As we approach Tuesday, Nov. 8, I am reminded daily of the serious issues facing Middletown.
Last year, Sean Byrnes and I ran on those very same issues. Unfortunately, the voters chose to vote for more of the same, primarily due to the national political climate.
Although unsuccessful, we did manage to get more than 2,000 voters to cross party lines and vote for us. They recognized that party affiliation should not be a factor when it comes to local politics. It’s all about who will manage our taxes more wisely and prudently. It’s all about our leaders representing the people they were elected to serve, not a political party.
Anyone opposing the Republican candidates faces an uphill battle. We have a political machine firmly entrenched in Middletown for more than 30 years, which has controlled everything.
There is no way the Republicans can blame another party for the problems we are facing. Yet due to their continued mismanagement, our debt has ballooned to more than $72 million. One-party government has failed in Middletown; it’s time we hold those in charge accountable.
Voters have another opportunity this November to choose candidates who represent honesty and integrity, candidates who will respect the needs of all the residents of Middletown and not the elite few.
Those candidates are Jim Grenafege and Carol Fowler.

Mike,
There is also an EXCELLENT letter in today's Asbury Park Press written by Mr. Paul J. Jansen, All-GOP domination hurts Middletown taxpayers. Well said sir.
Mary is right on target about the need for healthy representative government that serves the people is desperately needed in Middletown.
The repeated failure to recognize the needs of the people (not the republican party) and the conditions that exist in the current economy clearly indicates government has NOT and is not serving the residents in this town for many of the recent past years now.
Since for most people, all politics is local and affects them most. It is time to elect those who represent and understand that public service is utmost. Politics is just a game for those who are self serving individuals and merely politicians.
Based on last night's disgraceful performance by the GOP candidates and the plants in the audience last night, I couldn't agree more.
Grenagege and Fowler displayed grace and dignity and showed respect even when being attacked.
Murray and Fiore had their well rehearsed lines and it showed.
I don't think they did themselves any good.
Tomorrow's LVGA sponsored event will be much different.
No one in the audience will have an opportunity to take over and bully anyone.
The Middletown Republican Party has been taken over by a bunch of rotten to the core, surly THUGS !!
One past mayor who still enjoyed a bit of respect did nothing for himself last night to retain that respect, absolutely nothing! He has become just another lousy "republican" politician in the current game of slimy, absent of integrity politics in this town!
I think Fiore's association with Art Gallagher and his championing of his blog makes him uniquely unqualified to serve in public office. As a longtime resident of Middletown, I find it shocking that a duly elected mayor, elected to represent all the citizens of Middletown including Independents and Democrats recommends that site to his constituents.
At one point, Gallagher sought to find out the identity of the Jane Doe grandmother in the Ocean Grove graduation suit. He promised to publish her name if discovered. If she had been harassed or harmed, would our Mayor have been proud of himself for publicizing that blog? That he supports a man that sought to circumvent the legal protections afforded to a plaintiff in a controversial lawsuit? Are we that desperate for a warm body to fill a Committee seat that character and judgement are irrelevant?
Middletown should have been more careful three years ago when Fiore was elected the first time and he could not tell the truth about anything then
The vicious attacks on his opponents then were without conscience. This time do not re-elect this man,a carpetbagger who continues to have trouble with telling the truth.
Fiore was never qualified for office if integrity and ethical behavior is a qualification to hold office.
I went in open minded and objective when I attended the LVGA candidates' night last night
The moderator was very firm and did a great job and kept to the issues.
No personal questions were allowed, which I was disappointed about. I wanted to learn more about this Steph Murray. I still don't know anything about her and just heard her echo Fiore's arrogance. I was completely turned off by her question as to how can anyone can complain about Middletown? This is a great place to live. Yeah right, Steph as long as you're a Republican.
Carol Fowler showed us her personality which is soft spoken and reserved. She was open and sincere and certainly not a politician. I've had enough of them.
I was very impressed with Jim Grenafege. He was knowledgeable, articulate and respectful. He doesn't have an agenda, except to represent the people who don't have a voice.
Rich Morrill was very direct and as a former Republican insider knows what's really going on. Good to see someone speak the truth and not with forked tongue.
I have many reasons not to vote Republican.
I agree with this letter. One party rule has ruined this town.
Ms. Murray, how can anyone in Middletown complain? May I suggest you hit the pavement this weekend in the Bayshore areas of town for a reality check on some real quality of life issues/concerns.
That's the trouble with the whole gang of republicans.they are completely out of touch with how a great deal of the people in this town survive and THEY REALLY DON"T GIVE A DAMN!!
It's all about control and power!!
6:20, ditto. Ms. Murray obviously has not been to my area of town.
She sounds clueless or just in denial.
I'm surprised we haven't heard her say "let them eat cake".
Is this the best the Republicans have to offer? She's sat on a couple of boards she was appointed to? Her resume seems to change when questions are asked? Something is very fishy here.
