Republican Candidate Avallone Challenges Scharfenberger To Debate Before June Primary

Tony Avallone, the Republican Candidate for Middeltown Township Committee, who is running in the upcoming June primary to unseat Middletown's acting mayor Gerry Scharfenberger for the party line on the November ballot, has issued a challenge to the mayor. Avallone wants to debate him at a "Meet the Candidates Night" that he has proposed take place in the Town Hall courtroom on May 24th.

I understand that Mr. Avallone has sent the following letter of challenge to several media outlets and to Mr. Scharfenberger himself, in the hopes that he would feel obliged to agree and debate the issues that are of the most importance to residents such as lack fiscal responsibility and the looming $5M township budget deficit:

May 13, 2010

Letter to the Editor

With approximately 3 weeks left, before the Republican Primary for the Middletown Town Council elections, my email and voice mail have been flooded with inquiries as to when there will be a “Meet the Candidates Night”.

Mayor Scharfenberger, I propose we meet Monday May 24, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the Court Room at the Municipal Center. You have been Intellectually Dishonest with us the residents of Middletown, and I think it is very IMPORTANT that the voters understand the differences that you and I have.

We are almost 5 months into the year, with a projected budget deficit of $5m and still no budget. Why! This is completely fiscally irresponsible. I look forward to meeting with you on the 24th to discuss this subject, and many others, as we prepare for Middletown’s political make over.

Tony Avallone
Republican Candidate for Middletown Town Council

Word of advice to Mr. Avallone, don't hold your breath.

It would be a cold day in hell before Gerry Scharfenberger agrees to stand in front of people and be questioned critically about anything that goes on in Middletown. Scharfenberger knows how to dish it, but he can't take it !

Well, I'll tell you, Mr. Avallone, you won't be getting my vote. Your tone is immature, unprofessional and unnecessarily antagonistic.

P.S. If you want to run for an office, it would help if you know the correct term for the office you're seeking: it's called the Township Committee, not the Town Council.

Smart move ... throwing accusations at someone while asking them to meet you for a debate.

Mr. Avallone's challenge to the Mayor for a Meet the Candidates nights is perfectly reasonable.
He has a tough fight against the Republican machine ahead of him and this is one opportunity for the public to see what he has to offer.
So far the complaints about him are petty and lack any substance.
I personally would like to see a debate before I cast my vote, since I have been unhappy with the current status quo. We finally have some choices.
So what about it Mr. Mayor? Are you going to give us what the public wants?

Thank you Mr. Avallone for having the courage for standing up for your convictions.
The Mayor has shown his lack of leadership, and the township is in a much more precarious state because of it. I'm tired of all the promises and prentense of caring so much for the people in our town. We want action not words!
Now I have a choice this June.

It looks like the pro Scharfy scavengers are out in full force and taking Tony Avallone's signs.
I quess they can't blame it on the Dems. this time.
Why are you so afraid of a little competition? Could it be Tony Avallone might have what it takes to make some common sense changes to this town?

Avallone, isn't he the sign maker?

Don't make believe that you actully support a republican. NEVER in the past have you supported a Republican. The Dems are making another poor atttempt to knock out Scharfenberger but it just is not going to work. All the Dems do is lie and i am just tired of it. Nobody knows where Avallone magiclly came from.

Firstly, I am not supporting anyone, I'm just showing that Scharfy has an opponent for the June primary so that those that are disenfranchised with the current establishment have another choice to chose from.

Second, give me an example of where a Middletown Dem has lied about anything!

Third, learn how to spell. Im sure that the Middletown school system taught you better.

Scarfey hasn't the courage to debate Tony Avallone.

The redundant hyperbole spouted by the mayor's supporters gets really old. This mayor lacks common sense and common decency often times and with a running mate that it has been said has only been a resident of Middletown for two years,I ask is this the best the republican chairman can do for Middletown ?
Selling out to the outsiders ??

Tony Avallone is an accomplished business man,a thoughtful and decent man and has been a resident of the Lincroft section of the township for twenty five years. He certainly understands this community more than this year's mayor's running mate.

If this mayor were sincere he would welcome the chance to debate Tony but instead HE HIDES from the challenge.
