Letter: Police Brutality At Brookdale Community College

The expressed opinions or views of this letter does not necessarily represent the opinion of the MiddletownMike blog:

Dear Editor,

I was shocked to learn of the police brutality by the Brookdale Community College Police Department against student Jeffrey "Jay" Michel of Colts Neck.

Michel is an innocent student who was physically assaulted by police, who pepper sprayed him and put him into a choke hold for no reason.

Like far too many other incidents of police brutality in this country, Mr. Michel is African-American.

This is not the first incident that Brookdale Police have been involved in that has sparked allegations of racism. In 2012, another minority student Cedric Calero, an 18 year old freshman from Manalapan was arrested by campus police on theft charges, that were later dropped, for filling a foam cup with ice and not paying the price of a soda, despite the fact he never filled the cup with soda.

I call upon Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson to march on Brookdale Community College, to demand that the baseless charges against Mr. Michel be dropped and the officers responsible for this abuse of power be terminated from their employment and criminally prosecuted for their misconduct and assault against Mr. Michel. We cannot allow this to continue.

Call College President Maureen Murphy at 732-224-2204 and tell her to Stop Police Brutality on Campus.

You want to call Sharpton here to Middletown? Al sharpton of Tawana Brawley, Freddie's fashion mart and tax cheating fame? The law in NJ generally doesn't require an individual to show id unless of course they are driving. I am not sure if this is true in the area this incident happened in. It seems to me the would have been no incident if the student just showed his student id to the campus police. He would not have been spayed if he put his arms behind his back as the police requested. This video showed the restraint of the Brookdale police. There was just a rush of robberies around Rutgers, the police were justified. Another odd thing about liberals is how they always see police as violent and not trust worthy yet feel only the police should be able to have guns.

What does robberies around Rutgers have to do with Brookdale College in Lincroft ??

Sometimes they should do psychological testing before they arm nuts with a gun and issue them a uniform.

Has Lincroft become another Ferguson, Missouri rush to judgement in less than 90 seconds.

Five or six against one sounds pathetic also !!

Liberals ,anon 4:53 ...you must be kidding !!

The Brookdale police have a duty to protect students if the person who was asked to show ID had shown his school ID the would have been no incident. All police are required to under go psychological exams. The police showed restraint in this video. The first 3 officers there I am sure could have taken him down they seemed reluctant to use their pepper spray. The robberies around Rutgers show that there are individuals who may target college students. It is also interesting someone just happened to be there to film it. And it is not wise to be behind the police's back when they are dealing with an unruly person.
The author of the letter wants to make it a Ferguson because of wanting Sharpton's presence here in Middletown.
You do see the police as violent look at your comment about 6 against 1. Do you view the police as trustworthy?

Even the APP reported the number of cops as five or six !!1 Some of the characters that wear uniforms today are not psychologically fit for that work !!!

Everybody carries a cell phone today that can film this kind of incident.

Get over yourself,anon 11:18

BTW, AL SHARPTON is today a commmentator on MSNBC and highly respected. He certainly is a champion of the oppressed and maybe he should come to Lincroft if those cops don't get their sh#t together !!

If the cops had given an answer to Michel when he asked why he was being accosted, none of this would have happened.

Let the courts sort it out !!!

Stop shooting your mouth off about something you know little or nothing about.....you were not there !!

If the individual would have cooperated with the police the incident would not have happened...like you said let the courts sort it out.....stop shooting YOUR mouth off about something YOU know nothing about....YOU were not there!...and did I hear someone say Al Sharpton is highly respected....oh please!!!!

Now that the MC prosecutors office as swept this under the table. I think Rev. Sharpton would be a very welcome source of help. Why was this man arrested? The charges all seem to stem from the arrest and not from why he was arrested. We need to bring the fight against police brutality here to Brookdale. Rev. Sharpton please come here!
