Several days ago NJ.com posted an articular/slideshow about the fast shrinking towns in the state. Interestingly, according to NJ.com, Middletown is listed as the 6th fastest shrinking town in NJ, having lost 505 resident (or 1% of population) between 2010 -2014. Some of this decline can be attributed to the after effects of Super Storm Sandy. However, the decline seems to have been taking place before Sandy struck, as a result of the great recession.
What does this say about Middletown? To be honest, I'm not really sure. It could be the result of simple economic principals - Middletown just isn't as affordable as some would like us to think.
