Pallone Statement on Pope Francis’ Address to Congress

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 24, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) made the following statement on Pope Francis’ address to the joint meeting of Congress.

“It was a great honor to hear Pope Francis address Congress in the Capitol and to be in the presence of his historic visit. Never before had a Pope addressed a joint meeting of Congress, and rarely before has the House of Representatives more desperately been in need of such a unifying voice.

“From his call for courageous action to combat poverty and protect the environment on moral terms to his steadfast commitment to acceptance of immigrants, there are many reasons to admire Pope Francis and heed his message. It is my hope and belief that his message of equality, tolerance, human dignity, world peace and rejecting a mindset of hostility resonated and served as an inspiration not just to us in Congress, but to the entire country.

“My office had the privilege to provide tickets to my constituents to hear the Pope’s speech from the West Lawn of the Capitol. I am especially glad that residents from towns from across the 6th Congressional District – including Edison, Hazlet, Long Branch, Middletown, Oceanport, Piscataway, South Plainfield, West Long Branch, and Woodbridge – were able to travel to D.C. for this historic opportunity.
