8/20/12 Middletown Township Committee Meeting

Due to a death in the family this past week its has been a little crazy, I haven't been able to review this video of the the August 20, 2012 meeting of the Middletown Township Committee as of yet but I intend to soon and may comment on later.

Some of what took place included:

  • Six new police officers were sworn in during this meeting.
  • All bids to dredge Shadow Lake were rejected
  • A$750K bond ordinance ws approved to purchase new radios for emergency responders
  • An ordinance increasing fees in the Township was approved.

As always, you can download a copy of the meeting agenda that contains the discussion items and the proposed resolutions and ordinances that were voted on or presented during the meeting. A box around an item is a link, bringing you further into the document to that resolution or ordinance. At the end of the resolution there will be a link bringing you back to the agenda. Attached to this agenda is also the monthly bill list, so that everyone can see how the Township is spending our tax dollars.

Ah, the fee approach to raising revenue and a way to get around the 2% cap. I also think that the $750 thousand bond is also a way to get around the 2% cap, only with interest.

Let me count the ways to stay under the 2% cap and acquire revenue by dipping into taxpayer pockets: taking surplus from the library -- to be replaced with a bond for capital and other improvements at a later date; taking money from The Middletown Sewerage Authority; and more bonding.

What is Middletown's accured overtime and vacation time liability as of 2012 and will we pay for this by raising fees? What is the present year to date cost of the Township's self-insured health care plan; any cost overuns projected here that can be rolled into the 2013 budget as the township committee has frequently done in the past?

The 2% cap is a joke. It has taken the township committee just a little longer than some other towns to take the 'raise the fees approach' to implement a fee-tax to dodge the 2% cap. Maybe the press can get Kyrillos' position on this approach to raising revenue while reducing taxes?
