More Audio From Tuesday Night's Township Committee Meeting; Former Committeeman Tom Wilkens Comments On Swim Club Closing

In this audio clip from last Tuesday night's Middletown Township Committee meeting, hometown hero, former Olympian and Township Committee member, Tom Wilkens addressed the Township Committee about the sudden news that the Swim and Tennis Club would not be operational for this coming summer season, during the public comments portion of the Township Committee meeting that took place on January 19th.

He expressed his understanding of the issue as a former member of the Township Committee, former commissioner of the Swim Club Utility and current member of the Middletown Swim and Tennis Club and wondered if all possible options for keeping the swim club open had been considered.

Good riddance to the swim club it was a big money pit and was used by a selected few. It was run poorly and it was staffed poorly. If it was privately owned the staff would have been let go years ago.

How do we justify keeping open a Swim Club when we apparently don't even have the funds to salt/plow our sidestreets on weeks like this?

How is it OK that cars and people are expected to slip/slide their way to the county roads and school bus stops without ANY action from the township beyond waiting on the rising temperatures?

If our hefty property tax bills don't even guarantee us basic safety measures, why are we even talking about swim clubs?

Is Tom Wilkens saying that the Swim Club Commission was blindsided by the news, that no one told them before it hit the press?

He has good ideas; he's a good speaker. I voted for him. I was impressed by him when he came around my block some years ago, campaigning. He doesn't seem like he plays politics. He seems like a real guy who cares about community. The next one to run should be him. Or does he have a reason he left Mdltn. politics? I'd like to know. We've been missing guys like him representing us, working for our town.

Unfortunately guys like Tom do not last long in politics, especially in Middletown. Those who want to serve for the right reasons and do what is right for the taxpayers are cast aside by their own party. Tom is not the first decent man who fell prey to these vultures.
