If you don't give me what I want in the union contract, I am not gonna write college recomendations...

Who needs teachers like that???

This is ACTUALLY happening RIGHT now in Monmouth County. Who does that HURT other than the students? That is the lowest of the low. Talk about holding the students/parents/Board hostage. Good tactics for people who "care" about the students. They care so much they don't want you to go away to college! Its appalling how someone could stand up for people who do that to the "kids". Way to go Mike, you really let you true colors shine through.

I am all for giving teachers fair pay and benefits they deserve, but when they get a cadillac health plan and pay nothing for it, meanwhile the private sector is contributing ALOT more, the tide has to be turned. Teachers used to be low paid, but had job security. Now they are higher paid and still have job security, so what's gonna give, otherwise the bubble will burst!

Oh Please.....

I've been hearing that crap about teachers not writing college recommendation letter for students for the past 25 years! It's nonsense.

Look around the country, not all teachers are paid as well paid as some are here in NJ, many scrape by and are leaving the profession because they can't make ends meet.

Tell me how is more important in a child's life a doctor or the person who taught the doctor to be a Doctor?

I would agree there needs to be some reform but the War on Teachers doesn't make much sense to me.

Its not a war on teachers, its a war on the teachers unions. How can you stand up for these unions?

In Middletown not so long ago instead of taking a pay freeze, the union decided not to take a membership vote and let 80+ new teachers get layed off. How does that benefit the "kids"???

Seems like you casually avoid BOE issues or budgets?

Anon,

Whether you wish to admit it or not there is a war going against teacher all over the country and it is despicable.

If you look at the facts in Middletown, you are correct about the teachers refusing to take a membership vote but it wasn't just because they were against a pay freeze. They had a contract and rightfully they refused to reopen that contract.

As for 80 new teachers being laid off you are wrong. Many older, established teachers decided to retire instead before Governor Christie's education, pension and health care reforms went into affect. Middletown lost more than 80 teacher over the past few years through retirements and not one teacher was laid off because of the contract squabble.

I believe that the job of the Middletown BOE is to ensure that the children of this town get a quality education and that members of the BOE should be advocating for the "Kids" every step of the way. It is not the job of the BOE to advocate for the parents or taxpayers in MIddletown, when they do that the quality of education suffers, as it has for the past few years.

Do teachers have a job for life? No they don't. They can be fired if the BOE does its job properly and builds a case against a poor teacher. It's no different in the private sector, if you have a poorly performing employee, you need to build a case against them to justify firing the individual. It takes time but it can be done. I think it is just easier for some to scream and holler and expect results instead of working to build a case to justify the results.

As for casually avoiding BOE issues or it's budget, your wrong. If something blatant goes on I have commented on it ( just do a google search and you'll see) and the budget in Middletown is no different than the school budget in any other town just take a look, every towns school budget comprises ~ 62% of the local tax burden. It will always be the largest portion of our tax bill unless the State decides to change the school funding formula.

And if you don't list your house with a "licensed realtor" they won't include your "for sale by owner" home in the list of homes you will be shown. Yada yada.

If being a teacher was such a cushy deal, people like 6:08 would have become one. If you choose the bigger paycheck in private industry and your industry goes into the toilet, you made a bad career choice. Stop blaming the public sector- you could have joined this "elite"- why didn't ya?
