Shadow Lake Dam Breached: Portion Of Hubbard Rd Washed Away And Toxic Lake Sediment Spilling into the Navesink River

Big trouble for those living in the Shadow Lake / River Plaza area of Middletown, I've just been told be a friend who lives on West Front Street that the Shadow Lake Dam was breached as a result of Hurricane Irene.

I have been informed that the earthen berm is nearly gone and the water rushing from the lake has washed away a large section Hubbard Rd. and is spilling it's arsenic rich and heavy metal contaminated toxic sediment into the Navesink River turning the river a dark muddy brown color.

I guess there wont be much of a need to dredge Shadow Lake after all seeing how there wont be a much of a lake left if the breach of the dam isn't fixed and the lake waters contained soon.

Also a major concern for the area residents I have been told, is that the recently replaced section of Navesink River Road near Hubbard was also washed out and will need to be replaced again.

This will cause a huge problem once school begins next week, it will be extremely difficult if not near impossible for kids to get school with these roads needing to be closed for an extended period of time.

Nothing like "Mother Nature" on a rampage to show just who is really the BOSS and make the TC look like the fools they can so often be.

it's NOT that bad. Only a small portion of the road has been washed away. Maybe you should investigate these things yourself before posting! As for the brown waters...duh....Red Bank got it's name from the color of the banks...Swimming River is GUSHING into the Navesink, bringing all kinds of sediment with it too Have you seen the torential current flowing out of the Navesink...PRIOR to where the Shadow Lake spillway joins it??

If Middletown had DREDGED Shadow Lake several years ago (they make promises to get votes during election season) would this breach have happened????

GOOD QUESTION !!!!!

Whenever it rains, the lake water get churned up and it turns a muddy brown. After the rain, it settles back down to the bottom and the lake goes back to it's natural state. Your headline was the only TOXIC element I found!! The dam and berm are almost 100 years old and their collapse has nothing to do with dredging. The road will be fixed and the dam will be replaced and life will go on.

Maybe with a declaration of emergency in New Jersey the TC can get their act together and finally get financing in place for the project that has needed doing for several years if this is what neglect can cause. Perhaps they are waiting for the County to do it if any portion of Hubbard Avenue is a county road .

Currently and for the last too many years our governing body has been inept and each year it gets worse.

Look at the mess our school system has become because of political interference and political involvement to try and control the BOE by our politicians which is unethical.

Middletown is one disappointing scene in the scheme of things in today's world.

Sick politics is destroying this township. And it all goes on behind CLOSED DOORS !!!

Navesink River road is open and there is no damage. The claims are false and as for Shadow Lake the spillway is still there is was a portion of the bankment that washed away. What people need to do is read the "ROAD CLOSED" sign and stop turning around in my driveway.

Closed until further notice,anonymous 5:07p.m. 8/28.

NOT THAT BAD??????

School opens next week and confusion will reign. Just wait and see, anonymous 5;07, with your endless defense of the inept officials in this township.

BTW Swimming River Road is also closed indefinitely because of flooding like never seen before there. Mother Nature rules !!

I am the Golf Course Superintendent of Shadow Lake Village, and here is some useful information that Mike forgot to research. Arsenic is present in most lakes, but Shadow Lake had been tested 3 years ago prior to the dredging plan that was never implemented. Beside Arsenic, there were no highly toxic metals declared in the tests, and the test results proved that all metal traces to be lower than the EPA/DEP guidelines that measure the toxicity levels. Oh by the way, I have been driving down Navesink River Road all week :-)

Good post Bobby D.
Question: What is the level of arsenic contamination in your 3 year old sample. Facts are useful.

Thanks.
