Election Results: Middletown Township Committee

It's a demographic that hasn't changed in years and says nothing about the worthiness of the candidates.

Mike, so sorry to hear about your parents. I hope whoever was ailing is now on the mend.

Also so sorry to see the election results. I was really hoping maybe we could have a change.

Actually it says a lot, although I can understand why you might try to make it seem otherwise.

The incumbents won in almost every election district in Middletown, and the Mayor, I believe, did just that.

I think it means that the Democrats need to change tactics, to move away from the arrogance of saying that the people of the town don't REALLY support the members of the township committee, because it's obvious that they do.

It's time for y'all to stop with the cries of "there's obvious corruption," and "we need a forensic audit," because, frankly no one is buying that and you are no where near even being competitive.

The Township is being run competently, tax rates are stable, and services are actually increasing in places like recreation. For you guys to pretend otherwise makes you look foolish, and that shows in the results on election night.

Become more of a civic organization, get to know the people of the town. Work WITH township employees instead of insulting them all the time and work to solve people's problems. There are issues out there that can differentiate you from the GOP, but the shrill, made up stuff hasn't worked and won't work - people aren't stupid.

I have told you guys this before but you have ignored me. Let's see what happens next...

Despite calling themselves "The Christie Team" the locals hold the same numbers they always do. The Cult of Christie is just that- New Jerseyans love Christie, they just hate everything he stands for. The increase in the minimum wage passed overwhelmingly- an increase which the Dems successfully got put on the ballot when Christie vetoed it. New Jersey loves Ralph Kramden, but the bus stops at Asbury Park.

You are correct.

As of 2011, there were a total of 46,628 registered voters in Middletown, of which 10,222 (21.9%) were registered as Democrats, 11,674 (25.0%) were registered as Republicans and 24,701 (53.0%) were registered as Independent. And I would say that the Independent voters breakdown along party line pretty much the same way as the spilt between Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats will always have an uphill battle on there hands in MIddletown regardless of who their candidates are. When the election falls durning a presidential or gubernatorial year that hill becomes steeper.

The simple fact of the matter is, Republicans in Middletown could run Charles Manson or John Wayne Gacy for Township Committee and still win an election due to the voter demographics in this town. It doesn't mean that they have better candidates or have better ideas and policies, it means that nearly 53% of all voters in this town lean Republican and vote Republican year after year despite what actually happens down at Town Hall.

Amen comment @8:58a.m. was sent when the only comment posted was the one at 12:08a.m. and was not intended to reinforce the 7:52a.m.comment.

Believe that commenter at 7:52a.m is a know it all most of us have no use for whose smug attitude turns off everyone and no one wants to hear her spout off her opinions about anything and everything.

Agree totally with Mike about the demographics in this town and believe it's voter apathy and the big money in the republican party that continually returns republicans to office. Some of these characters leave a great deal to be desired, make no mistake about that!!!! They willingly march to the chairman's drumbeat and that's why they are chosen !

Anyone who ignores what has happened in our schools and the rape of our library has their head in the sand! and needs a kick in the rear.

The school board election will help fix some of that. Aveta is going to be gone( maybe we can now buy some of what our kids need ) and next year we can get rid of a couple of more self serving political animals who could care less about our kids!!!

The future can belong to those willing to strive for bipartisan government in this community.

The problem is that the residents of this town are either very ignorant of their elected officials, or not very bright, and they are swayed by propaganda that they watch on the right wing media outlets.

Also, there are too many Catholics in this town and they almost always vote Republican, no matter what. I don't know why. It's not like Fiore or Scharfey are going to over turn Roe v. Wade, or something. They listen to their priests and Rome.

Also, the Asbury Park Press is a rotten rag of a newspaper that doesn't cover issues fairly, do investigative reporting, etc., and there are no other outlets that do.

Plus, people are also too busy to pay attention--either commuting to their jobs, or taking Muffy to Tae Kwon do, or whatever. So you have the same crooks and thieves voted in year after year.

Frankly, I'm going to get the hell out of this town, and this State because I can't stand living amongst the ignorant and the stupid, and people who don't have enough sense to vote for their own basic interests.

They've drunk kool-aid, or the tea, or what have you...and were poisoned.

...tax rates are stable???? Get a clue. The MUNICIPAL tax levy has gone up every year, nearly 53% since 2005. That's a fact and the reason it sounds so foreign is because the township committee members never talk in terms of their OWN record. They will always talk in terms of the overall that includes the school and county pieces of the tax bill, which is deliberately misleading.

Anon 7:52 AM -

That was a fantastic post and I agree with every word. Kudos to you for writing it. I especially like your suggestion to work WITH township employees because AS a township employee I feel we need all the support we can get from an apparently disgruntled public. We work hard for you people and don't always feel appreciated.

Check out the tax rates. Middletown isn't the highest, it isn't the lowest. It appears to be right in the middle of Monmouth County, so what's your complaint?

Just like I said, making stuff up didn't work and it won't. But keep running with that if you want to continue losing...

I love it when posters give kudos to themselves! A nice way to unwind both before and after a workday.

Are you implying that the 7:52 AM and the 5:28 PM posts were both written by the same person? Because they were not: I'm 5:28 PM and I was so impressed with the 7:52 AM post that I had to comment on it. But go ahead, believe what you want to believe - you township-hater types are convinced everyone's posting under multiple names anyway.

Anonymous said...

Fully aware the " know it all poster" carries on conversations with herself and writes and rewrites kudos to herself under various names and has for many years now, Want some pseudo names
from her rantings on the APP until they required a name, e.g "cons 1234,
"dig 1129,"stop the socialists",and shall I go on like "jet fan 89" "village greener",etc.,etc",etc..

Don't understand why that person continues to try and convince us of her opinions when we are all entitled to our own which often times come from experiences with the clucks running this town and their bullying!!

Motormouth,it does not take rocket science to see the agenda of this TC
and it hasn't for a very long time!!
They, just like you, only want to hear themselves TALK !

Amen !!!!... remember Sharfey and Fiore may have religion but they have no consciences and doubtful that the rest of them do either.

It's all about politics...politics,power and money!

Anonymous said...

Mike, you should actually run your numbers and divide the independents in half and you will see that the Democrats "underperformed" this election by over 20% of what their "expected" vote would be.

And what about the fact that the Mayor won in EVERY ELECTION DISTRICT? That's even in the places where, presumably, Democrats have a voter registration edge. How does that square with your excuse making?

Not Fooled Independent said...

Ratchet mouth @ 7:43a.m.,

Nobody's making excuses. Just telling it like it is. The big money in Middletown supports the republicans (as it does nationwide...Koch& Koch etc.) and a good deal of voter apathy has perpetuated the republican majority in this town for years.

The individual currently serving as mayor has a penchant for saying anything he thinks serves his political purpose, not always what's true.

If the TC meetings were televised ,many current TC members would be history. It's a waste of precious time to attend a TC meeting and subject oneself to the bullying of these integrity compromised characters ...and an ignorant, uninformed voter is as bad as a non-voter. Money spreads the lies and many people vote party lines ignorantly! No wonder the republicans resist televising TC meetings. They DO NOT WANT the public to see what they really are !!!

Middletown needs a new form of government, a ward system and an elected mayor to better represent the over 70,000 residents living here and not just the "elite" politicians controlled by a republican despot.

MiddletownMike said...

Anon 7:43,

First of all wasn't making excuses, I was stating the obvious.

I don't have to run numbers because I know what I'm talking about. Historically if you look at all the elections that have fallen during presidential or gubernatorial election cycles over the past 30 years, Democrats in Middletown get hammered. It has nothing to do with underperforming. It's demographics.

Middletown voters lean Republican therefore you cannot just spilt the Independents in half and expect that because more votes were cast for Republicans that the Democrats under performed. Independents in this town lean Republican.

And Scharfenberger didn't win in every district as you say. He lost in District 4 to both Baum and Olsen and in a number of others he won with less than 5-10 votes, so his victory wasn't as awesome as you seem to want it to be. He road Christie's tails for sure.

You can look it up

Middletown's lowest turnout ever was in 2011 at 22%. Fiore and Murray swept through almost every district that year too and won by 20%. Hard to admit when you are wrong but you are.

Anonymous said...

Go back to bed Barbara. While you are at it, change your voter registration. You are not a Republican. stop living a lie.

Anonymous said...

Honestly Mike, it's all about money. If you factor in the massive amount of out of state money that Zuckerberg and friends heaped on Christie, it is shocking he didn't garner 99% of the vote. Add in the endless media circus surrounding Christie, and you get the kind of result we saw Tuesday.

In any case, If Christie decides he needs to run for the big one, he will get his clock cleaned in NJ by Hillary. Of course Christie may be able to turn that around if he reminds people that he won't be advised by Bill Clinton, but by the "Christie Team"-Gerry Scharfenberg and Company. Now there's a braintrust!

OK, enough is enough!

No more personal attacks against or foul words towards anonymous posters will be posted moving forward.

I just received two comments that I will not post due to the reason above.

Not everyone is going to agree with what's posted here and everyone has their own opinions as to what they believe, that's fine by me. I enjoy reading some of the convoluted BS that comes from those that disagree with what I write, even if their attempts at playing "gotcha" are annoying or mean spirited at times,I'm a big boy and can handle it.I want to hear from everyone, even those that disagree.

Please, moving forward keep your comments on topic and civil or they won't be posted.

Actually Mike, if you divide the independents by the same percentages as the vote as a whole, the Democrats still underperform by more than 20%.

That means one of two things: either the independents are more heavily Republican leaning than those who are registered with a party affiliation, or Democrats stayed home in droves.

Whose fault would that be?

But wouldn't the registered Democrats in Middletown - who supposedly distrust the TC, hate "what they are doing to Middletown," feel that there is "endless corruption and thuggery," be motivated to come out and vote for a "change?"

The fact is that if they wanted change - they would have.

That they didn't turn out in higher numbers indicates that they (and all Middletown voters) are, in fact, content with the way things are going.

It also shows that - for whatever reason - the local Democratic leadership was unable to motivate them. This low turnout was a perfect opportunity to win a seat on the TC.

No, it was a bad loss, no matter what excuses you make.

Anonymous said...

Don't flatter yourselves> These clucks hung onto Christie's coat tails and voter apathy has played a huge part too.

Gloating does nothing for the attitude of the people in this community....NOTHING !!!

Anonymous said...

There's been no "gloating" in anything I've posted. In fact, I've offered a frank assessment of the situation, and even offered suggestions on how to get yourselves in the game.

But the response has been whining, complaining and excuse making, but not an acceptance of what is really happening.

When voters are content with the status quo, they don't vote, period. Your contention has been that the voters in Middletown want to "throw the bums out."

That is obviously not the case and hasn't been for more than 30 years...

When candidates distort the truth or do not tell the truth in order to get elected and then people from that party continue to lecture the defeated side...THAT"S GLOATING!!!

Of course when we have republican party animals who need psychiatric help to understand the dynamics of human nature it's hopeless to think their opinions will ever change.

THERE ARE MANY INDEPENDENTS AND MOST DEMOCRATS IN THIS COMMUNITY WHO ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME OF THIS ELECTION !!

Have you ever heard the adage ' The lady doth protest too much " ?? That individual should share her views with her buddies over on MMM or at republican headquarters in town where she will find agreement, MAYBE !! Many of us are not interested in the "frank assessment" of the 7:38 a.m republican .

That comment sounds like a comment heard from ole' Sharfey at the Lincroft School on Candidate's night in Lincroft. Somehow he can't see that many DO NOT agree with him because he is a conceited individual ! "There are none so blind as those who refuse to see" !!

Middletown voters have repeatedly elected Sharfenberger, OBVIOUSLY they like what he is selling.

Time to go back to the drawing board Mike!

The attack campaign clearly is not working, but keep it up, for republicans sake!

Let's see, the "top" Democratic candidate gets 38% of the vote, but still some insist that the voters REALLY don't want to elect the Republican candidate...

LOL!

Why does a certain republican who repeatedly posts here not understand
that bullying us will not change any minds.Look what bullying got that football player who lacks common decency and has a rotten tongue in the NFL.

Why don't you just give it up for a change because no matter what, nobody likes your buddy,Sharfey, any better because of your rationalizations. Something is definitely wrong when you refuse to let it go ..... deck short a card or two?? To continue your tirades is sick !!

Only 19,026 voters of 47,918 registered voters in Middletown cast ballots. That's only 40 percent of those eligible to vote and certainly indicates voter apathy and that special election on Oct.16th didn't help.

Now stop the BS, it's another year till this crap matters if it ever does and all it accomplishes is hatred and divisiveness....satisfied now ???

Anonymous said...

Yes, the low voter turnout indicates that the voters are con tent with things JUST AS THEY ARE.

That's the fact!

Shoot your mouth off on Art's blog, maybe he will listen to you talk to yourself !

Funny you mention Art. The only piece he has done of any worth was one he did a while back where he asked voters on the streets of Middletown who their local politicians were. He was hard pressed to find even one who could name a committee member, assembly person, freeholder, etc. That kids, is the story of how Republicans win in Middletown year after year. The End. Now go to bed.
