This year there was a change in the assessment process throughout Monmouth County. Tax assessment cards for the 2014 tax year were mailed out in mid November, a few months sooner than in the past. The deadline to file an appeal is also a few months earlier, now January 15th of each year. For additional information, contact the Middletown Tax Assessor’s office at 732-615-2089.

This really feels like a ploy to limit appeals simply by making it inconvenient. It is the busiest time of the year for so many people, and so many travel, too. Boo to whoever made this decision.

No doubt our trusty commenter from the opposing side will be here to explain why moving the deadline to January 15 is actually for the benefit of "legions" of taxpayers!
I think the reason for the change is so that the township will have a better handle on the overall assessment base earlier in the year in order to more accurately set the tax rate. If appeals are filed sooner, more will settle sooner. Tax appeals that settle late in the year could result in monies being refunded that are not anticipated when the budget is set.
