have made it clear they want the opportunity to share in the profits from professional sports betting. This legislation will help even the playing field and uphold our state's wishes on what is clearly a state issue."

Senator Lesniak said, "We appreciate Congressman Pallone's effort to get Congress to give New Jersey what our residents overwhelmingly want, the same ability to place bets on sporting events that it has given to the residents of Nevada and to boost revenues and jobs at our casinos and racetracks."

Pallone Renews Commitment to College Affordability, Protecting Pell Grant Loan Funding

Long Branch, N.J. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. Monday will speak with Rutgers students during a roundtable discussion regarding their concerns about federal support for improving college affordability and the ongoing threat the Republican majority poses to funding federal Pell Grant loans. New Jersey students are concerned about college debt and the availability of federal Pell Grants, which for many, are the only way they are able to attend college.

During the recent debate to raise the debt ceiling in July, Republicans offered Pell Grant cuts as a way to cut the budget. These cuts were averted but as the Super Committee convenes to discuss budget cuts, Pell Grant funding may again be on the table.
